  • In general structures, cleavage fracture may develop under the low constraint condition of larger scale yielding with a shallow surface crack. However, standard procedures for fracture toughness testing require very severe restrictions of specimen geometry. So the standard fracture toughness data makes the integrity assessment irrationally conservative. In this paper, cleavage fracture toughness tests have been made on side-grooved PCVN (precracked charpy V-notch) type specimens (10 by 10 by 55 mm) with varying crack depth, The constraint effects on the crack depth ratios are quantitatively evaluated by scaling model and Weibull stress method using 3-D finite clement method, After correction of constraint loss due to shallow crack depths, the statistical size effect are also corrected according to the standard ASTM E 1921 procedure, The results snowed a good agreement in the geometry correction regardless of the crack size, while some over-corrections were observed in the corrected values of $T_0$.

Uplift capacity of single vertical belled pile embedded at shallow depth

  • This study investigates the uplift capacity of a single vertical belled pile buried at shallow depth in dry sand. The laboratory model experiments are conducted with different pile-tip angles and relative densities. In addition, image and FEM analyses are performed to observe the failure surface of the belled pile for different pile-tip angles and relative densities. Accordingly, the uplift capacity and failure angle in the failure surface of the belled pile were found to depend on the belled pile-tip angle and relative density. A predictive model for the uplift capacity of the belled pile was proposed considering the relative density and belled pile-tip angle based on a previous limit equilibrium equation. To validate the applicability of the proposed model, the values calculated using the proposed and previous models were compared to those obtained through a laboratory model experiment. The proposed model had the best agreement with the laboratory model experiment.

세굴을 고려한 얕은 기초 교량의 동적거동 분석 및 지진 취약도 해석 (Dynamic Behavior and Seismic Fragility Analysis of Shallow Foundation Bridge Considering Scour)

  • If scour is occurred at shallow foundation of bridge, seismic performance of the bridge will be reduced. In order to evaluate accurate seismic response of bridge according to scour depths, modeling of foundation reflecting scour effect is important. In this study, taking into account the effect of the reduction in embedment depth of the shallow foundation by scouring, the soil around the foundation is modelled as an equivalent soil spring with various stiffness. Seismic fragility analyses for 3 types of bridges subjected to 4 types of ground motions classified into Site Class A, B, C, D are evaluated according to several scour depths. From the fragility analysis results, it can be observed that the deeper the scour depth, the higher probability of exceeding damage states. Also, seismic failure probability of asymmetric bridge is higher than that of symmetric bridge.

자유항주모형시험을 이용한 KVLCC2 선형의 천수영역에서의 조종성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Manoeuvrability of KVLCC2 in Shallow Water by Free Running Model Test)

  • It has been reported that a ship sailing in shallow water possesses better straight-line stability due to the change of fluid flow around the ship. This tendency affects manoeuvring characteristics of the ship. To investigate this phenomenon, indoor free running model test(FRMT) on KVLCC2 was carried out in three water depth conditions(H/T = 1.2, 1.5 & 2.0). Turning circle tests(± 35° ) and zigzag tests(± 20° /5° and ± 20° /10° ) were conducted with newly developed indoor FRMT system, and the manoeuvring results were compared with test results from other institutes. As the water depth decreased, the yaw rate of the ship decreased, and the distances of circular trajectories at the same heading angle increased in the turning circle tests. The first overshoot angles of the zigzag tests decreased. From both tests, the time for course change increased as the water depth decreased. These manoeuvring characteristics show that KVLCC2 in shallow water becomes more stable in terms of straight-line stability.

논 담수심처리에 따른 물수지 분석 (Analyses Water Balance for Ponding depth Treatment)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of ponding depth treatment on water balance in paddy fields. The ponding depth treatments were very shallow, shallow and deep. Daily values of rainfall amount, ponding depth, irrigation water, drainage water, evapotranspiration, and infiltration were measured in the field. The medium ponded plots saved irrigation water about 16% to 53.4% without any statistical difference in rice growth and yields. Hence, the medium ponded depth treatment is better than the traditional deep ponded depth to save water in the transplanted rice culture.

