Knowledge which is represented by formal logic are widely used in many domains such like artificial intelligence, information retrieval, e-commerce and so on. And for medical field, medical documentary records retrieval, information systems in hospitals, medical data sharing, remote treatment and expert systems need knowledge representation technology. To retrieve information intellectually and provide advanced information services, systematically controlled mechanism is needed to represent and share knowledge. Importantly, medical expert's knowledge should be represented in a form that is understandable to computers and also to humans to be applied to the medical information system supporting decision making. And it should have a suitable and efficient structure for its own purposes including reasoning, extendability of knowledge, management of data, accuracy of expressions, diversity, and so on. we call it ontology which can be processed with machines. We can use the ontology to represent traditional medicine knowledge in structured and systematic way with visualization, then also it can also be used education materials. Hence, the authors developed an Shanghanlun ontology by way of showing an example, so that we suggested a methodology for ontology development and also a model to structure the traditional medical knowledge. And this result can be used for student to learn Shanghanlun by graphical representation of it's knowledge. We analyzed the text of Shanghanlun to construct relational database including it's original text, symptoms and herb formulars. And then we classified the terms following some criterion, confirmed the structure of the ontology to describe semantic relations between the terms, especially we developed the ontology considering visual representation. The ontology developed in this study provides database showing fomulas, herbs, symptoms, the name of diseases and the text written in Shanghanlun. It's easy to retrieve contents by their semantic relations so that it is convenient to search knowledge of Shanghanlun and to learn it. It can display the related concepts by searching terms and provides expanded information with a simple click. It has some limitations such as standardization problems, short coverage of pattern(證), and error in chinese characters input. But we believe this research can be used for basic foundation to make traditional medicine more structural and systematic, to develop application softwares, and also to applied it in Shanghanlun educations.
Objectives : The practices of Wei-qi and Nutritive-qi are generally divided into external Mai and internal Mai. However, they are closely interrelated and practiced together. While taking these aspects into consideration, this paper attempts to make interpretations in relation with Nutritive-qi the disease pathogens that appear in Shanghanlun's disease symptoms. Methods : Using the practice and function of Nutritive-qi described in Huangdineijing, the paper shall make interpretations for the patterns of Mawhangtang, patterns of Gaejitang, and the pathologies of pain, oedema, and nosebleed as described in Shanghanlun. Results & Conclusions : The pain from the patterns of Gaejitang differ from that of the patterns of Mawhangtang. First, the pain from the the patterns of Gaejitang cannot be the main symptom. Even if there is a symptom of pain, it's severity is not serious. Second, the pain from the patterns of Gaejiang takes the form of stiffness, and not general bodily pain. The reason for this stiffness is because of the emptiness of Wei-qi that leads to the congestion of Nutritive-qi which in turn causes the lack of qi and blood flow in muscula area such as abdomins. The symptom of oedema where one's body becomes swollen comes from a number of pathogens. First, the flow of meridian becomes hindered due to external dampness, a character which tends to be adhesive when added with humidty, and this results in the blockage of water qi which then causes the coagulation of nutritive blood. Second, when toxic heat is repressed and blocked within the lesser-yang channel, lesser-yang meridian stops working, which causes nutritive blood to clog at the front and back of ears since lesser-yang channel flows through that portion of body. Third, although oedema is not specifically mentioned in the sentences, but there exists the patterns of Daechungyongtang where water lumps are formed due to the accumulation and blockage of watery dampness. The patterns of Daechungyongtang is cuased when meridian is hindered from externally discharging body fluid due to a problem with meridian that blocks the fumigated internal heat which turns into bodily fluid from being discharged externally.
Objectives : To examine various ways non-glutinous rice has been applied in different formulas of "Shanghanlun" and the relationship between non-glutinous rice and the formulas' effects. Methods : First, texts that included non-glutinous rice were selected from the "Shanghanlun". Then, they were categorized according to the application of non-glutinous rice, followed by analysis of its relationship with each formula. Results : Most formulas that used non-glutinous rice in raw form when decocting with other ingredients included Shigao. Non-glutinous rice alleviates coldness of Shigao as in the case with Taohuatang where it stops diarrhea. Non-glutinous rice used in Wumeiwan warms the center and boosts Qi and helps the medicinal ingredients to bind when made into pellets. In Guizhitang and Lizhongwan, non-glutinous rice assists Stomach Qi. In Shizaotang, porridge is taken after diarrhea to help quick recovery. To prevent damage of Zheng Qi, Baisan can be mixed with rice water for administration. The level of cathartic effect can be managed through giving cold or hot porridge to the patient according to his/her response to the medicine. Mazirenwan, Mulizexiesan, Banxiasan, Sinisan, Wulingsan are mixed in rice water for administration. It makes it easier to swallow than when mixed with plain water. The application of rice flour is either internal or external. In Zhufutang, where rice flour is parched, it harmonizes the center and stops diarrhea. In Daqinglongtang when there is too much perspiration, warm powder is sprinkled on the skin to stop sweating. Clear porridge in Jiuziyisifang and rice flour in Shechuangzisan were exclusive to "Jinguiyaolue", while Baisan and rice water mixture could only be found in "Shanghanlun". Conclusions : The excavation and research on various ways non-glutinous rice was applied in treatment holds certain meaning in contemporary practice of Korean Medicine where treatment leans heavily on medicinal treatment rather than food, and all ingredients are boiled together in large quantities for most decoctions.
Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) is the oldest document in the literature on clinical records of Traditional Asian medicine (TAM), on which TAM theories about symptoms-herbs relationships are based. In this study, we aim to quantitatively explore the relationships between symptoms and herbs in Shanghanlun. The text in Shanghanlun was converted into structured data. Using the structured data, Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) scores of symptoms and herbs were calculated from each chapter to derive the major symptoms and herbs in each chapter. To understand the structure of the entire document, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed for the 6-dimensional chapter space. Bipartite network analysis was conducted focusing on Jaccard scores between symptoms and herbs and eigenvector centralities of nodes. TF-IDF scores showed the characteristics of each chapter through major symptoms and herbs. Principal components drawn by PCA suggested the entire structure of Shanghanlun. The network analysis revealed a 'multi herbs - multi symptoms' relationship. Common symptoms and herbs were drawn from high eigenvector centralities of their nodes, while specific symptoms and herbs were drawn from low centralities. Symptoms expected to be treated by herbs were derived, respectively. Using measurable metrics, we conducted a computational study on patterns of Shanghanlun. Quantitative researches on TAM theories will contribute to improving the clarity of TAM theories.
In Neijing(內經) the theory of Reverse(厥) was explained syncope causes by disharmony of emotions irregularity, deficient or excessive Qi(氣虛, 氣實) and blood disorder, it was the causes of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet except coldness itself, include impairment of Qi circulation and the deficiency of the kidney weakened essence and blood, weakness and damage in the kidney essence, deficiency of the lower part and deficiency of the lower Qi as the major causes. In Shanghanlun(傷寒論) the theory of Reverse(厥) was divided into by disharmony of heat or cold reversal symptom. In Jingyue quanshu(景岳全書), causes of Reverse(厥) was Qi and blood disorder, damps(痰飮), alcohol and sex include syncope. In Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑), causes of Reverse(厥) was deficient or excessive Qi, impairment of blood circulation which means the deficiency of blood, essence(精) and blood stasis (瘀血), and disorder of gastrointestinal system which means malfunction of gastrointestine, damps(痰飮) and toxicity of alcohol. The rest of the causes include San syndrome(疝症), sun stroke(暑病) and heat reversal(熱厥).
In order to analyze principles of taking concoction and make clear the origin of contraindication against five pungent vegetables, the regulations of Guizhitang prescription in "Shanghanlun" the twelfth article and "Wushierbingfang", "Wuweihandaiyijian", "Jinguiyaolue" were researched. Four principles of taking concoction were put in order; strengthening the effect of concoction by eating hot rice gruel and wearing bedclothes, preventing decline of drug effect by food regulations, optimization of elution and effect of material herbs by crushing, low heating, determination of administration time based on manifestations of drug effect by sweating and its aspect. These principles and methods of taking concoctions were developed from boiling to simple processing of material herbs, contraindication in the middle of taking concoction and perspiration by wearing bedclothes and eating hot rice gruel in order from the analysis of medical literatures. The contraindication against pungent vegetables were generalized in early Dong-Han dynasty already, and the five pungent vegetables were inferred as Allium tuberosum, Allium bakeri regel, spring onion, wild rocambole and garlic in medical context to the exclusion of religious idea. The reason of prohibition against five pungent vegetables could be interpreted as optimization of therapeutic effects by pharmacological control of pungent ingredients because the healthy qi damage and evil qi retention were resulted from destroying of harmonious ying and wei by overeating pungent vegetables during disease state. Conclusively the regulations of Guizhitang prescription referred to taking concoction in "Shanghanlun" fulfilled their functions to maximize pharmacological effects through various ways inside and outside and these reasonal principles of taking concoction has been influenced over the traditional medical practice deeply.
