  • Sulfur Hexafluoride, SF6 is widely used for leak detection and as a gaseous dielectric in transformers, condensers and circuit breakers. SF6 gas is also effective as a cleanser in the semiconductor industry. This paper presents a numerical study of the sealing force of disk type seal in SF6 gas safety valve. The sealing force on the disk seal is analyzed by the FEM method based on the Taguch's experimental design technique. Disk seals in SF6 gas safety valve are designed with 9 design models based on 3 different contact length, compressive ratio and gas pressure. The calculated results of Cauchy stress and strain showed that the sealing characteristics of Teflon PTFE is more effective compared to that of FKM(Viton), which is related to the stiffness of the materials. And also, the contact length of the disk seal is important design parameter for sealing the SF6 gas leakage in the safety valve.

  • The insulator used for the transmission line is a device that is bonded with a cap, pin, ceramic, and cement to withstand insulation capacity and mechanical load. The insulator design can help to reduce the dispersion of the electric field; thus, the optimization of today's design, especially as demanded power grows, is critical. The designs of four manufacturers were used to perform a comparative analysis. Under dry circumstances of the new product, an electric field distribution study was done with no pollutants attached. Manufacturer D's design has the best voltage uniformity of 24.33% and the arc length of 500 mm or more. Manufacturer C's design has an equalizing voltage of more than 2% higher than that of other manufacturers. The importance of the design of the insulator and the number of connections according to the installation conditions is very efficient for transmission lines that will increase in the future.

  • In this paper, a variational formulation for plane elasticity problems is derived based on an isogeometric approach. The isogeometric analysis is an emerging methodology such that the basis functions for response analysis are generated directly from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry. Furthermore, the solution space for the response analysis can be represented in terms of the same functions to represent the geometry, which enables to provide a precise construction method of finite element model to exactly represent geometry using B-spline base functions in CAD geometric modeling and analyze arbitrarily shaped structures without re-meshing. In this paper, a continuum-based adjoint sensitivity analysis method using the isogeometric approach is extensively derived for the plane elasticity problems. The conventional shape optimization using the finite element method has some difficulties in the parameterization of geometry In the isogeometric analysis, however, the geometric properties are already embedded in the B-spline basis functions and control points so that it has potential capability to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. Through some numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity analysis method is verified to show excellent agreement with finite difference sensitivity.

  • The rail clamp is the device to prevent that a crane slips along rails due to the wind blast as well as to locate the crane in the set position for loading and unloading containers. The wedge typed rail clamp should be designed to consider the structural stability and the durability because it compresses both rail side with large clamping force by the wedge working as the wind speed increases. In this research, the design of experiments(DOE) and the variation technology(VT) built in ANSYS WORKBENCH are utilized to determine the optimum shape of a jaw. The optimum results obtained by two methods are compared and examined.

  • In the conceptual design phase of jet fighters, the trade study is performed repeatedly for a selection of the baseline configuration. The automation of repeated trade study makes possible to select efficiently the baseline configuration. In this study, the performance analysis code was developed for the automation of trade study. The code was consists of the module of shape generation, the module of weight estimation, the module of mission performance analysis. 3D CAD Model can be generated by the module of shape generation and Weight can be estimated by using the empirical equation in the module of weight estimation. The module of mission performance analysis was able to calculate the mission performance about the arbitrary mission profile. In addition, the optimal mission performance can be calculated by using optimization method. By performing the validation, the code was confirmed to be able to apply to the conceptual design phase.

  • This study deals with the design of a safety device around a leisure boat propeller. The safety device is to be designed to minimize performance degradation attached to propulsors in coastal waters. These devices, important for preventing propeller accidents, negatively gives influence boat performance, especially at higher speeds. In order to minimize the negative effect, the accelerating ducts, normally used in ESDs (Energy Saving Devices) have been chosen as a safety device. The present study aims to design an optimal duct (minimizing negative effect) through the parametric study. Based on the Marine 19A nozzle, the nozzle's thickness and angle were varied to obtain the optimum parameter in the preliminary design by the computational fluid dynamics program Star-CCM+ Ver. 15.02. In the detailed design, a NACA 4-digit Airfoil shape resembling the Marine 19A by modification at the trailing edge was chosen and the optimum shape was chosen according to variation of camber, thickness, and incidence angle for optimization. The optimally designed duct shows a speed decrease of about 10% in the sea trial result, which is much smaller than the normal speed decrease of at least 30%. The present designing method can give wide applications to the leisure boat because the wake is almost the same due to using the outboard propulsor.

  • The main purpose of the ball valve ball is to be moved by the rotation of the stem when fully open or completely closed. In this study the heat of the initial model, which used a structure interaction analysis technique, tried to examine the structural safety of the high temperature for the ball valve. In the initial model the stress of the exiting sheet was more than the yield strength. We selected two design shapes with variables of length and thickness for the optimization of the sheet. The Kriging interpolation method was applied to a meta-model-based optimization technique. As a result, it was possible to find a thickness and length for the sheet within the yield strength. This was done by measuring the value of the capacity coefficient of the valve and evaluating the performance of the ball valve.

  • With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.

  • In this paper, a study on optimization of three dimensional multi-layered metallic disk array structure(MDAS) excited by circular waveguides was performed to shape efficient flat-topped element patterns(FTEP) of ${\pm}$20$^{\circ}$ beam width. Each radiating element of the MDAS is composed of input, transition and radiation circular waveguides and finite metal disks stacked on radiation circular waveguide. It has an array structure of a hexagonal lattice appropriate for the conical beam scanning. The analytic algorithm for the MDAS was proposed and the code was also programmed using it. Optimal design parameters of the MDAS were determined through the optimal simulation process to obtain ${\pm}$20$^{\circ}$ FTEP. Also, bandwidth characteristics for FTEP and reflection coefficients of the MDAS were investigated and, as the results, it was shown that the MDAS could shape good FTEPs of ${\pm}$20$^{\circ}$ beam width in main planes at least within a 5.6 % frequency band.
