Objectives : The purpose of this study is to show the importance of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) paleography. Shanghanlun(傷寒論) must be thoroughly reinterpreted through graphonomy evidence. Methods : The object of this study is Gangpyeong-Shanghanlun(康平傷寒論), which is known as the oldest edition of Shanghanlun(傷寒論). This study compares the paleographic meaning of Shanghanlun(傷寒論), Mai(脈), Shanghanlun provisions 96 and 103 to existing interpretations. Results : Mai(脈) doesn't mean 'Radial pulse(Chon.Gwan.Cheok)' in Shanghanlun(傷寒論), so the meaning of Mai(脈) should be redefined. Mai(脈) means 'Continuous movement of human body' based on Chinese paleography. Also it's being verified as reasonable hypothesis in recent clinical researches. In addition, Shanghanlun(傷寒論) paleography makes it possible to grasp the true intention of Zhang Zhongjing(張仲景). Conclusions : Shanghanlun(傷寒論) paleography has a limit that it cannot be perfectly applied to clinical diagnosis. Also, it may not represent the whole meaning of Shanghanlun (傷寒論). Therefore, the value of Shanghanlun(傷寒論) reinterpretation should be recognized through this study, and we should continuously find out future values from Shanghanlun(傷寒論).

The main purpose of this study is to lay the groundwork of mutual assistance between Shanghanlun and Sa-sang Constitutional Medicine by looking into their differences and similarities in the concept and the medical treatment in the diaphoretic therapy and the purgative therapy. The study compared Shanghan Jomun quoted in Soeumin. Dongyi-Soose-Bowon with Je-ma, Lee's Theory of Medicine. And its conclusion is the following: 1. Both Shanghanlun and Sa-sang Constitutional Medicine connote the concept of pathogenic factors in the Nae-Kyung Medicine as the medicinal substances. And both of them have the fundamental structure of exterior-to-interior movements in the symptoms of disease to appear when pathogenic factors penetrate into the bodies. 2. Sa-sang Constitutional Medicine has treated the causes and the mechanism of disease in the symptoms of disease differently from other therapies: focusing on the body's constitutional symptom of disease. namely Soeumin's lack of the Yang-Qi and the poor Ascending Yang, not an attack on pathogenic factors as a interior-exterior symptom. Therefore Ascending-yang Supplying Qi, which fills up the lacking parts of the body and keeps the balance of the body fitted in one's constitution, has been used rather than the diaphoretic and purgative therapy. 3. As Shanghanlun and Sa-sang Constitutional Medicine have the similarities in the interior-to-exterior structure, pathogenic factors. and the notion of diaphoresis and purgation, they do so in the principle of the medicinal substance and the therapy. However, there are actually differences of carrying out the diaphoretic and purgative therapy and other treatments between Shanghanlun and Sa-sang Constitutional Medicine by the reason of the dissimilarities in the mechanism of disease and focal points.

Objective : The objective of this study is to define the conceptional meaning of Shanghanlun provision while applying Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods : 2 clinical cases, whose patients were treated by Injinho-tang, which was selected according to Shanghanlun provisions dualized with Je-Gang(提綱) and Jo-Moon(條文), were analyzed. Results : According to the results of analysis of 2 cases, the patients' diseases were improved when the treatment was applied according to Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system and the interpretation of Shanghanlun provisions according to the etymology of Chinese character. Conclusions : These results suggests that Shanghanlun provisions be applied according to etymological interpretation of Chinese character in Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system.

Objective : This study is to report four cases complaining of neck pain that diagnosed by Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system and treated with the Shanghanlun Shaozhen(燒針) provision herbal medicine. Methods : Based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system, we analyzed four cases treated with Shanghanlun Shaozhen(燒針) provision herbal medicine. Results : In all cases, the NDI and NRS score improved. Conclusions : In Shanghanlun, Shaozhen(燒針) may indicate neck pain. And neck pain can be relieved by administering Shanghanlun Shaozhen(燒針) provision herbal medicine.

Objective : The objective of this study is to define the clinical meaning of Shanghanlun sentence by applying Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods : 2 clinical cases, which were treated by Oreong-san according to Shanghanlun provisions dualized with Je-Gang(提綱) and Jo-Moon(條文), were analyzed. Results : According to the results of analysis of 2 cases, the patients' diseases were improved. The pain was decreased, and general weakness and anorexia were improved in 2 cases. Conclusions : These results suggests that the medicines from Shanghanlun are clinically effective when Shanghanlun is interpreted considering the origins of Chinese characters in the text, and Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system is applied.

Objective: This study aimed to report the improvement of a patient with nummular eczema treated by herbal medication based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS). Methods: According to the Shanghanlun DPIDS, the patient was diagnosed with Reverting yin disease (provision 351), and was administered Danggwihweyeok-tang for 30 days. The result of administration was evaluated by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and a visual analog scale (VAS). Results: After administration of Danggwihweyeok-tang for 30 days, the DLQI decreased from 18 to 0 and the VAS decreased from 10 to 1. Conclusions: The affected skin region recovered. This case report suggests that the words "厥" and "細" in the 351st Shanghanlun provision refer to physical and internal causes of nummular eczema.

