Sensitivity Improvement of Shadow Moiré Technique Using LED Light and Deformation Measurement of Electronic Substrate (LED 광을 이용한 그림자 무아레 방법의 감도 향상 및 모바일 전자 기판의 변형 측정)

  • Electronic substrates used in a mobile device is composed of various materials, and when the temperature is changed during manufacturing or operating, thermal deformation and stress concentration occur due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient of each material. The shadow moiré technique is a non-contact optical method that measures shape or out-of-plane displacement over the entire area, but it is necessary to overcome the Talbot effect for high sensitivity applications. In this paper, LED light sources of various wavelengths was used to overcome the Talbot effect caused in the shadow moiré technique. By using the phase shift method, an experimental method to retain the measurement sensitivity within 10 ㎛/fringe was proposed and evaluated, and this method is applied to the thermal deformation measurement of the mobile electronic substrate. In the case of using white light, there were several areas that could not be measured due to the Talbot effect, but in the case of using blue LED light, it was shown that a precise moiré pattern with a sensitivity of 6.25 ㎛/fringe could be obtained in most areas.

  • Recently with smart phones and tablets, next generation mobile communication systems have supported various multimedia contents services. Thus, multimedia communication systems have been gradually increased compared to voice communication systems. Since the growth of multimedia services has increased users' duration on systems and decreased systems' effectiveness on power, a study on effective usage of power needs to be researched. Furthermore, radio shadow areas under heavy urban environments have generated unnecessary power consumption which reduces the usage duration of power on next generation mobile communication systems. This paper has reviewed the communication network architecture on next generation mobile communication systems and the unnecessary power consumption in radio shadow areas. This paper has also proposed the method of the effective power usage and analyzed the effective power usage on next generation mobile communication systems with simulation.

High Spatial Resolution Satellite Image Simulation Based on 3D Data and Existing Images

  • This study proposes an approach for simulating high spatial resolution satellite images acquired under arbitrary sun-sensor geometry using existing images and 3D (three-dimensional) data. First, satellite images, having significant differences in spectral regions compared with those in the simulated image were transformed to the same spectral regions as those in simulated image by using the UPDM (Universal Pattern Decomposition Method). Simultaneously, shadows cast by buildings or high features under the new sun position were modeled. Then, pixels that changed from shadow into non-shadow areas and vice versa were simulated on the basis of existing images. Finally, buildings that were viewed under the new sensor position were modeled on the basis of open library-based 3D reconstruction program. An experiment was conducted to simulate WV-3 (WorldView-3) images acquired under two different sun-sensor geometries based on a Pleiades 1A image, an additional WV-3 image, a Landsat image, and 3D building models. The results show that the shapes of the buildings were modeled effectively, although some problems were noted in the simulation of pixels changing from shadows cast by buildings into non-shadow. Additionally, the mean reflectance of the simulated image was quite similar to that of actual images in vegetation and water areas. However, significant gaps between the mean reflectance of simulated and actual images in soil and road areas were noted, which could be attributed to differences in the moisture content.

  • As according to utilizing mobile devices, the real time locating system to provide high quality service is required. RTLS based on wireless communication can be damaged from radio shadow areas which guarantee the line of sight. To cope with the radio shadow area, this paper proposes the performance improvement method using assistant tags and a directional antenna based reader. In addition, this paper also provides the design and implementation of RTLS and experiments for performance evaluation. The result shows that a success rate is increased up to 38% and accuracy is a CEP of 1.13 meters.

  • Additional high resolution satellite images, other period or site, are essential for efficient city modeling and analysis. However, the same ground objects have a radiometric inconsistency in different satellite images and it debase the quality of image processing and analysis. Moreover, in an urban area, buildings, trees, bridges, and other artificial objects cause shadow effects, which lower the performance of relative radiometric normalization. Therefore, in this study, we exclude shadow areas and suggest the selective histogram matching methods for image based application without supplementary digital elevation model or geometric informations of sun and sensor. We extract the shadow objects first using adjacency informations with the building edge buffer and spatial and spectral attributes derived from the image segmentation. And, Outlier objects like a asphalt roads are removed. Finally, selective histogram matching is performed from the shadow masked multi-temporal Quickbird-2 images.

Terrain Shadow Detection in Satellite Images of the Korean Peninsula Using a Hill-Shade Algorithm (음영기복 알고리즘을 활용한 한반도 촬영 위성영상에서의 지형그림자 탐지)

