Evaluation and modelling of the separation of anthracite in the hindered-settling column

  • This study was performed to develop the method for producing industrial coal sources by cleaning Korean anthracite. Laboratory hindered-settling separation column was set and three coal samples were used for tests. Tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of the major operating variables, teeter water flow rate and relative column pressure (set point). Additional tests were performed to elevate the yield and properties of the products using air bubble injecting process. In results, nice products were obtained with high teeter water flow rate and air bubble injection. Also, model of continuous hindered-settling separation process was established to assist the evaluation of the equipment and several operating variables, such as dispersion, teeter water flow rate, feeding rate, etc.

  • A sediments are Integral called as gravel, sand, clay, mineral materials which are settling in bottom layer of reservoir, stream, and oceans from land. In practical problems relations of sediments are flood by decreed of flow capacity and down of water quality. Dredged sediments are composed with constructed material and variety of pollutant compounds. Therefore, it is very much of cost effects in nationally, if development for use of constructed material separated only constructed material within sediments. And it will be continue to the dredge operation of stream sediment for retrofit of water environment and sustainable's after the years. The following results could be obtained : In case of high concentration sediments, sample for design of CDF was shown property of flocculent settling. Assuming that average inflow rate is 1, 000㎥/hr, mean residence time( $T_{d}$), average ponding depth( $H_{pd}$ ), and design surface area for flocculent settling( $A_{df}$ ) were 5 hr, 0.6m, and 15, 750 $m^2$ respectivelyrespectivelyy

  • In optical disk drives, a conventional control method in the presence of surface defect is holding the previous tracking control command. It is known that the method has a long settling time. This paper proposes a new control method which reduces the settling time. An optical head generally has coupled dynamics between focusing and tracking servo system. We present how to compensate the coupled dynamics so that reduced settling time is achieved. It is verified by experiments that the proposed method brings an improved performance in the presence of surface defect as well as in the normal operating condition.

  • Settling Basins are one of the most important and popular methods for removal of suspended sediments irrigation and drainage networks or power canals taking off from an alluvial river and wastewater treatment plant. Improving the performance and so increasing sediment removal efficiency of settling basins by an alternative method is necessary. In the present work, the effect of baffle and its angle of attack with the flow (${\theta}$) on the sediment removal efficiency is investigated by conducting a series of experiments on a straight canal with 8 m length, 0.3 m width and 0.5 m height and 3 m length of basin equipped with an adjustable glass baffle. A numerical analysis has been carried out using ANSYS Fluent 3D software (a general purpose computational fluid dynamics simulation tool) for three Froude numbers from the experiments. The numerical and experimental results were found to match reasonably well.

  • In the two-mass motor drive system driving a load through a flexible shaft or transmission system, a shaft torsional vibration is often generated. The overshoot of the motor drive system easily causes vibration. In this case I-PD controller has been generally used in speed control, because of the simplicity of structure. This paper using an analytical pole assignment design, proposes the overshoot formulas, and the settling time formula. The objective of this paper is to provide a design method of I-PD controller by using overshoot formulas, and settling time formula. The simulation results show that we can design the controller with desired overshoot and settling time.

  • 최근 Hard Disk Drive(HDD)는 컴퓨터 산업의 발달과 함께 멀티미디어 어플리케이션의 요구에 따라 대용량화 추세에 있다. 이러한 대용량 HDD 는 고밀도, 고정밀의 track 정보가 필요하게 되고, 이는 HDD 생산에 고속, 고정밀의 Servo Track Writer(STW)를 필요로 하게 되었다. 그러나, 기존의 STW 는 PID 제어기에 공진 모드 제거를 위한 notch filter 를 사용하기 때문에 고속화에는 한계가 있어 track 정보를 기록하는 생산시간의 단축이 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 이를 위하여 기존의 STW 에 공진 모드의 여기를 최소화하기 위해 제어 입력의 profile 을 설계하는데 convex optimization 을 이용한 최적화 기법을 사용하였다. 이렇게 설계된 제어 입력은 플랜트의 공진 모드가 존재하는 주파수 대역에 에너지를 최소화시켜 공진 모드의 영향을 적게 받는다. 그 결과로 빠른 settling time 과 위치 정밀도가 향상된다. 그 효과는 모의 실험을 통해 검증하였다.

A Study on the Characteristics of Deposition in Nakdong Estuary (낙동강 하구역의 퇴적특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nakdong estuary is located at south-eastern coast of the Korea. A lot of sediment from upper river was deposited at this area. It has caused many problems such as changes in topography and tidal current. In this paper, field observation data on tidal currents and sediments were investigated as well as historical topographic changes by dredging and reclamation of the foreshore. Then, the numerical model considered the settling velocity of the suspended solids according to the particle size was applied to examine the characteristic of deposition. The results are as follows : 1. Changes of characteristics of deposition were caused by topographic changes of Nakdong estuary 2. Characteristics of deposition were influenced by river plume and tidal currents. 3. Numerical model which considers settling velocity reappeared distribution of deposition by particle-size. 4. Used model is only resonable for discussion in the quality, so, it is strongly suggested that the new model development is needed including the quatitative deposition processes.

  • Most realistic control systems contain nonlinearities of some form. One nonlinearity commonly found in control systems is a saturating element. If integral control is applied to such a system to eliminate steady state error, an undesired side effect known as integrator windup may occur when lage setpoint changes are made. This effect leads to a characteristic step response with a large overshoot and a very high settling time. To avoid this situation, many different anti-windup strategies have been suggested. But existing strategies remain over shoot and high settling time. This paper proposes a new anti-windup strategy for PI speed controllers. When the speed control system is changed P controller to PI controller. Integrator has an appropriate initial value. This value results over shoot and high settling time. The SIMULINK/MATLAB-based comparative simulation results and experiment results of speed controller have shown its superior control performance to that of a proposed anti-windup speed controller.

  • The motion of small heavy particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence in the present of gravity is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) at moderate Reynolds number. The Lagrangian velocity and acceleration statistics of particles and of flow for a wide range of Stokes number, defined as the ratio of the particle response time to Kolmogorov time scale of turbulence, were obtained for the direction of the gravity and normal direction, respectively. It is found that particles lose their correction faster than the case without gravity. Then, a significant increase in the average settling velocity was observed for a certain range of Stokes number. Our focus is placed on gravitational effect on very small particles. Our simulations show that as the Stokes number reduces to zero, their mean settling velocity approaches the terminal velocity in still fluid.

  • The integral term of PID controller have the advantage of reduced steady state error and the disadvantage of accumulated errors. We proposed a method that maintains its advantage and improvs the disadvantage in transient response. The proposed PID control method with modified integral parameter accumulates errors in increment section and ignores errors in decrement section. Therefore, the proposed PID control method decreases overshoot, and makes settling time faster than conventional PID control method.
