  • Background: To determine the various sonographic findings in a papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. Materials and Methods: 48 patients with a proven papillary carcinoma of the thyroid were involved. The sonographic features analyzed were the size, shape, content, margin, internal echo, and calcification pattern. Results: Common sonographic features of a papillary carcinoma include the hypoechoic texture (94%), an ill defined margin (81%), a solid nodule (100%), irregular shape (48%), and microcalcifications (35%), or no calcifications (42%). The uncommon features included a hyperechoic or mixed echo texture, cystic elements, a well defined margin, and a coarse or peripheral calcifications. Conclusion: Ill-defined hypoechoic solid nodule with microcalcification is a characteristic ultrasonographic finding of a thyroid papillary carcinoma.

  • Experimental study was conducted for finding the characteristics of machining precision according to the change of feedrate when ball endmilling of semisphere shape. The values of tool deflection and cutting force were measured simultaneously by the systems of eddy-current sensor and dynamometer. The machining precision was analyzed by roundness values, which were deeply relating with tool deflection and forces. the roundness was decreased in down-milling than in up-milling for each feedrate. As the cutting edge is moved to radius direction on the tool path, the tool deflection and the cutting force were seemed to be decreased. As the tool path was moved downward, the values of roundness, cutting force and tool deflection were obtained better ones. When compared the values of roundness, cutting force and tool deflection for different feedrate, the best machining accuracy was obtained at feed rate of 90mm/min in down-milling.

  • Nowadays, owing to the development of techniques for collecting geographic information, an increasing need is thus appearing: integrating heterogeneous databases. This paper proposes an algorithm for finding matching relationship between two node sets in road network data. We found the corresponding node pair using link shape linked with them as well as their location. The accuracy of matching was grown by this process. Result then can be used to reflect the topological information in performing link matching.

  • In general, the cutting pattern of the membrane structures is determined by dividing the complicated curved 3-D surface into several 2-D plane strip by using flattening technique. In this procedure, however, some discrepancies ore occurred between actual stresses of equilibrated state and designed uniform stresses because the material properties are not considered. These deviations can cause the critical structural problems, wrinkling or overstress, and thus a optimization process should be considered. In this paper, a new analytical method for determining an optimum cutting pattern considering material properties is presented. Here, iterative procedure is introduced to decrease the errors caused in numerical process. The optimization method proposed can diminish the deviations occurred by material properties and numerical errors, simultaneously. As a results, it is shown that the final stress distributions for the HP shell model are sufficiently near to design stress distributions, and it can be concluded that this method can be used to obtain the optimized cutting pattern of membrane structures.

  • Image registration is concerned with the establishment of correspondence between images of the same scene with translational, rotational, and scaling differences. The estimated transformation parameters between images are very important information in the field of many applications. In this paper, we propose a shape matching scheme for finding correspondence points for images with various differences, Tranditional solutions to this area are unreliable for the rotational and schaling changes between images, and the feature extraction of partially occluded scene. To solve those problems, dominant points on digital curves are detected by scale-space filtering, and initial matching is performed by similarity measure of cumulative curvatures for dominant points. For initial matching segments pairs, optimal matching points are calculated using dynamic programming. Finally, transformation parameters are estimated.

  • Hand gesture recognition based on vision is a challenging task in human-robot interaction. The sign language of finger spelling alphabets has been tested as a kind of hand gesture. In this paper, we test hand gesture recognition by detecting the contour shape and orientation of hand with visual image. The method has three stages, the first stage of finding hand component separated from the background image, the second stage of extracting the contour feature over the hand component and the last stage of comparing the feature with the reference features in the database. Here, finger spelling alphabets are used to verify the performance of our system and our method shows good performance to discriminate finger alphabets.

  • Cable and membrane structures can be classified as a unstable structure in the view point of shape determination process. An unstable stucture at the initial state generally cannot take a role as the resistance for the external force. Therefore, there should be a stabilizing process to get the stable state of a structure and it is necessary to visualize the shape finding from unstable state to stable state. In this paper, a numerical method of stabilizing procedure for the link structures is presented. The structures are assumed to have rigid movements and thus only changing of the topology of member is considered during the analysis. The generalized inverse matrix and the principle of minimum potential energy are used in the process. Illustrative examples are presented and the results show good convergence.

  • This paper proposes a method which analyzes facial shape and extracts positions of eyes regardless of the tilt and the size of input iamge. With the extracted feature parameters of facial element by the method, full human faces are recognized by a neural network which BP algorithm is applied on. Input image is changed into binary codes, and then labelled. Area, circumference, and circular degree of the labelled binary image are obtained by using chain code and defined as feature parameters of face image. We first extract two eyes from the similarity and distance of feature parameter of each facial element, and then input face image is corrected by standardizing on two extracted eyes. After a mask is genrated line historgram is applied to finding the feature points of facial elements. Distances and angles between the feature points are used as parameters to recognize full face. To show the validity learning algorithm. We confirmed that the proposed algorithm shows 100% recognition rate on both learned and non-learned data for 20 persons.

  • For accurate construction contract time estimation, few parameters are more significant than crew production rates and factors affecting the rates. However, statistical analysis techniques for finding such factors are not always simple mainly because there are many factors and the interaction between factors is not well quantitatively understood. This paper presents methodology of identifying factors driving crew production rates. The methodology is further demonstrated with representative data collected by the author from 13 on-going highway constructions. Three factors were identified as statistically significant drivers of Cap crew production rate: 'Cap Size (m3/ea)'; 'Cap Length (m)'; and 'Cap Shape (Rectangle vs. Inverted 'T')'. It was also found that the production rates are best explained by a multiple regression model with two of the drivers; 'Cap Size' and 'Cap Shape'.

  • A general approximate optimization technique by sequential design domain(SDD) did not save response values for getting an approximate function in each step. It has a disadvantage at aspect of an expense. In this paper, previous response values are recycled for constructing an approximate function. For this reason, approximation function is more accurate. Accordingly, even if we did not determine move limit, a system is converged to the optimal design. Size and shape optimization using approximate optimization technique is carried out with SDD. Algorithm executing Pro/Engineer and ANSYS are automatically adopted in the approximate optimization program by SDD. Convergence criterion is defined such that optimal point must be located within SDD during the three steps. The PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm is used to solve approximate optimization problems. This algorithm uses the second-order information in the direction finding problem and uses the active set strategy.
