This study is selected two points of combined sewer that occurred Fish Kill after first flush, that analyzed generation of pollutants and stream runoff generation of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) as fine weather and rainfall. In addition, this study was to analyze the relationship between CSOs and sediments, to propose measures to reduce the sediment relevant with CSOs and rainfall runoff from entering sewage treatment plants and measures for discharged directly into streams when indicate relatively good water quality after overflow. Sediments in combined sewer system was discharged about 50~80% as overflows during rainfall and we can reduce the amount of the CSOs at least 50% or more if the sewer does not exist in the sediments because of the amount of discharge about the amount of intercept has been investigated by 3~5 times. Because of velocity at sediment interval in sewer is very low, sewage velocity of about 3~5 times as much as it can increase the amount of sediment can be reduced if the separation wall is installed. Effective control of BOD overflow load is respectively 77.5%, 75.8% at first point, second point by the separation wall is installed. Drainage area greater than area in this study or many combined sewer overflows region is increased the more effective control of separation wall. Turbidity to measure changes in water quality of overflows can be used as an factor to control the intercept flows because the intercept flows(3Q) after the first flush has lowered removal efficiency and increases the operational load of sewage treatment plants. Sewage water quality after a overflow when the reasonable turbidity was measured at this point flows to excluded intercept flow(1Q) can be discharged to stream.
The deposition of sewer solids during dry weather in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and to manage sewer systems efficiently, development of estimation equations for solid sediments In sewer systems is needed. However, estimation of solid sediments has performed using specific methods such as computer model before the development of estimation equations. In this study, solid sediments in sewer systems were estimated using MOUSE model for Gunja drainage basin in Korea and the estimated results were verified using estimation equations developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As results, the estimated values using MOUSE model are smaller than that of equations developed in 1977 but greater than that of equations developed in 1984. Although the comparison between simulated and measured solid deposition is difficult due to the absent of measurement data, the estimated values using MOUSE model is reliable and can be used to develop estimation equations for solid sediment in Gunja drainage basin.

This study is to evaluate the effects of the separation wall on the sediment quality and quantity in a combined sewer, by surveying the sewer overflow and sediments during a rainfall. Since the separation wall installed in the combined sewer separates the rainfall and the sewage, the flow rate of the sewage is increased, and the amount of the sediment deposited on the sewer is decreased. One sampling point was the outfall of Daesacheon with a separation wall, and the other was the outfall of Gwaryecheon without a separation wall, in Daejeon metropolitan city. The maximum control of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) overflow load was more than 38% in the Daesacheon point with the separation wall, during a rainfall of 0.11 mm/hr. The maximum control of the BOD overflow load was 24% in Gwaryecheon without a separation wall, during a rainfall of 1.0 mm/hr. According to the survey results of the sediment in the sewer, the discharged sediment deposited on the sewer in Gwaryecheon point was about 23% to 28% of the total suspended solid during the rainfall. In addition, the average velocity of sewage in the presence of sediment was about 0.30 m/s, and if the separation wall is installed, it was expected to be about 1.01 m/s, that is 3.4 times more than the same conditions, resulting in the reduction of the sediment deposit.
The pulverized wastes originated from kitchen garbage grinder cause an additional load in sewage treatment plant and water environment. Therefore, several problems occur in sewer, such as microbial corrosion, odor, psychoda and fly interrupting flow of sewage etc. by their precipitation with earth and sand. This study was conducted on two experiments: hydrogen sulfide gas generation from sediments in sewer and anaerobic batch test. In anaerobic batch test, gas generation was increased when organic compounds were increased in concentration. Sulfide was decreased upon decreasing in sulfate concentration. In $H_2S$ gas generation test along the depth of sediments there were two different sampling sites which are apart from about 50 cm each other in a menhole. The one has the thickness of 55 cm from the surface, the other, of 60 cm. The hydrogen sulfide gas production rates were measured based on ranges from 0 to 10 cm, 10 to 20 cm, 20 to 30 cm for two samples. The results obtained were 1.08, between 0 to 10 cm in depth for the sample thickness of 55 cm and 3.07, 5.36, $5.42{\mu}g/g-VS{\cdot}hr$ in order of depth for the sample thickness of 60 cm, respectively.

Odor emission from domestic sewer systems has become a serious environmental problem. An investigation on a sewer manhole revealed that anaerobic decay of sediment organic matters (SOMs) and related declines of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment layer were the main reason of the production of volatile sulfur compounds. In addition, as the anaerobic decaying period continued, the odor intensity rapidly increased with increasing concentrations of $H_2S$ and dimethyl sulfide. As a feasible method to control SOMs and to minimize odor emission potentials, an electrolytic oxidation process has been employed to the sediment sludge phase. In this study, voltages applied to the electrolytic oxidation process were varied as a main system parameter, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. At the applied voltages greater than 20 V, the system efficiently oxidized the organic matter, and the ORP in the sludge phase increased rapidly. As a consequence, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide was found to be >99% within 60 minutes of the electrolytic oxidation. Overall, the electrolytic oxidation process can be an alternative to control odor emission from sewer systems, and a threshold input energy needs to be determined to achieve effective operation of the process.
