The Study of the Recognition of Sexual Roles and the Demand of Sexual Education by the Korean Junior Students and their Parents (한국 청소년과 학부모의 성역할인지와 성교육요구에 관한 조사연구)

  • The study was attempted to survey the recognition of sexual roles and the demand of sexual education. The period was May 1st through June 15th, 1998 and the subjects were 377 junior students and 251 parents in Pusan. This study was based on questionnaire which focused on the Han and Lee's inquiry. The analysis of collected data was executed by using SPSS/PC+. The results were as follows : (1) The average point as to the 12 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the occupational functions by the boys was 2.92 which was higher than that of the girls(1.85). The average point as to the 14 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the attitudes by the boys was 2.91 which was higher than that of the girls(2.13). The average point as to the 14 items of recognition of sexual roles regarding the abilities by the boys was 2.93 which was higher than that of the girls(1.96). The point as to the item of androgyny among the demand of sexual education by the girls was 3.17 which is higher than that of the boys(2.93). (2) The parents showed the higher recognition toward androcentrism than the students and the parents showed the higher demand of the overall sexual education than the students. (3) 15.7% of the students was engaged in the masturbation. The students who answered that their parents had known the masturbation by their children were 16.9%. The 59 masturbaters consisted of the boys(91.5%) and the girls(8.5%), and that showed significant difference. (4) The opinions about the well-qualified teacher of sexual education by the subjects were studied as under: 16.7% of the parents supported the nurse-teacher, meanwhile 24.7% of the students supported the nurse-teacher.

  • The study was attempted and executed to reach the following conclusions. The period was May 1st through June 15th, 1998 and the subjects were 302 teachers consisting of School Nurses and general teachers in Pusan city. 1) The degrees of recognition of sexual roles by the subjects were compared as follows : The average point as to the recognition of sexual roles in the occupational functions by the school nurses was 2.41, higher than that of the general teachers. The average points as to the recognition of sexual roles in the attitudes by the school nurses was 2.28, higher than that of the general teachers. The average points as to the recognition of sexual roles in the abilitis was 2.26, higher than that of the general teachers. These ascertain that school nurses recognize the man has higher superities in the occupational functions, the attitudes and the abilities than the woman. 2) The degrees of demand of sexual education by the subjects were compared as follows : As to the degrees of demand of sexual education, the school nurses showed higher demand than the general teachers in the concepts such as 'the society and sexualities, physiology and actual education'. 3) The levels of the consciousness of sexual education by the subjects were compared as follows : the general teachers showed the more strict attitudes than the school nurses against the lascivious sex objects and wanted the punishment against the related students and the general teachers have myth. They claimed that their family have no relation with the sexual violence or pornography. As to the masturbation, the general teachers showed the more conservative attitudes. 4) The opinions by the subjects as to the well-qualified person in charge of sexual education in school were compared as follows : 77.3% of the school nurses, and 36.1% of the general teachers supported the school nurses.

Metro-sexual Consumption in Accordance with Identity of Gender Roles, Self-esteem and Cultural-Social Attitude Toward Appearance (성역할정체성, 자아존중감, 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도에 따른 메트로섹슈얼 소비)

  • This study conducted a survey with 300 male respondents in their 20s to 50s, in order to examine the influence of personal variables, identity of gender roles, self-esteem and social-cultural attitude towards appearance on metro-sexual consumption. The findings are as follows: First, the majority of respondents experienced metro-sexual consumption in passive ways, such as purchasing cosmetics or perfume. Second, self-esteem differed by classification of identity of gender roles and the self-esteem was the most highly rated in non-classified, followed by in femininity, masculinity and androgyny. On the other hand, the non-classified group appeared to have the most highly social and cultural attitude toward appearance. Lastly, when examining the effect of personal variables, identity of gender roles, self- esteem and social-cultural attitude toward appearance on metro-sexual consumption, the results showed that the younger respondents who spend the highest monthly expenses on appearance, belong to the androgynous group and have the social-cultural attitude, are more likely to have a greater tendency towards metro-sexual consumption.

