A Scalable VoD Service Scheme Based on Overlay Multicast Approach (오버레이 멀티캐스트를 적용한 확장성 있는 VoD 서비스 모델)

  • To provide VoD Service on the Internet VoD server is required to have a large amount of system resource and network bandwidth. Therefore, overlay Multicast schemes are considered as suitable alternatives but they also have some drawbacks to support on-demand media services. In this paper, we propose an overlay multicast based on-demand media service scheme which could exploit server's system resource and its network bandwidth efficiently. Proposed scheme uses shared buffer of clients involving the relay of traffic and Patching while it gives no restrictions to this scheme compared with unicast. Our simulation results show that proposed scheme can support more user than unicast and improve the network performance at the same time.

  • The Gauranteed Frame Rate service category was proposed by the ATM Forum as an enhancement to the UBR service. This service aims to support minimum cell rate gaurantee for each virtual connection and allow any excess bandwidth in the network to be shared among the contending VCs in a fair manner. We propose a new buffer management algorithm for GFR service through FIFO queuing discipline. Proposed scheme can provide minimum bandwidth guarantee for GFR VCs as well as improve the fairness among the competing GFR VCs on a single FIFO queue. From simulation results, we demonstrate the proposed scheme fulfills the requirement of GFR service as well as improves the TCP throughput.

  • This paper proposes an imprecise compuitation model for DCT considering QOS of images and a two dimensional DCT architecture for imprecise computations. In case that many processes are scheduling in a hard real time system, the system resources are shared among them. Thus all processes can not be allocated enough system resources (such as processing power and communication bandwidth). The imprecise computtion model can be used to provide scheduling flexibility and various QOS(quality of service)levels, to enhance fault tolerance, and to ensure service continuity in rela time systems. The DCT(discrete cosine transform) is known as one of popular image data compression techniques and adopted in JPEG and MPEG algorithms since the DCT can remove the spatial redundancy of 2-D image data efficiently. Even though many commercial data compression VLSI chips include the DCST hardware, the DCT computation is still a very time-consuming process and a lot of hardware resources are required for the DCT implementation. In this paper the DCT procedure is re-analyzed to fit to imprecise computation model. The test image is simulated on teh base of this model, and the computation time and the quality of restored image are studied. The row-column algorithm is used ot fit the proposed imprecise computation DCT which supports pipeline operatiions by pixel unit, various QOS levels and low speed stroage devices. The architecture has reduced I/O bandwidth which could make its implementation feasible in VLSI. The architecture is proved using a VHDL simulator in architecture level.

Design of a Large-Scale Multicast Server System (대용량 멀티캐스트 서버 시스템의 설계)

  • In the multicasting communications, the quality of service is not guaranteed occasionally, according to the shortage of resources, because all resources such as communication buffer, processing power for the packet multiplication, and bandwidth, should be shared among each members. This problem can be solved through the hierarchical multicaster construction mechanism which guarantees that all multicaster can be operated within the required performance. This paper proposes the architecture of multipoint communication server based on hypercube type massively parallel computer. Through the simulation, it is verified that the traffic of links between each node of hypercube computer is under the some bandwidth. So, it is certified that the hypercube computer is suitable for the multicast communication servers supporting the various groups.

  • Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) allow to solve the high demand for bandwidth due to the increase in the number of internet users and the explosion of multicast applications. To support multicast applications, network operator computes a tree-shaped path, which is a set of optical channels. Generally, the demand for bandwidth on an optical channel is enormous so that, if there is a single fiber failure, it could cause a serious interruption in data transmission and a huge loss of data. To avoid serious interruption in data transmission, the tree-shaped path of a multicast connection may be protected. Several works have been proposed methods to do this. But these works may cause the duplication of some resources after recovery due to a link failure. Therefore, this duplication can lead to inefficient use of network resources. Our work consists to propose a method of protection that eliminates the link that causes duplication so that, the final backup path structure after link failure is a tree. Evaluations and analyses have shown that our method uses less backup resources than methods for protection of a multicast connection.