In order to find out the condition of flow in sewer pipes, this study investigated the characteristics of tractive force of sewage flow estimated using actual measured values of water level, velocity, and flowrate in sewers located at uppermost portion in a treatment area during dry weather periods. When the scene of sewage flow was taken by CCTV after cohesive and non-cohesive solids (tofu and sand) were put on the sewer invert, it was found that the solids could be flushed without significant interruption. In sewer with slope of 0.00319, the frequency exceeding the minimum tractive force of sewage during a weekday was zero, while it was 10 per day with slope of 0.00603. During the week of the field observation, the event to exceed the minimum tractive force occurred once, suggesting that sewer odor would potentially increase. Maximum tractive force in sewer with steep slope was 2.9-3.1 N/㎡, but with gentle slope it decreased to 1.6-1.7N/㎡. It was also observed that the interval of time maintained below the criterion of minimum tractive force increased, during weekends compared to weekdays and for the sewage including non-cohesive particles which could enter combined sewers during a storm period. This study found that the sewer sediments formed by direct feces input into sewers, through sewer pipes which were designed meeting the standard sewer design criteria, could be flushed without staying as deposited solids state for a long time.
If sewage flows for an extended time at low velocities, solids may be deposited in the sewer. Sufficient velocity or tractive force should be developed regularly to flush out any solids that may have been deposited during low flow periods. This study aims to evaluate the periods (T) during which sewage flow greater than the minimum tractive force maintains on a spot in sewer pipe system with lower tractive force or lower velocity than expected in the design step, when a storage tank installed in a place upsteam pours water into the sewer. The effect to T of design factors of storage tank and sewer pipes was evaluated assuming the uniform flow in sewers. When the area of orifice in the storage tank is $0.062m^2$(or 0.28 m diameter), the maximum T of 31sec was maintained using the usually used preset range of values of several design factors. As the horizontal cross section of storage tank and water depth of storage tank and roughness in sewers increase, T linearly increases. Also, T linearly decreases as the diameter of a sewer pipe increases. Although T gradually decreases as the sewer pipe slope decreases to around 0.005, T decreases sharply when the slope is less than 0.003.
The deposition of solids in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and proper pipe management, estimation of solid loads from sewer and surface in a drainage basin is needed but this task is very difficult and extremely expensive. In this study, generalized procedures for estimating sewer solid loads during dry weather in combined sewer systems and for estimating solid loads on surface in a drainage basin developed by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency were applied and analyzed in Gunja drainage basin in Korea. As result, the estimated solid loads from sewer and surface are 205.8,759kg/yr and 1,321,993kg/yr respectively, and total solid loads is 1,527,752kg/yr. The estimated solid removal from street cleaning, dredging from pipe system and pumping house is 1,486,636kg/yr. Therefore, the applied methods show resonable results. More reliable estimation can be achieved if long-term measurements and adjustment of estimation equations are carried out, and this estimation methods can be used usefully for the management of combined sewer system with reduction of cost and effort.
The deposition of sewer solids during dry weather in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. Sewer solid accumulations in drainage systems also create the 'first-flush' phenomena during wet weather runoff periods. In order to solve these problems, measurement of these loadings for a given sewer system for extended period is needed but this task is very difficult and extremely expensive. In this study, generalized procedures for estimating sewer sediment solid during dry weather in combined sewer systems developed by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency were applied in a drainage system in Korea. As result, the appropriate equation can be selected and applied according to the available data. However, the estimated solid sediment shows considerable difference between methods which classified by model and estimation methods of variable. The estimated values using equations (1) $\sim$ (4) are greater than that of equations (5) $\sim$ (9) and intermediate models show greater values than elaborate or simplest models. The comparison between simulated and measured solid deposition is difficult due to the absent of measurement data, but this estimation method can be used usefully for the management of sewer solid with reduction of cost and effort if the measurement is carried out and the equation is adjusted according to the actual drainage systems in Korea.
To perform long-term sewer monitoring, It is important to understand the nature of the wastewater flow that occurs at the point on early stage of the monitor and to prevent in advance a problem which may caused. We can infer the flow properties and external factors by analyzing the scatter graph obtained from the measured data flow rate monitoring data since an field external factor affecting the sewage flow is reflected in the flow rate monitoring data. In this study, Selecting the three points having various external factors, and we Inferred the sewer flow characteristics from depth-velocity scatter graph and determined the analysis equation for the dry-weather flow rate data. At the'point 1' expected non-pressure flow, we were able to see the drawdown effect caused by the free fall in the manhole section. At the'point 2', existed weir and sediments, there was backwater effect caused by them, and each of size calculated from the scatter graph analysis were 400 mm and 130 mm. At the'Point 3', there is specific flow pattern that is coming from flood wave propagation generated by the pump station at upstream. In common, adequate equations to explain the dry weather flow data are flume equation and modified manning equation(SS method), and the equations had compatibility for explaining the data because all of $R^2$ values are over 0.95.