심도 변화에 따른 흥해지역 지하수의 수리 지화학적 특성 (Hydrogeochemical Characteristics of Groundwater on Well Depth Variation in the Heunghae Area, Korea)

  • 포항시 흥해읍 일대 지하수의 수리 지화학적 특성 을 파악하기 위하여, 지표수, 천부지 하수 및 중간심도와 심부 지하수를 대상으로 수질 및 안정 동위 원소 분석 을 수행하였다. 심도별 수질 유형은 지표수 및 천부지하수는 Ca-Cl, 중간 심도는 $Na-HCO_3$, 심부지하수는 Na-Cl형이 우세하게 나타난다. $HCO_3^-$ $SiO_2$의 기원은 천부 지하수의 경우 규산염광물의 풍화에서, 심부지하수는 탄산염 광물의 풍화에서 생성되었다. Ca 및 Mg이 온은 천부 및 심부 모두 석회 석 및 백운석에서 기인한다. 천부 지하수의 $SO_4^{2-}$ 기원은 황철석에서 기인하는 것으로 나타난다 심도의 증가에 따라 pH 및 TDS는 증가하나, Eh및 DO는 감소하는 경향을 보인다. 알카리 금속(K, Na, Li.)은 심부로 갈수록 농도가 증가하나, 알카리 토금속(Mg, Ca) 및 AL은 천부로 갈수록 증가하는 양상을 보인다. 음이온인 할로겐 원소(F, Cl, Br) 및 $HCO_3^-$의 농도도 심부로 갈수록 증가함을 보인다. 산소 및 수소 안정동위원소 평균값은 심부 지하수는 평균값: ${\delta}^{18}O=-10.1\%_{\circ},\;{\delta}D=-65.8\%_{\circ}$, 중간심도는 평균값: ${\delta}^{18}O=-8.9\%_{\circ},\;{\delta}D=-59.6\%_{\circ}$ 천부 지하수는 평균값: ${\delta}^{18}O=-8.0\%_{\circ},\;{\delta}D=-53.6\%_{\circ}$지표수는 평균값: ${\delta}^{18}O=-7.9\%_{\circ},\;{\delta}D=-53.3\%_{\circ}$의 값을 각각 보인다.

얕은터널에서 측벽파괴시 주변지반 거동에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental study on the behavior of the adjacent ground due to the sidewall failure in a shallow tunnel)

  • 최근 도심지 등에서 활용도가 높아지고 있는 얕은터널은 구조물에 인접하여 얕은 심도에 건설하므로 그 거동에 따른 주변지반 변위에 대한 연구는 아직 충분하지 않다. 특히, 얕은터널의 측벽에서 변위가 일어나면 주변지반의 이완형태 및 주변지반으로 전이되는 하중의 분포와 크기가 영향을 받을 수 있다. 그러나 지금까지 터널의 측벽변위에 관련된 연구는 많지 않고 그나마 터널과 주변지반을 평면변형률조건(plane strain state)으로 단순화하고 터널 전체의 안정이나 파괴메커니즘 규명에 대한 연구에 국한되어 있고, 터널 측벽일부의 변위에 따른 영향을 연구한 사례는 거의 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 터널측벽의 변위가 터널 주변 횡방향 하중전이에 미치는 영향을 규명하였다. 이를 위하여 탄소봉으로 지반을 조성하고 알미늄으로 터널의 형상을 모형화하여 터널의 한쪽측벽에 수평으로 변위를 주어 토피(0.5D, 0.75D, 1.0D, 1.25D)를 변화시키면서 모형시험을 수행하였고, 일부 측벽의 파괴에 따른 주변지반의 하중전이 거동을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 얕은터널에서 토피가 일정깊이(0.75D) 이상이면 토피고에 무관하게 일정한 형태로 터널 측벽파괴가 발생하였고 반대측벽에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 그러나, 토피고가 일정깊이 이하일 경우에는 한쪽 측벽의 파괴가 반대쪽 측벽에까지 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 터널 굴착시 측벽변위가 예상변위량의 50% 발생하면, 터널 파괴는 75% 이상 진행되는 것을 발견하였다. 그러나, 지반조건에 따라 차이를 보일 수 있으므로 이에 대한 추가적인 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Low-Oxygen Atmosphere and its Predictors among Agricultural Shallow Wells in Northern Thailand

