Simple Rumenotomy for Removing Foreign Bodies in Himalayan Tahrs (Hemitragus jemlahicus)

  • Seven male Himalayan tahrs were strongly assumed to have accidently fed on foreign bodies in 2007. At the time, zoo caretakers witnessed missing fence padding, such as carpet, plastic awning, and ropes. The incident occurred the morning after the items had been set up to protect indigenous, wild long-tailed gorals from self injury caused by head butting the steel fence. Adult male Himalayan tahrs were obviously suspected of mostly eating the paddings mainly composed of carpet, thin and long plastic awning, and ropes. Even though they had not shown digestive problems, surgery was determined necessary in order to remove any indigestible foreign bodies. Left flank rumenotomy was conducted on seven male Himalayan tahrs from April to May, 2011. After anesthesia with xylazine, rumenotomy was performed on a concrete floor, with legs and head secured by ropes. No access to water and hay prior to operation for two days was needed to make the surgical procedure done quickly. Two sheets of small hand towels protecting against inflow of ruminal contents were beneficial during surgery. Antibiotics were administered intramuscularly for seven days. No abscesses at the surgical site were found after surgery. Like domestic ruminants, wild ruminants also ingest metalic or non-metalic, indigestible foreign bodies by accident. Therefore, simplified rumenotomy must be developed to apply to those wild animals to lengthen their longevity and to advance the quality of life in captivity. This case report is the first showing how to perform rumenotomy of Himalayan tahr, a wild ruminant, in Korea.

Alteration of Biochemical Profiles after High-Dose Intravenous Immunoglobulin Administration in Kawasaki Disease (가와사끼병에서 고용량 정맥용 면역글로불린 투여 후 생화학 지표들의 변화)

  • Purpose : Intravenous immunoglobulin(IVIG) has been used as an immunomodulatory treatment for several immune-mediated diseases. The early effect of high-dose IVIG on biochemical profiles including lipids and proteins was evaluated in patients with Kawasaki disease(KD). Methods : Twelve children with KD(nine boys) were treated with IVIG of 2 g/kg over 12 hours. Serial sera were collected from the patients four times : before IVIG treatment and two hours, 24 hours and seven days after IVIG treatment. The samples were frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ before biochemical analysis. Results : A significant decrease in albumin concentration was found two hours h and 24 hours after IVIG treatment, but this recovered to the pretreatment level after seven days. Total cholesterol and triglyceride increased slightly after seven day. A significant decrease in HDL-cholesterol and C-reactive protein was seen two hours and 24 hours after IVIG treatment. Conclusion : High-dose IVIG affects immediate changes in protein profiles and HDL-cholesterol in KD. Changes in HDL-cholesterol induced by IVIG may be the result of changes in systemic protein metabolism.

Intestinal Perforations in Very Low Birth Weight Infants (극소 저출생체중아에서의 소장천공)

  • With the advances in neonatal intensive care, pediatric surgeons experience very low birth weight infants, weighing <1,500 g, more frequently. We report our 14 cases of very low birth weight infants with intestinal perforations without congenital causes, at the Asan Medical Center during the 11-year period from 1989 to 2000. The average birth weight was 919 g(563-1,490), and average gestational age was 206 days(161-286). There were nine males and five females, Operation was performed at an average age of 14.0 days(3-38). Ten neonates with symptomatic PDA were given indomethacin in an attempt to close the ductus. Bowel perforation involved the jejunum in two and ileum in twelve. At laparotomy, there were seven focal intestinal perforations, five typical NEC, one intussusception, and an unknown cause, Four neonates underwent resection and anastomosis of the bowel, and nine underwent exteriorization. One underwent resection and anastomosis after peritoneal drainage. Four patients had postoperative complications; two leakage of anastomosis, one stoma necrosis, and one internal herniation. Seven of fourteen patients survived(50.0 %). Seven patients died of septic complication. There was a significant difference in the birth weight and gestational age in survivors compared with those who died(p<0.05). There was an increased risk of bowel perforation in indomethacin treatment for PDA. Careful clinical observation and keen judgment are essential for this particular group of infants.

A Study on the Effect of Calcium-Chloride Content on the Strength of Mortar (염화(鹽化)칼슘의 함량(含量)이 Mortar의 강도(强度)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Compressive and tensile strengths of commonly being used mortar and mortar specially hardened by adding 1%, 2% and 3% of $CaCl_2$ were compared under the different mixing ratio of mortar and ages to investigate the effect of $CaCl_2$ which is being used as a promotor for coagulation and hardness, on the strength of mortar. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The compressive strength of mortar hardened by addition of $CaCl_2$ was higher than that of commonly being used mortar. The highest compressive strength of mortar was obtained when 2% of $CaCl_2$ were added. 2. The tensile strength of mortar, which was made by adding $CaCl_2$ and aged for seven days, was higher than that of commonly being used mortar. The highest tensile strength of mortar was obtained when 1% of $CaCl_2$ was added and aged for 28 days. And the tensile strength of mortar with 2% of $CaCl_2$ was lower than that of commonly being used mortar. 3. When the amount of $CaCl_2$ added was higher than 3%, the mortar was abruptly hardened and thereby occurred crack was considered lowering strength of mortar. 4. The rich mix was effective for the increasing the compressive and tensile strength before seven days of age and less effective after seven days of age. Therefore, the addition of one to two per cent of $CaCl_2$ would be effective for promoting initial strength of mortar during winter season.