Factors Affecting the Sexual Behavior of a College Students (일개 전문대학생들의 성 행동 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to configure a model geared toward predicting factors affecting the sexual behavior of college students and the path of their influence. The standardized path coefficients of factors that might affect their sexual behavior were calculated, and the total effects of the factors were checked when the path of their influence turned out significant. As for the path of the factors affecting the sexual behavior of college students in a firsthand manner, dating exerted a firsthand influence on sexual knowledge. That had the greatest total effect on sexual knowledge, and those with dating experiences had a better sexual knowledge. Sexual knowledge exercised a firsthand influence on sexual attitude, and that had the largest total effect on sexual attitude, as the students who had a better sexual knowledge took a more positive sexual attitude. Sexual roles affected sexual attitude and sexual behavior in a firsthand way, and sexual roles had the biggest total effect on sexual behavior. Androcentric and open sexual attitudes were permissive, distorted and led to more sexual behavior.

The experience of Long term Care Hospital Workers on Sexual Behaviors of the Elderly (노인 요양병원 종사자들의 노인 성행동 경험)

  • This study is an explorer study to investigate the experience of long term care hospital workers on the sexual behaviors of the elderly. The data were collected from August to October in 2019. The depth interview was implemented with using the semi structured questionnaires. The interview data collected from the participants were analyzed with using qualitative thematic analysis methods. The experience of long term care hospital workers regarding the elderly's sexual behaviors consisted of ten sub-categorized themes from the significant statements and was categorized into following four themes; 'Negative feelings related with elderlys' sexual behaviors', 'Difficulty of maintaining caring roles', 'Recognizing the absence of care for elderlys' sexual behavior', 'Accepting the therapeutic roles for elderlys' sexual behavior'. The findings could be the basic data for developing educational programs that help the long term care hospital workers understand the sexual behavior of the elderly.

Perceptional Difference of Sexual Image and Sexual Role between Male and Female Students in University, Korea (남녀 대학생의 성 이미지와 성 역할 인식의 차이)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptional difference of sexual image and sexual role between male and female students at the university level.. Questionnaires were collected from 418 students of H University in Kangwon-do, Korea from September to December 1999. The research tools were Sexual Image(Joo,1996, Cronbach's $\alpha$=.83) and Sexual Role (Chang,1989, Cronbach's $\alpha$=.93). Data were analyzed by SPSS-PC. The results of this study were as follows: According to factors of sexual image, the average score of sexual attitude was 3.06, that of sexual evaluation was 2.41, and that of sexual curiosity was 2.18, therefore university students had a high degree of curiosity but also had a relatively more exclusive image related to sexuality; there was a significant difference in sexual image between male and female students (t=10.99, p=0.010), male students were perceived to have a higher sexual curiosity and more positive sexual image than female students; the average score of sexual role was 2.21, that appeared to be a moderately progressive tendency; there was a significant difference in sexual role between male and female students (t=260.46, p=0.000), female students were apt to be more progressive in sexual role than male students. According to the above results, curriculum development and the application of at university would be necessary to develop and apply some liberal courses and workshop programs so that students and professors could prepare to identify ideal sexual roles and sexual images.

Analysis of Needs for Sexual Education in Primary School Children (초등학교 고학년 학생의 성교육 요구 내용 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and identify the higher-grade primary school children's needs for sexual education. We got the data with open question from 481 children from March to July 1999. We analyzed them according to the framework suggested by the Sex Information and Education Council of USA. The framework involves the six domains such as human development, relationship, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society & culture. In the analysis of need for sexual education according to domain, need for human development was highest (79.2 %), after that followed society & culture (8.3 %), sexual health (5.8%), sexual behavior (3.6%), and relationships (3.1%). There was no need for personal skills. By topics, there were needs for puberty (38.0%), reproduction (32.5%), gender roles (6.0%), body image (4.9%), sexual abuse (2.4%) and reproductive health (2.4%). Girls and boys all mostly wanted to know human development 41.0 % and 38.2 % each. Society & culture (3.4 %), sexual behaviour (2.7%), sexual health (2.6%), relationship (2.4%) were domains selected by boys. Girls wanted to know society & culture (4.9%) and 'sexual health (3.2%). Comparing by grade, fourth, fifth and sixth grade children are commonly interested in development, society & culture. Fourth grade children scarcely show attention on the relationship, sexual behaviour and sexual health; meanwhile sixth grade children would like to know sexual behaviour and sexual health. When their grade became higher, they would like to know more precise, concrete and deep information. We suggest that the textbook/guidebook for sexual health for the higher-grade primary school children should be developed considering the sex and grade.

