  • Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and flexible, and so have problems of vibration. In general, the serviceability of RC slabs was known to be good against vibration because of its hardness. However, recent high-rise apartment slabs are mostly light and long, the serviceability of RC slabs due to vibration could be a problem. In this paper, a basic investigation about vibration problems of RC slabs was performed. Basic information and its influence on vibrations of RC slabs were revealed. Also, its serviceability against vibration was examined. Many tests were conducted on existing building located in Chung-Nam area. As a results, damping ratio, natural frequency, acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude which were used to examine serviceability of the RC slabs were obtained. These results on the test building proved that its serviceability conditions were satisfied to meet the code against vibration.

  • This study was performed to propose the minimum thickness of RC slab that satisfies constructibility, fatigue safety, and serviceability requirements such as deflection control. Three different minimum thicknesses are calculated using concrete shear and rebar fatigue formulas, and deflection control, respectively, and checked by constructiblity. The maximum of these three minimum thicknesses is proposed as the minimum thickness of RC slab, which shows that the minimum thickness requirement of RC slab from Korean Bridge Design Code can be thinner than now.

  • Since bridge decks have many cyclic loadings by such as moving loads in a whole life, effects of cyclic loading as well as static loading should be considered. Particularly, in a view of serviceability and durability, structural performance by cyclic service loadings is very important. In this paper, experimental studies on flexural behavior of RC beams with new types of loop joints under cyclic loadings were conducted. Then the structural behavior for serviceability and strength were discussed.

  • Recently, in field of bridge construction, modular technology has been studied to reduce construction period, traffic impact and environmental impact. This study is a part of research related to the modular bridges. The aim of the study is to analyze the structural behavior and evaluate a serviceability for transverse connection of modular slab bridge. A total of four specimens were fabricated. including a control beam for finding the maximum load by static test. And one control beam and two segmental beams were fabricated for cyclic loading test. As the test result, the beams that were introduced 100% of the design prestressing force showed a smaller maximum deflection, residual deflection and crack width than the control beam. The beam for serviceability evaluation was satisfied with structural serviceability limits of the deflection and crack.

  • Serviceability of reinforced concrete building is affected dominantly by long term deflection of slab. And in case of reinforced concrete building with flat plate slab, severe long term deflection was expected because it has no beams which have large flexural stiffness. Therefore it is important to calculate exactly long term deflection of RC flat plate structure to assure its serviceability. However, current codes couldn't calculate exactly long term deflection of RC flat plate structure because they don't consider effects of boundary condition and construction load. By the way, recently the method to calculate long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was proposed by considering these effects. In the present study, long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was analyzed by comparing this method with recent experimental results. In conclusion, long term deflection of RC flat plate structure was affected considerably by effects of boundary condition, construction load and tensile strength of concrete. And recently proposed method considers these effects reasonably but it should be modified to reflect creep effect of RC flat plate slab reasonably.

  • In recent years, RC structures need reinforcement due to physical and chemical deterioration, reduction of serviceability and structural capacity. For reinforcement of RC structures, steel plate attachment, area increase and composite fiber sheet attachment methods are used, but there are some problems like weight increase, workability, quality control and fire resistance capacity. This study presents the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of RC beams using composite rods that are inserted in high strength special purposed polymer mortar.

  • For the design of flexural and shear crack control for reinforced concrete (RC) beams related to serviceability and reparability ensuring, eight simply-supported normal-strength reinforced concrete (NSRC) beam specimens are tested and the existing high-strength reinforced concrete (HSRC) experimental data are included in the investigation of this work. According to the investigation results of flexural and shear cracks, this works modifies the existing design formulas to determine the spacing of the tensile reinforcement for the flexural crack control of a HSRC/NSRC beam design. Additionally, for a specified shear crack width of 0.4 mm, the allowable stresses of the shear reinforcement are also identified. For the serviceability and reparability ensuring of HSRC/NSRC beams, this works proposes the relationship curves between the maximum flexural width and allowable stress of the tensile reinforcement, and the relationship curves between the shear crack width and allowable shear force that can be used to do the crack width control directly.