  • In recent years, the number of users has been increasing with the rapid development of earth observation satellites. In response, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) has been striving to provide user-friendly satellite images by introducing the concept of Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and defining its requirements as CEOS ARD for Land (CARD4L). In ARD, a mask called an Unusable Data Mask (UDM), identifying unnecessary pixels for land analysis, should be provided with a satellite image. UDMs include clouds, cloud shadows, terrain shadows, etc. Terrain shadows are generated in mountainous terrain with large terrain relief, and these areas cause errors in analysis due to their low radiation intensity. previous research on terrain shadow detection focused on detecting terrain shadow pixels to correct terrain shadows. However, this should be replaced by the terrain correction method. Therefore, there is a need to expand the purpose of terrain shadow detection. In this study, to utilize CAS500-4 for forest and agriculture analysis, we extended the scope of the terrain shadow detection to shaded areas. This paper aims to analyze the potential for terrain shadow detection to make a terrain shadow mask for South and North Korea. To detect terrain shadows, we used a Hill-shade algorithm that utilizes the position of the sun and a surface's derivatives, such as slope and aspect. Using RapidEye images with a spatial resolution of 5 meters and Sentinel-2 images with a spatial resolution of 10 meters over the Korean Peninsula, the optimal threshold for shadow determination was confirmed by comparing them with the ground truth. The optimal threshold was used to perform terrain shadow detection, and the results were analyzed. As a qualitative result, it was confirmed that the shape was similar to the ground truth as a whole. In addition, it was confirmed that most of the F1 scores were between 0.8 and 0.94 for all images tested. Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that automatic terrain shadow detection was well performed throughout the Korean Peninsula.

  • Shadow images are a representative medium and means of expression for the imagination that exists between consciousness and unconsciousness for thousands of years. Wherever light exists, people create play with their own shadows without special skills, and have made a fantasy at once. Shadow images have long been used as subjects and materials of literacy, art, philosophy, and popular culture. Especially in the field of art, people have been experimenting with visual stimulation through the uniqueness of simple silhouettes images. In the field of animation, it became to be recognized as a form of non - mainstream areas that are difficult to make. However, shadow images have been used more actively in the field of digital arts and media art. In this Environment with technologies, Various formative imaginations are being expressed more with shadow images in a new dimension. This study is to introduce and analyze these trends, the aesthetic transformations and extended methods focusing on digital silhouette animation and recent media art works using shadow images. Screen-based silhouette animation combines digital technology and new approaches that have escaped conventional methods have removed most of the elements that have been considered limitations, and these factors have become a matter of choice for the directors. Especially, in the display environment using various light sources, projection, and camera technology, shadow images were expressed with multiple-layered virtual spaces, and it becomes possible to imagine a new extended imagination. Through the computer vision, it became possible to find new gaze and spatial images and use it more flexibly. These changes have given new possibility to the use shadow images in a different way.

A Way for Creating Human Bioclimatic Maps using Human Thermal Sensation (Comfort) and Applying the Maps to Urban and Landscape Planning and Design (인간 열환경 지수를 이용한 생기후지도 작성 및 도시·조경계획 및 디자인에의 적용방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to find applicabilities of human bioclimatic maps, using human thermal sensation(comfort) in summer, with microclimatic in situ data and computer simulation results at the study site of downtown Daegu. This includes the central business district(CBD) area and two urban parks, the Debt Redemption Movement Memorial Park and the 2.28 Park, for urban and landscape planning and design. Climatic data and urban setting information for the analysis of human thermal sensation were obtained from in situ measurement and the geographic information system data. As a result, the CBD had higher air temperature than the parks when the wind speed was low. Relative humidities were opposite to the air temperature. Especially, same directional streets with local wind direction had lower air temperature than streets perpendicular to the wind direction. The most important climatic variable of human thermal sensation in summer was direct beam solar radiation. Also, creating shadow areas would be the most relevant method for modifying hot thermal environments in urban areas. The most effective method of creating shadow patterns was making a tree shadow over a pergola, and the second best one was making a tree shadow on the front of north directional building walls. Moreover, how to plant trees for creating shadow patterns was important as well as what kind of trees should be planted. The results of human thermal sensation were warm to very hot at sunny areas and neutral to warm at shaded ones. At the sunny areas, wide, squared shape areas had a little bit higher thermal sensation than those of narrow streets. The albedo change of building walls 0.15 and ground surface 0.1 could change 1/6 of a sensation level at the shaded areas and 1/3 at the sunny ones. These microclimatic approaches will be useful to find appropriate methods for modifying thermal environments in urban areas.

  • ShadowCam is a high-sensitivity, high-resolution imager provided by NASA for the Danuri (KPLO) lunar mission. ShadowCam calibration shows that it is well suited for its purpose, to image permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) that occur near the lunar poles. It is 205 times as sensitive as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC). The signal to noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 100 over a large part of the dynamic range, and the top of the dynamic range is high enough to accommodate most brighter PSR pixels. The optical performance is good enough to take full advantage of the 1.7 meter/pixel image scale, and calibrated images have uniform response. We describe some instrument artifacts that are amenable to future corrections, making it possible to improve performance further. Stray light control is very challenging for this mission. In many cases, ShadowCam can image shadowed areas with directly illuminated terrain in or near the field of view (FOV). We include thorough qualitative descriptions of circumstances under which lunar brightness levels far higher than the top of the dynamic range cause detector or stray light artifacts and the size and extent of the artifact signal under those circumstances.

  • In mountainous area with high relief, topography may cause cast shadows due to the blocking of direct solar radiation. Remote sensing images of these landscapes display reduced values of reflectance for shadowed areas compared to non-shadowed areas with similar surface cover characteristics. A variety of approaches are possible, though a common step in various active approaches is first to delineate the shadows using automated algorithm and digital surface model (or digital elevation model).
