  • With long time setting, zone 3 impedance relays are considered insensitive to power swings, and their operation condition during power swings is seldom analyzed. Instead of ti me-consuming simulation to the swing loci, their operation condition is directly quantified by polynominal functions in this paper to find the critical swing angle and frequency for relay operation under different relay settings and system parameters. It is found: (1) the swing loci are more densely populated inside than outside of the protection region, which corresponds to long residence time and possible relay operations; (2) the relays may be sensitive to load encroac hments and stable power swings with different relay settings and system parameters; (3) the critical swing frequency may be in the range of low-frequency power swings.

  • In this paper, we discuss the mesh segmentation problem which divides a given 3D mesh into several disjoint sets. To solve the problem, we propose a greedy method based on the merging priority metric defined for representing the geometric properties of meaningful parts. The proposed priority metric is a weighted function using five geometric parameters, those are, a distribution of Gaussian map, boundary path concavity, boundary path length, cardinality, and segmentation resolution. In special, we can control by setting up the weight values of the proposed geometric parameters to obtain visually better mesh segmentation. Finally, we carry out an experiment on several 3D mesh models using the proposed methods and visualize the results.

  • Operation conditions of a reheat cycle gas turbine for a combined cycle power plant was analyzed. Based on measured performance parameters of the gas turbine, a performance analysis program predicted component characteristic parameters such as compressor air flow, compressor efficiency, efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines, and coolant flows. The predicted air flow and its variation with the inlet guide vane setting were sufficiently accurate. The compressor running characteristic in terms of the relations between air flow, pressure ratio and efficiency was presented. The variations of the efficiencies of both the high and low pressure turbines were also presented. Almost constant flow functions of both turbines were predicted. The current methodology and obtained data can be utilized for performance diagnosis.

  • Equations of chordwise and flapwise bending motions for the vibration analysis of rotating pre-twisted blades having tapered cross section and orientation angle are derived by using hybrid deformation variable modeling. The two motions are couples to each other due to the pre-twisted angle of the beam cross section. The derived equations are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters on the modal characteristics of rotating pre-twisted blades having tapered cross section and orientation angle are investigated. The eigenvalue loci veering phenomena is also investigated and discussed in this work.

  • Downcoiler is one of the major facilities in hot strip mill operation. The key to good coiling is having good equipment, modem control systems, excellent maintenance and an understanding of coiling process. Therefore, this study aims to develop a program that is useful for calculating machine design parameters and simulating coiling process. In this study, the pinching and coiling mechanism of the downcoiler was thoroughly studied and some of operational factors and their effects on the coiling process were investigated. The software was developed to estimate engineering parameters for coiler component design and to determine optimal setting values for successful coiling operation. In order to check the accuracy and usefulness of the developed software, the simulation of the downcoiler in $\#2$ Hot Strip Mill in Pohang Works was performed. The simulation results suggested that the set-up value for unit tension could be lowered. Test coiling operation by using the lowered set-up value for unit tension resulted in much more successful coiling in the aspect of strip quality and power consumption.

  • In order to alleviate the environmental pressure caused by production process of thermal power plants, the application of cleaner production is imperative. To estimate the implementation effects of cleaner production in thermal plants and optimize the strategy duly, it is of great significance to take a comprehensive evaluation for sustainable development. In this paper, a hybrid model that integrated the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) algorithm optimized by grid search (GS) algorithm is proposed. Based on the establishment of the evaluation index system, AHP is employed to pre-process the data and GS is introduced to optimize the parameters in LSSVM, which can avoid the randomness and inaccuracy of parameters' setting. The results demonstrate that the combined model is able to be employed in the comprehensive evaluation of the cleaner production in the thermal power plants.

  • In this paper, we proposed a PID controller, which could control unknown plants using Artificial Neural Network(ANN) for auto-tuning of the PID parameters. In the proposed algorithm, the parameters of the controller were adjusted to reduce the error of the controlled plant. In this process, the sensitivity between input and output of the unknown plant was needed. So, in order to obtain this sensitivity, the ANN's learnig ability was used. Computer simualtions were performed for the regulation problems, and the results were compared with those of Ziegler-Nichols PID controller. As a result, it was shown that the proposed algorithm outperformed Ziegler-Nichols controller in rise time, overshoot, undershoot, and setting time.

  • Real-life time series characteristic data has significant amount of non-stationary components, especially periodic components in nature. Extracting such components has required many ad-hoc techniques with external parameters set by users in a case-by-case manner. In this study, we used Empirical Mode Decomposition Method from Hilbert-Huang Transform to extract them in a systematic manner with least number of ad-hoc parameters set by users. After the periodic components are removed, the remaining time-series data can be analyzed with traditional methods such as ARIMA model. Then we suggest a different way of setting control chart limits for characteristic data with periodic components in addition to ARIMA components.

  • This paper suggests a novel evaluation scheme of protective effectiveness in distribution systems. The adequacy of every parameter in a protective device is evaluated for the setting or correction rules. Then, the protective effectiveness of a device, device-wise effectiveness, is obtained by the combination of the parametric evaluation results. The coordination-wise effectiveness between devices can be calculated by evaluating the parameters which contribute the performance of coordination. The protective effectiveness of the whole system can be obtained by combining the device-wise and coordination-wise effectiveness values. The rules, in this paper, are categorized into three groups; rules for single parameter, rules for coordination between parameters, and rules for coordination between protective devices to form a hierarchical calculation model. The proposed method is applied to a typical distribution network to show its effectiveness.

  • Nowadays, one of the serious problems in the KEPCO system is a much higher fault current than the SCC (Short Circuit Capacity) of the circuit breaker. Since superconductivity technology has become more developed, the HTS-FCL (High Temperature Superconductor-Fault Current Limiter) may become an attractive alternative to solving the fault current problem. In order to achieve the best performance, the parameters of HTS-FCL should be designed optimally. Under this setting, this paper presents the optimal design method of parameters for resistive type HTS-FCL using the Monte Carlo technique.
