  • The high frequency fluorescnet lighting systems are widely used because of their high luminous efficacy. However, the performance of the fluorescnet lamp at high frequency reveals significant changes depending upon operating frequency, lamp shape, lamp voltage and current while adapting either an electronic or an magnetic ballast. Therefore the matching between the fluorescent lamp and the ballast is the major concern in designing a lighting system. In this paper, high frequency characteristics of the FHF32W lamp is measured in a range of frequencies from 12kHz to 50kHz. And we presented a model of a fluorescnet lamp with non-linear impedance depending on the lamp current. Finally, after identifying the operating condition under negative imped¬ance behavior as lamp current changing, we proposed a method of choosing the optimal parameter of a high frequency fluorescnet lamp and the result is analyzed.

  • We analyzed the reliability characteristics in platinum schottky diodes with variations of n-type silicon substrates concentrations and temperature variations of measurements. The parameters of reliability measurement analysis are saturation current. turn-on voltage and ideality factor in the forward bias, the breakdown voltage in the reverse bias with device shapes. The shape of devices are square type and long rectangular type for edge effect. As a result, we analyzed that the forward turn-on voltage, barrier height, dynamic resistance and reverse breakdown voltage were decreased but ideality factor and saturation current were increased by increased concentration in platinum and n-silicon junction parts. In measurement temperature(RT, $50^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$), the extracted electrical parameter values of reliability characteristics were increased at the higher temperature under the forward and reverse bias. The long rectangular type devices were more decreased than the square type in reverse breakdown voltage by tunneling effects of edge part.

Measurement of Inertia of Turbocharger Rotor in a Passenger Vehicle (승용차용 터보과급기 로터의 관성모멘트 측정)

  • The turbocharger is an essential component to realize the engine down-sizing. The moment of inertia of turbocharger rotor is an important parameter with respect to acceleration performance of the vehicle. It can be calculated from the CAD software based the geometry data and the material properties. But the accurate value of the inertia of turbocharger rotor must be measured through the experimental method. In this study, the measurement of moment of inertia of turbocharger rotor for 2.0 L spark-ignition engine was carried out. First, an experimental equipment using a trifilar method was designed and fabricated. Some optical devices, that is, photo sensor, counter, convex lens, etc, were used to increase the accuracy of the measurement. Second, error sensitivity for the equipment was analyzed. The error of period time and the radius can give big affects to the accuracy of the moment of inertia. When the amount of error of these two were each 1.0 %, maximum error of the moment of inertia was under 3.0 %. Third, the calibration for the equipment was performed using a calibration rotor which has similar shape to turbine rotor but simple. Calculated value from CAD software and measured one for the calibration rotor were compared. The total error of the equipment and the measurement is about 1.3 %. This result shows that the equipment can give the good result with resonable accuracy. Finally the moment of inertia of the turbine rotor and compressor wheel were measured. The coefficient of variations, the ratio of standard deviation to mean value, were reasonably small at 0.57 % and 0.73 % respectively. Therefore this equipment is suitable for the measurement of the moment of inertia of the turbine rotor and compressor wheel.

  • The total hip replacement (THR) has been used as the most effective way to restore the function of damaged hip joint. However, various factors have caused some side effects after the THR. Unfortunately, the success of the THR have been decided only by the proficiency of surgeons so far. Hence, It is necessary to find the way to minimize the side effect caused by those factors. The purpose of this study was to suggest the definite data, which can be used to design and choose the optimal hip implant. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the biomechanical condition of bone cement was evaluated. Stress patterns were analyzed in three conditions: cement mantle, procimal femur and stem-cement contact surface. Additionally, micro-motion was analyzed in the stem-cement contact surface. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed from 2-D computerized tomography (CT) images. Raw CT images were preprocessed by image processing technique (i.e. edge detection). In this study, automated edge detection system was created by MATLAB coding for effective and rapid image processing. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed based on anatomical parameters. The stem shape was designed using that parameters. The analysis of the finite element models was performed with the variation of parameters. The biomechanical influence of each parameter was analyzed and derived optimal parameters. Moreover, the results of FE A using commercial stem model (Zimmer's V erSys) were similar to the results of stem model that was used in this study. Through the study, the improved designs and optimal factors for clinical application were suggested. We expect that the results can suggest solutions to minimize various side effects.

  • Environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel use and energy sources, the big concern is the rise of the current situation, one of the ways to overcome the interest in renewable energy is Gozo.   • In this letter, a compact rectangular spiral antenna is proposed. Instead of a center excitation of conventional spiral antennas, the proposed antenna is adopted a modified feed network, feeding at the end of the spiral. The matching circuit of $'{\sqsupset}'$ shape is added at the feeding point. With this matching circuit, we can easily match the input impedance well, without the limit of the space. The parameter which determines the circular wave characteristic is explained, and the design guideline of the proposed antenna is presented. We design a proposed antenna operating at 9.5 GHz. Its size is only $0.6\lambda_g\times0.6\lambda_g$. The simulated bandwidth of the input impedance $(S11\leq-10)$ is 8.12% and that of $(AR\leq-3)$ is 4.62%, which is excellent characteristics as compared to its simple structure.