  • Background: In 2006, three farmers died at the bottom of an agricultural shallow well where the atmosphere contained only 6% oxygen. This study aimed to document the variability of levels of oxygen and selected hazardous gases in the atmosphere of wells, and to identify ambient conditions associated with the low-oxygen situation. Methods: A cross-sectional survey, conducted in June 2007 and July 2007, measured the levels of oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and explosive gas (percentage of lower explosive limit) at different depths of the atmosphere inside 253 wells in Kamphaengphet and Phitsanulok provinces. Ambient conditions and well use by farmers were recorded. Carbon dioxide was measured in a subset of wells. Variables independently associated with low-oxygen condition (<19.5%) were identified using multivariate logistic regression. Results: One in five agricultural shallow wells had a low-oxygen status, with oxygen concentration decreasing with increasing depth within the well. The deepest-depth oxygen reading ranged from 0.0% to 20.9%. Low levels of other hazardous gases were detected in a small number of wells. The low-oxygen status was independently associated with the depth of the atmosphere column to the water surface [odds ratio (OR) = 13.5 for 8-11 m vs. <6 m], depth of water (OR = 0.17 for 3-<8 m vs. 0-1 m), well cover (OR = 3.95), time elapsed since the last rainfall (OR = 7.44 for >2 days vs. <1 day), and location of well in sandy soil (OR = 3.72). Among 11 wells tested, carbon dioxide was detected in high concentration (>25,000 ppm) in seven wells with a low oxygen level. Conclusion: Oxygen concentrations in the wells vary widely even within a small area and decrease with increasing depth.

천수 영역에서의 Series 60 선형에 대한 실험적 고찰 (An Experimental Study on the Shallow Water Effect on Series 60 Hull Form)

  • 연안항로용 선박에 있어서 수심은 선박의 흘수와 속도에 제한을 주는 요소로 작용함으로써, 설계에 있어서 상당히 중요한 요소라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 제한수심에 따른 선박의 저항성능의 변화를 알기 위해, 천수장비를 이용하여 각기 다른 수심에서 선박의 저항 및 트림, 침하를 측정하였다. 천수영향에 대한 기초적 연구단계로서, 본 연구에서는 Series60($C_B=0.6$) 선형을 대상 선형으로 선정하였다. 실험은 기존의 실험 자료와 동일한 수심조건을 주어 그 결과를 비교하였다. 수심조건은 각각 모형선 수선간장의 10, 15, 20, 25% 로 하였다.

시나리오별 논에서의 Molinate 노출위험도 분석: (1) 시뮬레이션 결과 분석 (Scenario-Based Exposure Risk Assessment of Molinate in a Paddy Plot : (1) Analysis of simulation results)

  • The effects of water and pesticide management practices on ponded water pesticide concentrations in a paddy plot were analysed using the RICEWQ model. The molinate which is a herbicide widely used in rice culture, and frequently detected in paddy environment was selected. In a previous study, the RICEWQ model was successfully calibrated with field data obtained from a paddy plot in Daegu. The calibrated model was run using water and pesticide management scenarios with a set of measured meteorological data for 1997-2006 in Daegu. For all three ponded water depths with the label rate application, the amount of molinate dissipated in ponded water and volatilized accounted for more than 70%, and the runoff losses were less than 9%. The molinate losses through drainage in the very shallow ponded depth showed 40% less than that in deep ponded depth. Comparing with the deep and shallow ponded depth, the very shallow depth was the best with regards to the reduction of molinate runoff losses. Simulations with different pesticide application rates, label rate and double label rate, showed molinate concentrations in the ponded water increased linearly with the application rate increase.
