  • We propose an algorithm for extracting the boundary of an object. In order to take full advantage of global shape, our approach uses global shape parameters derived from Point Distribution Model (PDM). Unlike PDM, the proposed method models global shape using curvature as well as edge. The objective function of applying the shape model is formulated using Bayesian rule. We can extract the boundaries of an object by evaluating iteratively the solution maximizing the objective function. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce computation cost than the PDM and it is robust to noise, pose variation, and some occlusion.

  • Hippocampus is an important part of brain which is related with early memory storage and spatial navigation. By observing the anatomy of hippocampus, some brain diseases effecting human memory (e.g. Alzheimer, schizophrenia, etc.) can be diagnosed and predicted earlier. The diagnosis process is highly related with hippocampus segmentation. In this paper, hippocampus segmentation using Active Shape Model, which not only works based on image intensity, but also by using prior knowledge of hippocampus shape and intensity from the training images, is proposed. The results show that ASM is applicable in segmenting hippocampus from whole brain MR image. It also shows that adding more images in the training set results in better accuracy of hippocampus segmentation.

  • In this paper, extracting design information from arbitrary aspherical lens shape in reverse engineering is introduced. Deformation terms and sphere data equation with various variables compose asphere equation. Aspherical lens shape is expressed with complicated polynomial expression that includes deformation terms and sphere data. Deformation term and vertex curvature have direct influence on a geometric shape and an optical characteristics of aspherical lens. Hence, extracting these information mean that design information could be derived and analyzed from shape data of arbitrary aspherical lens. Furthermore, sharing designer's experience and knowledge for aspherical lens design could be expected.

  • In the design of bridges, the points of concem are the landscape design, the function, safety and economical efficiency. But most of studies have been performed on structural engineering. The study on the landscape design of bridges has not been done in korea. Therefore, in this research, the design method of bridges by the judgement of structural engineering and landscape engineering has been proposed, through the process to decide the shape of bridges. Also, the research studies a problem about the visual safety of the structural shape in the landscape design of bridges. The visual experiments applied to the seven models about the shape of hunch in bridge pier. The experiment was made in moving velocity of view point, steady looking time and track of eyeball movement.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of the coaxial magnetic gear according to the shape of the same gear ratio are analyzed using the two - dimensional finite element analysis. The rotor shape is SMCMG, CPCMG and RCMG. After this we analyzed the characteristics according to three shapes. Also, the amount of permanent magnet used in each shape was compared. Next, characteristics analysis of the magnetic gear according to the shape at the same torque was performed. And the total weight and efficiency of the magnetic gears were compared and verified.

  • The screen printing method is much used in the flat panel display field including the LCD, PDP, FED, organic EL, and etc. for forming the high precision micro-pattern. Also A number of studies of screen printing method has been conducted as the method for the cost down through the improvement of productivity. Because of being the dot printing method of the cylindrical shape not being the line printing method like the existing PDP barrier rib and phosphor, the pillar arrays using the screen printing method is deposited in the hemispherical type not being cylindrical shape in the existing printing process conditions. In this paper, the parameters were set on the screen printing device in order to deposit the cross-sectional shape with the cone or trapezoid shape of the pillar in depositing the pillars used the screen printing device for vacuum glazing. The cross-sectional shape slope of the pillar according to the parameters was measured. And analysis the effect of the screen printing process conditions on the cross-sectional shape slope of pillars based upon the result of being measured. The processing conditions were drawn to minimize the cross-sectional shape slope of pillar.

  • Shape-from-shading (SFS) or stereo vision algorithms can be utilized to measure the shape of an object with imaging techniques for effective sensing in non-contact measurements. SFS algorithms could reconstruct the 3D information from a 2D image data, offering relatively comprehensive information. Meanwhile, a stereo vision algorithm needs several feature points or lines to extract 3D information from two 2D images. However, to measure the size of an object with a freeform surface, the two algorithms need some additional information, such as boundary conditions and grids, respectively. In this study, a stereo vision scheme using the depth information obtained by shape-from-shading as patterns was proposed to measure the size of an object with a freeform surface. The feasibility of the scheme was proved with an experiment where the images of an object were acquired by a CCD camera at two positions, then processed by SFS, and finally by stereo matching. The experimental results revealed that the proposed scheme could recognize the size and shape of freeform surface fairly well.

  • In this study, the effect of the shape error of a guideway on the movement of a stage that uses an air bearing is analyzed. The shape error of moving parts supported by the air bearing is known not to affect the vibrations of moving parts as much as the magnitude of the shape error. This is called the "averaging effect." In this study, the effect of shape error on a guideway, as well as the averaging effect of an air-bearing system, is analyzed theoretically using a dynamic-analysis program. The dynamic-analysis program applies a commercially available code in COMSOL and solves the Reynolds equation between the stage and the guideway, along with the equation of motion of the stage. The stage is modeled as a two-degree-of-freedom system. The shape error is applied to the film thickness function in the form of a sine wave. The stage movement is analyzed using the fast Fourier transform process. The eccentricity and tilting are found to be proportional to the amplitude of the shape error of the guideway. Stage vibrations are less than 10% of the amplitude of the shape error on the guideway. This means that the averaging effect of the air bearing is verified quantitatively. Moreover, if the air supply position matches the shape error in the guideway, there is a notable change in eccentricity and tilting.

  • Restenosis symptom, which is well known as a problem of stents, is due to the recoil and expansion pressure depending on shapes of stent. In order to reduce the effect of recoil problem, study on pattern and shape for the stent is required and the expansion pressure and recoil should be evaluated. This paper aims at evaluating mechanical characteristics of stent used in surgery for vessel stenosis. The expansion process of coronary artery stent in vessel for two models including the Cypher$^{(R)}$ from Johnson & Johnson$^{TM}$ and a suggested model were simulated using the Finite Element Analysis. Comparison of the directional recoil simulation results was made. The issues in the deformed shape of vessel and recoil of Cypher$^{(R)}$ were partially resolved in the suggested model. Therefore, the shape design suggested in this paper was able to reduce the restenosis symptom.