Objective : The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of three different herb medication based on Shanghanlun(傷寒論) six differential diagnostic system. Methods : According to six differential diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, they were diagnosed with Taiyang-byung(大陽病), Yangmyung-byung(陽明病), Gwoleum-byung(厥陰病). They took different herb medications more than 6weeks according to their diagnosis. This paper evaluated the results of treatment by pregnancy test result with improvement of symptoms. Results : The symptoms of three patients were improved and became pregnant. Conclusions : This case study suggests that herb medication based on Shanghanlun(傷寒論) six differential diagnostic system have effectiveness on unexplained infertility. And we need to have a diversified and new perspectives in women's position about pregnancy with this system.

Objective: The purpose of this paper is to report the improvement in a patient with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) treated with herbal medication based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods: According to the 'Disease Pattern Identification Diagnostic System based on Shanghanlun Provisions,'the patient was diagnosed with Guorem-byung number 350 provision, and took Baekho-tang herbal medication for 15 days. The result of administration was evaluated using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: After administration of Baekho-tang for 15 days, based on the 350 provision of Baekho-tang diagnosed according to the Shanghanlun provisions, the DHI score decreased from 74 to 16 and the VAS score decreased from 10 to 1. Conclusions: The patient recovered from symptoms of BPPV. This case report suggests that the words '滑,''厥,''裏'on the 350 provision of Shanghanlun mean physical and psychological causes of BPPV in this case.

Objective : The objective of this study is to explore the meaning of 弦 in Shanghanlun through analyzing two cases. Methods : Two cases treated with modified Soshiho-tang, which is administrated when 弦 aggravates chief complaints, were analyzed. All of the cases were diagnosed by disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun Provisions. Results : The patients' chief complaints of all 2 cases were improved after administration of modified Soshiho-tang. As pulling symptom was reduced in all 2 cases, patients' disease were relieved. Through the etymological research and clinical treatment results, the clinical meaning of 弦 is deduced as 'pulling'. Conclusions : The etymological and clinical analysis suggest that the concept of '弦' maybe defined as 'pulling' in Shanghanlun.

After a comparative study on between Shanghanlun(傷寒論) and Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) in Pathogenesis, I got a conclusion like this. Sa-sang consitutional medicine(四象醫學) changed the directions to the medicine in the center of personality from the medicine in the center of Shanghanlun(傷寒論)'s demonstration, devided the personality of people by the size of Organ system(臟腑) into 4types of Tae-eum, Yo-yang, Tae-yang, Yo-eum(太少陰陽), and explains all the course of physiology, pathology, diagnosis, therapy of the body on the point of constitutional view. Comparing the features of two medicines, Shanghanlun(傷寒論) and Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學), Shanghanlun(傷寒論) devided the diseases into the three type of eum-yang based on eight principal syndroms(八綱原理), in accordance with evidence of illness, pulse and studied the therapy, Shanghanlun(傷寒論) set up the basis of medicine which is based on overall of symptoms and signg(辨證論治醫學). Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) distinguished the image(象) which is devided by the size of inherited Organ system(臟腑), refered to the symptom of diseases(病症) and decided the therapic directions. So Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) gave more accuracy to the therapy by subdeviding the process of differenciation of case(辨證) into 2 steps of differenciation of image(辨象) and differenciation of case(辨證). In view of etiologic factor, Shanghanlun(傷寒論) regarded it as a invading of pathogenic factors(邪氣), so Shanghanlun(傷寒論) has the medical theory of pathogenic factors(邪氣). But Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) regarded it as a disorder of the genuine energy(正氣)'s movements(升降緩速), so Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) has the medical theory putting first of genuine energy(正氣). But Shanghanlun(傷寒論) also recognized the constitutional difference basically and Sa-sang consitutional medicine(四象醫學) devided the constitution into Tae-eum, Yo-yang, Tae-yang, Yo-eum(太少陰陽) and explained the food-air-fluid metabolism(飮食-氣液之氣病證) as cold-hot, cool-warm and devided the the symptom of diseases(病症) into the interior and the exterior(表裏) as the up-down, slow-fast movements of eum-yang and insufficiency and excessiveness is between them. In the end, Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) has the theory of eight principal syndroms(八綱原理) faithfully which is the theory of differenciation of case(辨證理論) of Shanghanlun(傷寒論). Therefore Shanghanlun(傷寒論) made a lot of influence on originating Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學), Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) is the theory which is based on existing medical theory including Shanghanlun(傷寒論) and composed the new medical theory to the constitutional point of view. Sa-sang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) enriched the medical theory and developed the clinical medicine so it has the historical value in the medicine.
