  • The stiffeners, also known as ribs, are utilized to increase the resistance of T-stubs. The author's previous studies showed that stiffeners can increase plastic capacity by an average of 1.71 times. A combined experimental and numerical study was undertaken to examine the effects of the stiffener configuration on the behavior of T-stubs. A total of 20 stiffened T-stubs where the shape and angle of stiffeners were considered as the main parameters were tested under monotonic loading. Rectangular, triangular and AISC types of stiffener were tested under monotonic loading. The experimental results indicated that when the height of the stiffener is equal to or higher than the length of the stiffener, the shape of the stiffener does not have an influence on the behavior. A numerical study using the finite element tool ABAQUS was carried out in order to further investigate the effects of the stiffener shapes. In this case, the height is considered less than the length of the stiffener. Moreover, the shape of the stiffeners was investigated with the different thicknesses of the stiffener. The simulation findings revealed that when the height of the stiffener is less than the length of the stiffener, the shape of the stiffener significantly affects the plastic capacity. Based on the numerical and experimental results, it is recommended to use the triangular shape of the stiffener when height is equal to or higher than the length of the stiffener while it is recommended to utilize the rectangular shape of the stiffener when height is less than the length of the stiffener.

  • Debonding failure characteristics of the composite skin-stiffener specimens were experimentally investigated. The influences of bonding methods, types of stiffener shape and various secondary bonding parameters were evaluated. Present test results combined with the previous test results[1] showed that the failure displacement of the skin-stiffener specimens well evaluates the skin-stiffener debonding failure strength of the composite stiffened panels. The specimens with an open type stiffener had lower bending stiffness and larger failure displacement than those with a closed type stiffener. Secondary bonding and co-curing with adhesive had better failure strength than co-curing without adhesive film. Secondary bonded specimens failed by adhesive failure and co-cured specimens failed by delamination failure. As the bondline thickness was thinner, the skin-stiffener specimens had higher failure strength. The fillets had no influence on failure strength of the specimens. The influence of the surface roughness was shown according to types of stiffener shape.

  • A general stiffener element which includes transverse shear deformation(TSD) is formulated using the p-version of finite element method. Hierarchic C"-shape functions, derived from Integrals of Legendre polynomials, are used to define the assembled stiffness matrix of the stiffener and plate on the basis of 5 D.0.F displacement fields. The stiffness matrix for the stiffener with respect to the local reference frame is transformed to the plate reference system by applying the appropriate transformation matrices in order to insure compatibility of displacements at the junction of the stiffener and plate. The transformation matrices which account for the orientation and the eccentricity effects of the stiffener with respect to the plate reference axes are used to find local behavior at the junction of the stiffener and the relative contributions of the plate and stiffener to the strength of the composite system. The results obtained by the p-version of the finite element method are compared with the results in literatures, especially those by the h-version software, MICROFEAP-II.P-II.

  • A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.

  • In this paper, buckling load of edge stiffened composite plates is assessed. The effect of stiffener edge size, circular hole, and the fiber orientation angle on buckling behavior of composite plates under uni-axial compressive load is investigated. This paper includes two parts as experimental and numerical studies. L-shape composite plates are manufactured in three different layups. Then the buckling loads are experimentally determined. Subsequently, by using the numerical simulation, the size variation effects of stiffener edge and circular cutout on the plate buckling loads are analyzed in five different layups. The results show that cutout size, stiffener edge height and fiber orientation angle have important effects on buckling load. In addition, there is an optimum height for stiffener edge during different conditions.

  • The objective of this research is to study the ultimate moment capacity of the connections between steel I-beams and concrete-filled steel tube columns using different stiffener configurations. The main parameters considered are column cross section shape, square or circular, and filling the column with concrete. This analytical study includes finite element models using ANSYS program taking geometric and material nonlinearities into consideration. These models are verified against the experimental results obtained from previous researches and current design guides. The results show that using proper stiffener configuration affects the stress distribution through the connection and increases the ultimate moment capacity of the connections. Also, circular column is advantageous than the square column for all stiffener configurations and dimensions.

  • The electron beam welding system has the advantages of the high power density, narrow welding section, and small thermal distortion of a workpiece. Recently, the electron beam welding system is widely used to the airplane engineering, nuclear power plant, and automobile industry. In the present paper, the structural analyses on the vacuum chamber of the electron beam welding system are performed by the F.E.M. analysis. The stiffening characteristics on the geometric shape, stiffener height and stiffener span are investigated. The deflection of the stiffened vacuum chamber under pressure is minimized by longitudinal and transverse stiffeners which are continuous in both direction.

  • The paper presented the seismic performance of T-stiffener moment connections for use in steel moment-resisting frames. The connections were strengthened by welding the vertical and horizontal clement of the T-stiffener to the beam flange and column f1ange. Finite clement analysis and experiments were conducted to determine the behavior of T-stiffener-reinforced connections. The results of the finite element analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the T-stiffener, whose horizontal element lengthened to mitigate local stress concentrations of the beam flange on the horizontal stiffener. Full-scale specimens were also tested cyclically to study hysteresis behavior. The main parameters used were the ratio of the T-stiffener to beam strength and the shape of the horizontal element. As the length of the horizontal element increased, the deformation capacity of the connections enhanced. Likewise, all specimens behaved according to the Ramberg-Osgood curve and showed stable hysteresis behavior.

  • In piping systems, trapeze hangers are subjected to vertical and horizontal seismic loads and stiffeners are used. In this study, monotonic compression tests were conducted with the removable stiffeners using three variables: stiffener clamp fixing position, section length, and installation direction. The maximum load reinforced with stiffeners could withstand a compressive load of 11kN by applying a safety factor of 10%. It could be estimated that the fixing clamp spacing or the length of shape and load had a proportional relationship. And the stiffener must be fixed in the direction of the strong axis on hinge parts. Also the stiffener buckiling load design proposes to use a method of calculate the flexural buckling compressive strength of and unreinforced full threaded bolt.