  • This paper have analyzed the change of breakdown voltage for channel doping concentration and device parameters of double gate(DG) MOSFET using two dimensional potential model. The low breakdown voltage becomes the obstacle of power device operation, and breakdown voltage decreases seriously by the short channel effects derived from scaled down device in the case of DGMOSFET. The two dimensional analytical potential distribution derived from Poisson's equation have been used to analyze the breakdown voltage for device parameters such as channel length, channel thickness, gate oxide thickness and channel doping concentration. Resultly, we could observe the breakdown voltage has greatly influenced on device dimensional parameters as well as channel doping concentration, especially the shape of Gaussian function used as channel doping concentration.

Active Frequency with a Positive Feedback Anti-Islanding Method Based on a Robust PLL Algorithm for Grid-Connected PV PCS

  • This paper proposes an active frequency with a positive feedback in the d-q frame anti-islanding method suitable for a robust phase-locked loop (PLL) algorithm using the FFT concept. In general, PLL algorithms for grid-connected PV PCS use d-q transformation and controllers to make zero an imaginary part of the transformed voltage vector. In a real grid system, the grid voltage is not ideal. It may be unbalanced, noisy and have many harmonics. For these reasons, the d-q transformed components do not have a pure DC component. The controller tuning of a PLL algorithm is difficult. The proposed PLL algorithm using the FFT concept can use the strong noise cancelation characteristics of a FFT algorithm without a PI controller. Therefore, the proposed PLL algorithm has no gain-tuning of a PI controller, and it is hardly influenced by voltage drops, phase step changes and harmonics. Islanding prediction is a necessary feature of inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) systems in order to meet the stringent standard requirements for interconnection with an electrical grid. Both passive and active anti-islanding methods exist. Typically, active methods modify a given parameter, which also affects the shape and quality of the grid injected current. In this paper, the active anti-islanding algorithm for a grid-connected PV PCS uses positive feedback control in the d-q frame. The proposed PLL and anti-islanding algorithm are implemented for a 250kW PV PCS. This system has four DC/DC converters each with a 25kW power rating. This is only one-third of the total system power. The experimental results show that the proposed PLL, anti-islanding method and topology demonstrate good performance in a 250kW PV PCS.

EFFECTS OF SUPPORT STRUCTURE CHANGES ON FLOW-INDUCED VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF STEAM GENERATOR TUBES

  • Fluid-elastic instability and turbulence-induced vibration of steam generator U-tubes of a nuclear power plant are studied numerically to investigate the effect of design changes of support structures in the upper region of the tubes. Two steam generator models, Model A and Model B, are considered in this study. The main design features of both models are identical except for the conditions of vertical and horizontal support bars. The location and number of vertical and horizontal support bars at the middle of the U-bend region in Model A differs from that of Model B. The stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulence-induced vibration are calculated by a computer program based on the ASME code. The mode shape with a large modal displacement at the upper region of the U-tube is the key parameter related to the fretting wear between the tube and its support structures, such as vertical, horizontal, and diagonal support bars. Therefore, the location and the number of vertical and horizontal support bars have a great influence on the fretting wear mechanism. The variation in the stability ratios for each vibrational mode is compared with respect to Model A and Model B. Even though both models satisfy the design criteria, Model A shows substantial improvements over Model B, particularly in terms of having greater amplitude margins in the turbulence-excited vibration (especially at the inner region of the tube bundle) and better stability ratios for the fluid-elastic instability.

A Study on the Life Characteristic of an Automotive Water-pump Bearing Using the Accelerated Test Method (가속시험법을 활용한 자동차용 워터펌프 베어링의 수명특성에 관한 연구)

  • A water-pump located in the cooling area of a car circulates cooling water. A particular bearing element, known as a water-pump bearing, installed in the rotating part carries the entire load. The failure of this water-pump bearing has a direct impact on the failure of the automobile engine, and so securing its reliability is crucial. Several researchers have examined the design principles of the water-pump bearing, but there are no reports on the life characteristic of the bearing yet. Herein, we report the construction of test equipment to reproduce the spalling of the roller contact, which is the main failure mode of the chosen water-pump bearing. We chose the radial load as an accelerated stress factor and validated the failure mode by monitoring the surface defects. We conducted the accelerated life test after determining the accelerated stress level through a combination of finite element analysis and a preliminary test. In the life tests, we used an accelerometer to perform failure diagnosis. In the last stage of this study, we present a statistical reliability analysis. Thus, we fully estimated the shape parameter of the water-pump bearing, accelerating level on the load , and the lifetime (MTTF and B10 life) under real use conditions, and finally proposed an interval estimation value considering the uncertainty of the estimated value.