  • In this paper, a shared-concurrent file system (S-CFS) is designed and implemented using conventional disks as disk arrays on a Workstation Cluster which can be used as a small-scale server. Since it is implemented on UNIX operating systems, S_CFS is not only portable and flexible but also efficient in resource usage because it does not require additional I/O nodes. The result of the research shows that on small-scale systems with enough disks, the performance of the concurrent file system on transaction processing applications is bounded by the bottleneck of CPUs computing powers while the performance of the concurrent file system on massive data I/Os is bounded by the time required to copy data between buffers. The concurrent file system,which has been implemented on a Workstation Cluster with 8 disks,shows a throughput of 388 tps in case of transaction processing applications and can provide the bandwidth of 15.8 Mbytes/sec in case of massive data processing applications. Moreover,the concurrent file system has been dsigned to enhance the throughput of applications requirring high performance I/O by controlling the paralleism of the concurrent file system on user's side.

  • Recently, there have been large storage demands for manipulating multimedia data. To solve the tremendous storage demands, one of the major researches is the SAN(Storage Area Network) that provides the local file requests directly from shared-disk storage and also eliminates the server bottlenecks to performance and availability. SAN also improve the network latency and bandwidth through new channel interface like FC(Fibre Channel). But to manipulate the efficient storage network like SAN, traditional local file system and distributed file system are not adaptable and also are lack of researches in terms of a metadata structure for large-scale inode object such as file and directory. In this paper, we describe the architecture and design issues of our shared-disk file system and provide the efficient bitmap for providing the well-formed block allocation in each host, extent-based semi flat structure for storing large-scale file data, and two-phase directory structure of using Extendible Hashing. Also we describe a detailed algorithm for implementing the file system's device driver in Linux Kernel and compare our file system with the general file system like EXT2 and shard disk file system like GFS in terms of file creation, directory creation and I/O rate.

  • In this paper, Analyzed Performance of TH/UWB(Time Hopping/Ultra Wideband after Impulse Radio) system in interference environment by existing system that use same frequency band. In case interference fraction ratio is below 0.1, consider and analyzed in case influence through interference in IR system that is shared in 3.1 - 10.6 GHz band hereafter as case that use very small and narrow band than IR system such as 80 MHz bandwidth of ISM band or 802.1la's use bandwidth 20 MHz in 5 GHz band. According to result, we could know that Performance change according to possession band width of interference shows greatly than size of interference electric power. Also, interference fraction ratio is big (more than 0.1) narrowband interference in partial band interference environment, could get Performance improvement of big width increasing pulse repetition number. But, could know that do not influence hardly in system performance when interference fraction ratio is small (below 0.1) narrowband interference. Therefore, may receive the best system performance and transfer efficiency by set the most suitable pulse repetition number according to bandwidth fraction ratio of interference through correct interference fraction ratio estimation and apply proper interference suppression techniques.

  • In this paper, we propose an experimental environment which can be accessed by remote users, where they can select their preferred operating system, and they can use the Power Controllable systems with full permission to access them. The goal of the proposed systems is to provide an experimental environment for the users to join the international experiment that needs high bandwidth network. In order to do that, we provide high performance systems that is directly connected to back-bone network, and we also provide the ability of users to install any application on various operating system. In addition, we provide the ability to keep continuing the system environment of users in shared system environment. We will show how the proposed systems are useful for the users in terms of the user-efficiency to utilize the environment and the response time for the set-up time. This new proposed environments will provide a new experimental method for the scientists who works for international collaborative experimental researches.

Bandwidth-Award Bus Arbitration Method (점유율을 고려한 버스중재 방식)

  • The conventional bus system architecture consists of masters, slaves, arbiter, decoder and so on in shared bus. As several masters can't use a bus concurrently, arbiter plays an role in arbitrating the bus. The efficiency of bus usage can be determined by the selection of arbitration method. Fixed Priority, Round-Robin, TDMA and Lottery arbitration policies are studied in the conventional arbitration method where the bus priority is primarily considered. In this paper, we propose the arbitration method that calculates the bus utilization of each master. Furthermore, we verify the performance compared with the other arbitration methods through TLM(Transaction Level Model). From the results of performance verification, the arbitration methods of Fixed Priority and Round-Robin can not set the bus utilization and those of TDMA and Lottery happen the error of 50% and 70% respectively compared with bus utilization set by user in more than 100,000 cycles. On the other hand, the bandwidth-award bus arbitration method remains the error of less than 1% since approximately 1000 cycles, compared with bus utilization set by user.
