  • In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system was developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility was lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations was employed for developing the equation of the motion. The Assumed Modes Method was used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearity, stiffness hardening and softening.

  • Turbine-generator torsional response is caused by interaction between electrical transient air-gap torque and mechanical characteristics of turbine-generator shafts. There are various factors that affects torsional interaction such as fault, circuit breaker switching and generator mal-synchronizing, etc. Fortunately, we can easily simulate above torsional interaction phenomena by using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). However, conventional EMTP shows the incomplete response of super- synchronous torsional mode since it does not consider turbine blade section. Therefore, in this paper, we introduced mechanical-electrical analogy for detailed modeling of turbine-generator shaft system including low pressure turbine blade section. In addition, we derived the natural frequencies of modeled turbine-generator shaft system including turbine blade section and analyzed the characteristics of mechanical torque response at shaft coupling and turbine blade root area according to power system balanced/unbalanced faults.

  • In case of limited power supply, a rotating shaft system may not reach its operating speed that is greater than its critical speed, but the speed oscillates with small ampllitude near critical speed. As a result, it is considered that the operating mode plays an important role in the smooth start of machines. In order to investigate the dynamic behaviors of the rotating shaft system at the beginning stage, one has derived the equations of motion whose degrees of freedom is three, two translations and one rotation. The simultaneous differential equations are numerically solved by using runge-Kutta method, and thus the small time step length could be required corresponding to the stability of solution. Three types of operating modes dependent upon the driving torque rate have been numerically investigated according to the maximum displacement of shaft center. The first type of relation is linear, the second type is composed of two linear curves recommended by machine manufacturer, and the last one is the proposed torque curve reflecting the frequency response curve of one degree of freedom system. For the second type of modes, it is found that the optimal range of intermediate speed to the critical speed lies between 0.8 and 0.9. In addition to that, the maximum displacement can be reduced more if the third type of mode is utilized.

  • The alignment of propulsion shaft systems by the fair curve method has been developed over the past twenty years and in recent years its basic problems have been almost solved. At the present time, studies on introducing actual conditions are being undertaken. In a fair curve alignment, its aim is to achieve a stable shaft system which will be relatively insensitive to misalignment or the influence of external factors such as thermal variations due to the sunshine, speed change, etc. The key point of fair curve alignment is the calculations of reactions in the straight support and reaction influence numbers. The present authors have developed those calculating method by the matrix method of the three-moment theorem. The fair curve alignment is based on the analysis of propulsion shaft system which is assumed as a continous beam on multiple support points. The propeller shaft is divided into several elements. For each element, the nodal point equation is derived by the three-moment theorem. Reaction of supporting points of straight shaft and reaction influence numbers are calculated by the matrix calculation of each nodal point equation. It has been found that results of calculation for the model shaft agree well with those of experiment which had been measured by the strain gauge method. Results of calculation for the actual propulsion shafting of the steam turbine had been compared also with those of Det norske Vertas.

  • An eigenvalue design sensitivity formulation of a general nonsymmetric-matrix rotor-bearing system is devised. using the DDM (direct differential method). Then, investigations on the design sensitivities of critical speeds are carried out for an APU turbogenerator with a spline shaft connection. Results show that the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the stiffness changes of bearing models of spline shaft connection points is negligible, and thereby their modeling uncertainty does not present any problem. And the passing critical speeds up to the 4th critical speed are not sensitive to the design stiffness coefficients of four main bearings. Further, the dependence of the rate of change of the critical speed on the shaft-element length changes shows quantitatively that the spline shaft has some limited influence on the 4th critical speed but no influence on the 1st to 3rd critical speeds. With no adverse effect from the spline shaft, the APU system achieves a critical speed separation margin of more than 40% at a rated speed of 60,000 rpm.

  • An axle drive shaft with double joint shaft, cross kit and yoke has an important role by transferring power and changing steering angle between axle and wheel in power train system. It has been used widely in the heavy machinery requiring a high reliability in the power train system. At fatigue failures of the axle drive shaft with the long span, a relatively high stress concentration at a snap ring groove on the drive shaft brings to significant fatigue damages under repeated loading condition. As Peterson's suggestions on this study, a relief groove in the vicinity of the snap ring groove is applied by decreasing the stress concentration and improving the fatigue life of axle drive shaft. By using FEM analysis, the decreasing effect of the stress concentration and extended fatigue life are due to the change of design parameters related with size and location of the relief groove. The relief groove with the design parameters such as d/b=2.0 and r/h=1.2 enables to decrease the stress concentration of 22.3% and increase the fatigue life more than 3 times by comparing with no relief groove application.

  • Magnetic bearing is the machine element that supports the shaft without mechanical contact using the magnetic force induced by permanent magnet of electromagnet. Active magnetic bearing system is composed of sensor, controller, power amplifier, and electromagnet. If all the elements were dieal, shaft position could be controlled to sensor resolution, Because each elements inreal system have mechanical and electricla losses and nonlinearity, it is impossible to attain the desired performance using general control algorithm. So far it has been studied on improvement of the control algorithm of the electric characteristics of each elements. Another factors to affect shaft behavior are the manufacturing errors due to machine work, and assembling errors due to accumulate manufacturing errors of the radial magnetic bearing. This paper describes that the shaft behavior due to accumulate manufacturing errors and asymmetric bolting. This paper describes that the shaft behavior due to assembling errors of the radial bearings donot affect the rotaitonal accuracy of the shaft. But when the amplitude of the assembling errors increasees over the certain value, the bearing can not support the shaft properly.

  • Recently, a large number of open-pit mines are planning to change their mining method to underground types because the environmental concerns and legal regulations are increased with a rise in the standard of living. The K silica mine, which is one of them and located in Kyunggi province, is planning the establishment of a vertical shaft which will be used for ore-pass channel in their new glory hole mining method. This vertical shaft will be designed to join with a horizontal gangway excavated from the ground level. In this new mining system, the excavated ore particles will be stored inside a shaft and transported out with a help of a conveyor belt. Therefore the hang-up of ore particles in a shaft, the control of gate at the bottom of a shaft, the installation of dog-leg at the gate should be investigated identically. In this study, the PFC-2D code which is one of the discrete element numerical methods has been applied to simulate the particle flow mechanism in a shaft, and the optimum mine design has been proposed to maximize the productivity and to minimize the system damage.

  • This study suggests a new type shaft generator driven by hydraulic power suitable for small size vessels. Since the shaft generator system is very easy to be affected by disturbances such as speed variation of main engine and load variation of the generator, a robust servo control must be implemented to obtain stable electric power with constant frequency. Thus, in this study two types of controller design method-the reference following optimal control method and robust servo control method-are adopted to the controller design. In the experiment, static and dynamic characteristics of the shaft generator system according to the variation of input frequency setting, the speed variation of the pump and the load variation of the generator are investigated. From the considerations on the computer simulation results and experimental results, it is ascertained that the shaft generator system proposed in this study has good control performances.

  • A nonlinear dynamic model for the shaft-disk-blade unit is developed in this study. In this regard, the rotating flexible blade, with a pre-twist angle, attached to a rigid disk driven by a shaft which is flexible in torsion is developed. The rotor-blade coupled model is derived using Lagrange equation in conjunction with the assumed mode method to discretize the blade deformation. The equations of motion are analyzed based on the small deformation theory for the blade and shaft torsional deformation to obtain the system natural frequencies for various system parameters.
