  • Effects of short-chain primary amines on Aspergillus nidulans development were analyzed. Propylamine induced asexual development and inhibited sexual development. Even on medium containing lactose as the sole carbon source, on which little conidial heads are formed and sexual structures are formed preferentially, or when sexual development was induced, propylamine induced asexual development and inhibited sexual development. These effects of propylamine seemed to be due to accumulation of mRNA of the brlA gene, which has been identified as a positive regulator of asexual development, and due to the reduction of the veA mRNA level. The veA gene has been identified as an activator of sexual development and also as an inhibitor of asexual development. Other primary amines, methylamine and ethylamine, showed identical effects on development where short-chain primary amino also promoted asexual development and inhibited sexual development.

  • The present study assessed children's perceptions of risk of sexual abuse before and after participation in a sexual abuse prevention program, and investigated the effects of the sexual abuse prevention program on the children's emotional response. The subjects for this study were 135 3rd and 145 6th graders, attending elementary school in Seoul. Instruments were the Sexual Abuse Situational Risk (Jacobs, Hashima, & Kenning, 1995) and the Children's Emotional Response Questionnaire (Garbarino, 1987). The results of this study were that (1) children's perceptions of the risk of sexual abuse by a stranger decreased, relative to those by familiar persons which increased after the program. Especially, 6th graders had higher perceptions of the likelihood of abuse by familiar persons than 3rd graders. Girls had higher perceptions of risk than boys. (2) Children perceived adults as more dangerous than adolescents both before-and after-program. (3) Children's perceptions of the risk of sexual abuse in public settings decreased, relative to perceptions of risk in private settings which increased after the program. Girls had higher perceptions of the liklihood of abuse in private settings than boys; no significant difference was found by grade. (4) Children's emotional response did not reveal a significant change between pretest and posttests.

The barriers to addressing patients' sexual health were moderate in these nurses with a mean score of 44.92 (SD=7.66) of a possible 12 to 60 range. There were significant correlations between gender role attitudes and barriers to addressing patients' sexual health (r= -.142, p= .007). Nurses with less traditional gender role attitudes felt more barriers to addressing patients' sexual health. Conclusion: This study demonstrates a need for educational programs that will improve the problem-solving abilities of nurses in a hospital environment and help them gain ground as sexual health specialists. • Objectives: The present study aimed to determine the barriers influencing the sexual conversation. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 200 midwives were selected through convenience sampling method from private and public clinics in Mashhad, North East of Iran. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect the study data. Results: The mean age of subjects was $39.58{\pm}8.12years$ with $13.49{\pm}7.59years$ of work experience. A number of cultural conditions act as an inhibitory force for the midwives to address sexual issues with menopausal women. Menopausal women visit a doctor at the acute stage when emotional and physical problems make sexual discussion difficult for the midwives (86.5%). Other related causes for not having proper sexual conversation were insufficient knowledge (51.4%), inadequate education provided via public media through health providers (83.5%), midwives or their patient's shame (51.5%), and attempt to get help from traditional healers, friends, relatives and supplicants instead of midwifery staff (78.5%). Also, we found that sexual workshops, communication workshops, and work experiences had a significant influence in changing the views of midwives. Conclusions: Cultural barriers prevent the patients and providers from communicating effectively with each other, thus highlighting the need for sexual and communication workshops for the health care providers.
