  • Alan Goldman criticizes "means-end analyses" in that they define the concept of sexuality in terms of extrinsic values to sexuality, such as reproduction, love, and communication. And he claims that sexual desire in itself is only "desire for contact with another person's body and for the pleasure which such contact produces." I suggest that his analysis of sexuality also fails to offer the exact definition of sexuality, and that it also produces the hierarchial conception of sexuality just as those analyses that he refuses do. I agree to Christopher Hamilton's suggestion of Wittgenstein's idea of "family resemblance" and suggest a new sexual ethics focusing on the sexual autonomy. New sexual ethics demands that each person should formulate, reflect, evaluate, and revise his or her sexuality according to his or her own conception of sexuality and teleology. And I claim that new sexual ethics does not formulate distinct domain, but belongs to general ethics which general behaviors are judged through.

  • Purpose: The physical deficits after stroke have been well documented, but there is little information on the sexual functions of stroke patients. This study examined the associations of the general characteristics with the poststroke changes in sexual functions. Methods: A survey was conducted on 200 stroke patients from November 2008 to February 2009. Among the 200 submitted questionnaires, 147 responded, and the results were analyzed by SPSS for windows version 14.0. Results: A majority of the stroke patients reported a marked decline in all the measured sexual functions, i.e., frequency of sexual intercourse, frequency of kissing and romantic touching, thinking about sex with interest or desire, ability to become sexually aroused and the overall level of sexual satisfaction. Significant differences were observed in age (p<0.01), years since diagnosis (p<0.05), and educational level (p<0.01). There were no significant gender differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: Decreased sexual function is a common problem after stroke. These finding demonstrate a need to develop sexual adaptation programs that can be effective in improving the sexual functions reported by stroke patients.

  • Background: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and types of sexual problems of Turkish patients receiving gynecologic cancer treatment. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional convenience sample of 168 women completed the Index of Female Sexual Function (IFSF) and a Patient Identification Form in a hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Mean IFSF scores of the patients were low ($15.7{\pm}5.72$, out of a possible 45), indicating high rates of sexual problems. Results: Women frequently reported problems with dyspareunia (97.1%), vaginal dryness (97.6%), decreased sexual desire (91.1%), and difficulties of sexual arousal (92.9%) related with the cancer treatment process. They reported increased sexual problems following the period of treatment as compared to before treatment (p<0.05). Sexual dysfunction was associated with low educational and income levels, advanced age, TAH-BSO-LND surgery (total abdominal hysterectomy-bilateral salphingoopherectomylymph node dissection), experiencing side effects of chemotherapy, receiving chemotherapy in addition to surgery and radiotherapy (CT+RT+Surgery), and having a large number of chemotherapy cycles (p<0.05). Conclusions: Patients hoped for and expected counseling from healthcare professionals about their sexual functioning in relation to cancer treatments. Nurses and physicians can help to improve the overall quality of life for gynecologic cancer patients through sexual counseling.