A comparative study on sex-consciousness and sexual values between urban and rural elementary schoolers (도시와 농촌 초등학생의 성의식 및 성가치관에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the sex-consciousness and sexual values of school children by geographic region. It's specifically attempted to make a comparative analysis of sex-consciousness and sexual values between urban and rural elementary schoolers to help provide efficient sex education for them to build the right sexual values. The subjects in this study were 400 elementary schoolers in their sixth year of elementary schools located in Danyang-gun and Chungju city, north Chungcheong province. After a survey was conducted, answer sheets from 387 students that were analyzable were analyzed. For data handling, SPSS program was employed, and t-test was utilized to see if there's any differences between the urban and rural elementary school youngsters in sex consciousness and sexual values. And $x^2$ test was used to make a comparative analysis of their view of sex education. The findings of the study were as follows : First, regarding sex-consciousness, they had general knowledge on sex. Especially, they were highly aware of sexual violence and the generation of baby, but many of them didn't know about where and how egg cells were produced. This indicated that systematic education should be offered in various ways. Concerning geographic gap, there was a significant difference in sexual knowledge between the urban and rural students. As to sexual attitude, they took a relatively positive attitude toward display of affection or sex-related talk on TV or in movies, as they viewed it as natural. This finding implied that the elementary schoolers were recipient toward sex and took an active attitude toward sexual expressions. Concerning geographic gap, there was no difference between the rural and urban students. As for sexual practices, the largest group of the students had a liking for the opposite sex, which showed that their needs for sex were unveiled in the course of having some trouble due to the other sex rather than through firsthand experiences or activities. As to geographic gap, there was a significant difference between the urban and rural students in that regard. Besides, the urban students put their sex-consciousness in practice more often than the rural students did. After they are educated to build the right sexual values, systematic sex-education programs should also be offered for them to be exposed to sustained sex education and to team how to apply their sex-consciousness to real life. Second, as for sexual values, the school children had relatively positive and equalitarian sexual values. Regarding geographic gap, there were significant gaps between the two groups' view of the opposite sex, sexual roles and chastity. Concerning view of the opposite sex, they attached more importance to the inner aspects of the opposite sex than his or her look, and they wanted to date in a natural manner. Regarding sexual roles, they were relatively well cognizant of gender equity and the importance of male and female roles. As to view of chastity, they looked upon sex as natural, not as what's ugly or ashamed of. Third, concerning their outlook on sex education, approximately more than half the students felt the needs for sex education, and there was a significant difference between the urban and rural students. They wanted to receive education about the prevention of sexual violence and physical changes during puberty the most, and there was a significant gap between the urban and rural students in this aspect. As to the time for sex education, they thought that students should start to be exposed to sex education in their fifth or sixth year. This finding signified that fifth or sixth graders who were in the beginning of puberty started to have a lot of interest in their own physical changes. Therefore, sex education would produce better effects when it's provided to fifth or sixth graders. Nearly half them preferred single-gender class when they received sex education, and there's no gap between the urban and rural students in that regard.

Sexual Dimorphism on the Shell of Littorina brevicula (Philippi) (Gastropoda: Littorinidae)

  • Study on sexual dimorphism in Littorphism in Littorina brevicula should be interesting to examine that how the species prevent niche-overlap between the sexes? and how the species act differently in the reproductive roles of the sexes? Sexual dimorphism on the shell of L. brevicula was examined with 211 periwinkles larger than 5 mm shell length in Pusan, Korea. Sexual dimorphism was detected in the aperture length only. Aperture length of the female was longer than that of the male. A difference in the sexual role in the reproduction seems to be a probable explanation for the sexual dimorphism in the aperture length. The reproductive role of the male is to choose the best female and to transfer the sperm successfully by copulation, and the role of the female is to spawn their fertilised eggs into the seawater successfully. Perhaps females migrate to lower elevations on the shore than the males, so that they are submerged when they spawn. Because wave action at the lower area of the shore is stranger than that at the higher area on the shore, the females might need larger aperture size than the males to avoid dislodgement.

  • Rapid progress in epigenetic studies has resulted in genome wide information of genetic functions, other than DNA sequence information. However, insufficient understanding and unclear research direction in epigenetics has failed to attract many researchers. Here, we review the sexual reproduction processes that are particularly related to epigenetics in plants. We aim to elucidate the roles of epigenetic information and molecular mechanisms involved in the complex sexual reproduction process of plants, and examine their biological significance.
