A CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis is presented to predict hydrodynamic characteristics of a marine propeller. A commercial RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation) solver, namely FLUENT, is utilized in conjunction with fully unstructured meshes around rotating propeller. Mesh generation process is greatly accelerated by using fully unstructured meshes composed of both isotropic and anisotropic tetrahedral elements. The anisotropic tetrahedral elements were used in the flow domain near the blade and shaft, where the viscous effect is important, having complex shape yet resolving the thin boundary layers. For other regions, isotropic tetrahedral elements are utilized. Two different approaches simulating rotational effect of the propeller are employed, namely Moving reference frame technique for steady simulation, and Sliding mesh technique for unsteady simulation. Both approaches are applied to the propeller open water (POW) test simulation. The current results, which are thrust and torque coefficients, are compared with available experimental data.

This paper addresses the development of a scroll expander for power generation from relatively low temperature steam source. It has a double-sided orbiting scroll member so that no thrust bearing is needed to support the base plate of the orbiting scroll. Three power transmission shafts are placed at the periphery of the orbiting scroll base plate, and these shafts can also function as anti-rotation devices. Final output is obtained from the main central shaft engaged with the three power transmission shafts through gear assembly. The clearance between the fixed and orbiting scroll elements was estimated by comparing measurement of the mass flow rate with calculation results of a computer simulation. Due to large clearance, the expander total and volumetric efficiencies were measured to be $34\%\;and\;43\%$, respectively. It has been shown through the computer simulation that the total and volumetric efficiencies could be improved to $65\%\;and\;83\%$, respectively, if the current clearance is reduced by half.

A torque converter, connected to a transmission/transaxle input shaft, connects, multiplies and interrupts the flow of engine torque into the transmission. Damper springs are usually equipped in a torque converter to convert stably the torque power supplied from engine. Damper Springs generally have the most flexible design variables among vehicle transmission parts, so that they could be effective design factors to improve the entire vehicle's performance. Damper spring, however, has geometric complexity after it equipped in a torque converter. For that reason, modeling a damper spring requires expert's knowledge to determine many design parameters and satisfy the functional requirements at the same time. In this paper, we introduce an optimum design method applied in detailed-design stage to reduce design process and financial loss caused by adequate design. Many design variables have to be classified and structuralized for Optimization. This also could make designer concentrate on functional requirements of damper spring, not on design possibility. In addition, modeling an assembled spring has technical restriction with primitives of the current major CAD solutions because of complexity of assembled spring shape. Thus, one of modeling solution presented in this paper since detailed and exact modeling is important for CAE or DMU.

One of the biggest problems in smoke control systems for high-rise buildings is stack effect, but there are no recognized methods or measures to solve the problem of stack effect as yet. The stack effect can be overcome by forming the uprising current inside the stair hall properly, but there is a limit to the height in supplying into the stair hall the smoke control air volume to be supplied to a floor in case of escape from fire. The limit to the height can be extended by over-coming the stack effect by pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. It can also be anticipated that the stack effect can be overcome by connecting the air supply shaft to the stair hall at the top. As a result of computer simulations using a network type of tool, it is found that adequate performance can be achieved by pressurizing the stair hall only for a building of 190m or less, and up to 360m when pressurizing the stair hall and the ancillary room simultaneously. In all those cases, however, an overpressure venting damper is required which operates within a suitable range for venting the overpressure outside.
Although many patients who undergo bunion repair do well and have satisfactory results, a critical evaluation of these results shows the potential for improvement. Metatarsal deformity of the hallux valgus is a 3-dimensional deformity, including rotation in the coronal plane. Theoretically, it is important to understand the 3-dimensional displacement of the first metatarsal for correcting the deformities of valgus rotation in the frontal plane. Yet the current methods of metatarsal osteotomy principally attempt to correct the deformity in the transverse plane. The modified technique for the Lapidus procedure can be used in a variety of hallux valgus conditions and severities, and the early results suggest that a powerful correction can be maintained. In addition, efforts have been made to correct the 3-dimensional deformity by performing metatarsal shaft osteotomy. In the case of degenerative arthritis, first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is a good option to correct the 3-dimensional deformation. Correction of the 3-dimensional deformity, including a rotational deformity in the frontal plane of the metatarsals, should be considered when selecting surgical treatment and is essential for achieving a good prognosis for patients with hallux valgus. This article reviews the classification and treatment of hallux valgus for correction of the 3-dimensional deformity.

In this paper, the variable speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor driven by a sinus¬oidal PWM inverter based on maximum torque sensitivity is presented. The developed torque or speed control is achieved by the field orientation technique. For the field orientation, the resolver is used as the rotor positioning sensor mounted on the motor shaft without pull-out of the synchonism at any speed. To show the validity of proposed control method, the simulation and experimental results are provided. The advantages of the proposed control method are to achieve the fast current and speed responses.

A new method of induction motor drive, which requires not shaft encoder, is presented. This system has both torque and speed controls that are performed by vector control. The scheme is on the basis of a rotor flux speed control, which is performed by torque producing current and rotor flux, derived from the stator voltages and currents. But, there is a problem with respect to the calculated rotor flux vector, which is an integrating operation by which the rotor induced voltage is converted into the rotor flux. The calculated rotor flux does not work so that it is unstable in initial operation, as motor speed approaches zero. For the proposed rotor flux estimator, a lag circuit is employed, to which both the motor-induced voltage and rotor flux command are imposed, and it is possible to calculate even a low frequency down to standstill. We show the validity of the proposed control method through several computer simulations.
Voltage dips caused by transmission system faults are usually of a short duration. High speed relaying and breaker operation will typically limit the disturbance to 0.1 seconds. Most motor controllers obtain their control power directly from the bus by means of a control transformer. Under this condition, a voltage dip can cause the contactor to drop out. disconnecting the motor from the line. The rapid re-energizing of the controller is in effect a fast reclosure which may result in motor damage. The time delay re-energizing of controller will result in a greater loss of speed and possibly loss of stability. Other means of controller can be used to prevent the motor from being disconnected from line during the fault. This can be accomplished by DC power controller or mechanically latched controller. This paper demonstrates that DC power controller or mechanically latched type controller to prevent the motor from being disconnected from line during the fault is, the most effective in minimizing speed reduction, transient motor current, transient motor torque and transient shaft torque by EMTP calculation.

In this paper, we present technical survey results on propulsion systems for Personal Air Vehicles (PAV). Reciprocating engines are suitable for current PAVs because of their superior efficiency and price advantages, except they produce noise problems. Turbo-Shaft engines are suitable for VTOL PAVs because of high specific power and wide operating range even though they are expensive. However, fuel cells and batteries may replace conventional engines in the near future.
The turbine efficiency is an important factor in power plant, and accurate evaluation of steam turbine performance is the key issue in turbo machinery industry. The difficulty of evaluating the steam turbine performance due to its high steam temperature and pressure environment makes the most steam turbine tests to be replaced by air similarity test. This paper presents how to decide the similarity conditions of the steam turbine test and describes its limitations and assumptions. The test facility was developed and arranged to conduct an air similarity turbine performance test with various inlet pressure, temperature and mass flow rate. The eddy-current type dynamometer measures the turbine-generated shaft power and controls the rotating speed. Pressure ratio of turbine can be controled by back pressure control valve. To verify its test results, uncertainty analysis was performed and relative uncertainty of turbine efficiency was obtained.
