A method to design a robust servomechanism by continuously variable structure control is proposed. The state and control signal of this servomechanism do notchatter since a continuous control scheme is used. The input-output relation of this servomechanism is determined by prescribing a hyperplane in a state space of which the neighborhood is asymptotically attractive everywhere. This control mechanism was applied to a single rod cylinder servomechanism which has the nonlinerities due to their nonsymmetrical structure and its excellency was verified.
In this study two issues are considered, one is to develop a pneumatic servomechanism using a direct-connected circuit between inlet and outlet, the other is to design two kinds of advanced controllers such as fuzzy and PID controllers for a fingering system. Besides, the application of the advanced controllers to the newly proposed servomechanism is presented. The procedure of this study is composed of following 6 steps : [Step 1] Structuring of a control system; [Step 2] Development of a pneumatic circuit for the servomechanism ; [Step 3] Characteristic analysis of the valve and cylinder systems ; [Step 4] Determination of optimal parameters of the PID controller ; [Step 5] Design of a fuzzy controller and parameter tuning; and, [Step 6] Experimental analysis of fuzzy and PID controllers. Experimental results show that the newly proposed pneumatic servomechanism has good performance and, not only the performance of the fuzzy controller is better than that of the PID controller but also the fuzzy controller fits well to the control of the pneumatic servomechanism.
This paper proposes a systematic design methodology for high-speed/high-precision servomechanisms by using a disturbance observer. A multiplicative uncertainty model and a two degree-of-freedom controller composed of a disturbance observer (DOB) and a PD controller are considered as subsystems. Analysis of the system performance, such as internal stability and bandwidth of a servomechanism according to subsystem parameters is conducted for better understanding of the dynamic behavior and interactions among the subsystem parameters. Then, an integrated design methodology, where the interactions are considered simultaneously, is applied to design processes of the servomechanism. The tradeoff relationship between disturbance suppression and measurement noise rejection of the DOB is considered through the design process. Numerical case studies show the improved possibility to evaluate and optimize the dynamic motion performance of the servomechanism. Moreover, the disturbance observer designed based on the proposed design methodology yields excellent disturbance suppression performance.
The LQG/LTR method is applied to the real servomechanism with the unknown modeling error and system noise variance Q$_{2}$. The equivalent discretized LQG controller is implemented on the 16-bit microcomputer and the experimental results show the improved stability and the satisfactory performance when the noise variance Q$_{2}$ is increased infinitly.
Friction is a dominant nonlinear factor in servomechanisms, which seriously deteriorates system accuracy. A friction compensator is indispensable to fabricate high-performance servomechanisms. In order to compensate for the friction in the servomechanism, identification of the friction elements is required. To estimate the friction of the servomechanism, an accurate linear element model of the system is required first. Tn this paper, a nonlinear friction model, in which static, coulomb and viscous frictions as well as Stribeck effect are included, is identified through the describing function approximation of the nonlinear element. A nonlinear element composed of two relays is intentionally devised to induce various limit cycle conditions in the velocity control loop of the servomechanism. The friction coefficients are estimated from the intersection points of the linear and nonlinear elements in the complex plane. A Butterworth filter is added to the velocity control loop not only to meet the assumption of the harmonic balance method but also to improve the accuracy of the friction identification process. Validity of the proposed method is confirmed through numerical simulations and experiments. In addition, a model-based friction compensator is applied as a feedforward controller to compensate fur the nonlinear characteristics of the servomechanism and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed identification method.
Precision servomechanisms are widely used in machine tool, semiconductor and flat panel display industries. It is important to improve contouring accuracy in high-precision servomechanisms. In order to improve the contouring accuracy, cross-coupled control systems have been proposed. However, it is very difficult to select the controller parameters because cross-coupled control systems are multivariable, nonlinear and time-varying systems. In this paper, in order to improve contouring accuracy of a biaxial servomechanism, a cross-coupled controller is adopted and an optimal tuning procedure based on an integrated design concept is proposed. Strict mathematical modeling and identification process of a servomechanism are performed. An optimal tuning problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including the relevant controller parameters of the servomechanism. The objective of the optimal tuning procedure is to minimize both the contour error and the settling time while satisfying constraints such as the relative stability and maximum overshoot conditions, etc. The effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure is verified through experiments.
In controlling servomechanism, such as X-Y tables, friction is one of the most significant source of tracking error. Existing friction models work well when the direction of the motion does not change. However, when the direction of motion changes such as traversing a circular profile, relatively large tracking errors referred to as 'quadrant glitches' are introduced. In this paper, a new friction model, which has a term that can compensate the effect of the quadrant glitches, is proposed. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed model are evaluated through the experimental work. The results show that the controlling servomechanism with the proposed model completely remove the quadrant glitches.
In this paper, design of the regulator and model following is studied controller on servomechanism for discrete time system. The design of the servomechanism controller is studied on the method of mode1 following controller for the output of the process to follow the output of its model. Furthermore, a common approach to eliminate disturbance and steady-state error between the outputs of the process and its model is to introduce an integrator into the control loop itself. They are eliminated when we incorporate the integrator into the closed loop system.
This paper presents a robust motion tracking control of a cylinder-toggle servomechanism for injection molding machines. Virtual design model has been developed for a five-point type toggle mechanism. A sliding function is defined and combined with PID control to accommodate mismatches between the real plant and the linear model used. From tracking control simulations, it is shown that significant reduction in position tracking error is achieved with clamping force build-up through the use of proposed control scheme.
This paper presents the method of determining state feedback gains of XPTOS for disk drive servomechanism based BESSEL filter prototype. A typical disk drive actuator can be modeled as second order dynamics for low frequencies. However, the response at higher frequencies shows resonant behavior which cannot be easily modeled. XPTOS consists of the nonlinear control region and the linear control region. In the linear control region, the poles of a second order nominal model of plant must be properly relocated by pole placement technique to attenuate resonant modes at high frequency and to attain minimum time state transition. It is difficult to select position to satisfy this object because velocity feedback gain is subjected to position feedback gain in XPTOS. Here poles of BESSEL filter prototype are selected to determine state feedback gains of XPTOS. Simulation results for disk drive servomechanism using XPTOS having state feedback gains by the proposed method are presented.