  • Four-week toxicity of EPO(erythropoietin) was investigated using New Zealand White rabbits according to the established regulations of Korean National Institute of Safety Research. Rabbits were administered intravenously seven days per week for 28 days with dosage of 0, 80, 400 and 2000IU/kg B. W./day. Animals administered with EPO showed no significant changes of body weight, water consumption and feed consumption, and no clinical signs and death. They were not significantly different from the control group in hematological and serum biochemical analysis, urinalysis, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time. In this study, we concluded that EPO had no toxic effect in the New Zealand White rabbits when they were administered intravenously below 2000IU/ kg B.W./ day for 28 days.

On the Possible Function of Telfairia occidentalis Agglutinin in the Plant

  • The fate of Telfairia occidentalis seed Agglutinin, TOA, has been monitored during germination. While the level of the Agglutinin in the cotyledons decreased sharply in the first three days to about half of the initial level, it stabilises at this level for the following twelve days. In this interval, Agglutinin activity becomes manifest in the radicle on the fourth day, peaking on the fifth and decreasing rapidly thereafter. In the plumule, the lectin activity becomes manifest on the sixth day, peaks on the seventh and decreases rapidly thereafter. No lectin activity is detectable in any plant tissue including the rump of the cotyledons twenty-seven days after germination. The implications of these observations on the possible role of lectins in plants are discussed.

  • The effects of folic acid on the oral mucosa of albino rats were histochemically studied in the twenty four male rats, weighing abut 100gm. Seven groups of 3 each were injected with 0.2ml folic acid (folic acid 0.5mg. was dissolved in physiological saline 0.2ml) subcutaneously, during 1,2,3,5,7,10 and 14 days respectively. Oral mucosa of rats sere removed from upper molar region and fixed in 10% formalin, cold absolute alcohol, Carnoy's solution and acetone. The serial sections were histochemically stained by McManu's PAS reaction, Mowry's metachromasia, alloxan-Schiff reaction, and azo dye method for alkaline phosphatase. The comparative staining method was hematoxylin-eosin stain. The results were as follows: 1) Alkaline phosphatase reaction of stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum tended to increase after 7 and 10 days of folic acid administration. 2) PAS reactions of basement membrane and lamina propria increased after folic acid administration. 3) Metachromasia of stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum were slightly increased after 3,5 and 7days of folic acid administration and returned to the level of Control after 10 days. 4) In the oral mucosa, alloxan-Schiff reaction increased after 7 days of folic acid administration.

  • This study was carried out to investigate effects of sowing dates and method on major agronomic characteristics of Dendropanax morbifera $L_{EV}$. in southern area of Korea. The number of days from sowing to emergence was recognized liner negative correlation between sowing days. Dendropanax morbifera was sowed at seven different dates(from Dec.20 to Feb.20 at 30 days interval, from Mar, 1 to Apr. 15 at 15 days interval) in pot culture. In sowing date at Mar. 15, germination rate and early growth were good in pot. Dendropanax morbifera was sowed at five different dates(from Dec.20 to Apr.15 at 15 days interval) in field culture. In sowing date at Apr.15, germination rate and early growth were good in field culture.

  • This study was conducted to investigation into production of bile juice and bile powder by Chinese moon bear. The color of bile juice and bile powder were appeared to bronze and bronze or yellowlish brown. Average production of bile juice(ml) and bile powder(g) per head and the powdered rate(%) of bile juice were 98.4ml, 20.8g and 20.4% during a surgical operation. Production of bile juice(ml) and bile powder(g) per head were appeared to 120.7ml-139.5m1 and 8.5g-10.2g during experimental period(31 days), respectively. Average daily production of bile powder(g) per head and the collectting days of bile juice was decreased; to 6.7g and 52.5 day in summer compared with another season(10.3g and 60 days) The production of bile juice and bile powder was not difference between seven times collection in 7 days and once collection in 7 days.

Determination of Astaxanthin, $\alpha$-Tocopherol and TBARS in the Liver and Muscle of Rainbow Trout Supplemented with Red Yeast Containing Astaxanthin (Astaxanthin을 포함한 Red Yeast를 급여한 무지개 송어 간과 근육의 Astaxanthin, $\alpha$-Tocopherol 및 지질과산화물 함량)

  • The concentrations of astaxanthin and $\alpha$-tocopherol were measured from the muscle of the rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) that had been fed the red yeast(Phaffia rhodozyma) containing 0.2% astaxanthin for 7, 14 and 21 days. The effect of the astaxanthin supplementation for 21 days on peroxidation of liver and muscle lipids of the rainbow trouts was examined. The astaxanthin was found to be accumulated in the rainbow trout muscle when fed for 7 days with astaxanthin supplementation(80mg/kg diet) in the form of the red yeast and the content did not increase further when fed longer up to 21 days. Seven days supplementation of astaxanthin raised the rainbow trout muscle content of the astaxanthin to 17.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/g tissue from 11.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/g tissue in mature control group. Although the hepatic TBARS level was found to be significantly decreased, the astaxanthin supplementation did not alter the $\alpha$-tocopherol and TBARS contents of the rainbow trout muscle.