This study utilized Corpus-based Analysis process to compare the Cold Pathogen chapter in the 'English version of "Donguibogam"' to the 'English version of the "Shanghanlun"' translated by 罗希文 (Luo xi wen). Results of the linguistic analysis indicate that TTR, a ratio of number of types to number of tokens in the English version of "Shanghanlun" was 5.92% while TTR in the Cold pathogen chapter of English version of "Donguibogam" was 6.01%. It was also noted that the types of words frequently appearing in the two publications were the scientific name of medicinal herbs; the method of producing the herbal prescription (including terminology representing weights and measures); and Chinese descriptions of concepts considered important in both Korean and Chinese medicinal practices. Finally, it was possible to find points of comparison in naming of symptoms, diagnosis, prescriptions, and respective names of six meridians. Though the language difference is minimal, the vocabulary found in the Cold Pathogen chapter of "Donguibogam" was more diverse than Luo's translation of "Sanghanlun". In general, literal translation in keeping with the sense of original text was better performed in Luo's translation of the "Sanghanlun" whereas the English version of the Cold Pathogen chapter in the "Donguibogam" was more of a "free" translation.
In order to research the pathological entity of Jueyin disease in ${\ll}Shanghanlun{\gg}$, some sharing concept of three-yin-three-yang used in ${\ll}Neijing{\gg}$ and ${\ll}Shanghanlun{\gg}$ were investigated first, and then the meaning of jueyin and jueyin disease were analyzed. In cold damage disease, time-space factor is important because the pathological change is rapid and the symptoms along path are similar, therefore three-yin-three-yang having complex meaning of time and space can be used as an appropriate pathological concept. So to speak, it is able to be interpreted as various modes like variations of yin-yang, qi-blood, change of pulse condition, theories of opening, closing, pivot or exuberance and debilitation of form and qi manifested in the six districts of the human body following disease process. Jueyin is between front taiyin and rear shaoyin, and it's attribution is inherent in qi stagnation and yin exuberance in relative to the location of flank and liver. Putting together above descriptions, pathological entity of jueyin disease is that the symptoms mingled with cold and stagnant heat competing each other when a subject having qi stagnation in flank with cold in extremities and lower abdomen in particular is seized with cold influenza.
Objectives : By understanding the basic information as a text about the original script, composition and characteristic of "Shanghanlunzhujie" which is included in "Uibang-yuchwi", We are evaluating value and significance of the text today. Methods : First of all, We are finding what the original script is through comparing different editions. Then by concrete analysis about texts, We are going to determine which standards affected "Shanghanlunzhujie" and "Uibang-yuchwi", and which elements included in those texts. In addition, We are figuring out what the characteristics are in the those texts roughly. Through this consideration, We could evaluate value and significance of the text. Results & Conclusions : In the course of research, We found that this publication deserves attention in the hereditary history of the "Shanghanlun" editions. First, the version of the "Shanghanlunzhujie" in the "Uibang-yuchwi" is surely the Won(元) edition. Based on recent research findings, the Won edition is the earliest version of Chengwuji's "Zhujieshanghanlun". Not only does it contain the original contents, it restored the deleted annotations of the Song edition, constituting the most accurate "Shanghanlun" edition closest to the original form of today.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to determine the origin and daily dose of Gardeniae Fructus in Shanghanlun. Methods : Define the origin and daily dose of Gardeniae Fructus by searching Shanhanlun and Herbology Books(本草書). And Compared these with those of current Gardeniae Fructus. Results : According to Shanhanlun, the origin of Gardeniae Fructus is Gardenia jasminoides, but G. jasminoides f. longicarpa must excluded since originally it was used for dyeing. Among the 8 prescriptions containing Gardeniae Fructus, 15 Gardeniae Fructuses for the daliy dose in Chijabekpi-tang(Zhizibopi-tang) is assumed to be 14 Gardeniae Fructuses, as it is found 14 in many other prescriptions same in other prescriptions. The quantity of 14 Gardeniae Fructuses in Shananlun is 3 Ryang(兩), which is equal to 19.5 g in the current measurement. 1 Gardeniae Fructus is equal to 1.4 g. The length of the Gardeniae Fructus in the market which is produced in korea is 22-27 mm, and the diameter is 15-19 mm, whereas in China it is 20-25 mm, and the diameter is 13-18 mm. This meets the standard requirements of the Pharmacopoeia. Conclusions : As a result from above, the origin of Gardeniae Fructus is Gardenia jasminoides, but G. jasminoides f. longicarpa must be excluded. The recommended dose in a day is 14 Gardeniae Fructuses, which is equivalent to 19.5 g, the amount generally used in Shanhanlun.
