  • Establishment of a diagnosing technology for the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures due to salt contamination is urgent, but few analytical methods based on measured data obtained from concrete structures have been presented so far. Chloride penetration into concrete from sea water is generally understood and analysed as diffusion of chloride ion. This paper presents a new method of predicting chloride penetration into concrete based on diffusion theory. Also, it determines the duralility of Marine structure in service with the prediction of remaiing lifetime by the carvonation test.

Service Oriented Self-Construction Network Scheme in IoT Environments (사물인터넷 환경에서 서비스 중심 자율-구성 네트워크 기법)

  • Recently, various researches have been studied to support service-oriented IoT networking. This is because the IoT environment coexists with various service devices for providing the service in a certain unified area. Thus, in this network environment, an effective data delivery service is not provided in a network configuration. Also, in order to provide efficient IoT services in this network environment, new scheme is necessary to recognize services by themselves and to construct network structures for each service. In this paper, we propose a service oriented self-constructive network (SO-SCN) scheme that can construct a service-oriented network in IoT environments composed of various service devices. The proposed scheme is a method that can minimize the network overhead required for service provisioning and extend the network lifetime. Through simulation, we show that the proposed service oriented self-construction network scheme improves the performance, in terms of the number of packets generated for end-to end data transmission and the end-to-end delay.

Rating and Lifetime Prediction of a Bridge with Maintenance (유지관리보수가 된 교량의 내하력평가 및 잔존수명 예측)

  • Bridges are rated at two levels by either Load Factor Design (LFD) or Allowable Stress Design (ASD). The lower level rating is called Inventory Rating and the upper level rating is called Operating Rating. To maintain bridges effectively, there is an urgent need to assess actual bridge loading carrying capacity and to predict their remaining life from a system reliability viewpoint. The lifetime functions are introduced and explained to predict the time-dependent failure probability. The bridge studied in this paper was built 30 years ago in rural area. For this bridge, the load test and rehabilitation were conducted. The time-dependent system failure probability is predicted with or without rehabilitation. As a case study, an optional rehabilitation is suggested, and fir this rehabilitation, load rating is computed and the time-dependent system failure probability is predicted. Based on rehabilitation costs and extended service lifes, the optimal rehabilitation is suggested.

  • Tendon corrosion reliability in KICT-ultra high performance concrete (K-UHPC) bridges is assessed and predicted considering uncertainties in flexural bending capacity and corrosion occurrence. In post-tensioning bridge systems, corrosion is a one of most critical failure mechanisms due to strength reduction by it. During the entire service life, those bridges may experience lifetime corrosion deterioration initiated and propagated in tendons which are embedded not only in normal concrete but also in K-UHPC. For this reason, the time-variant corrosion performance has to be assessed. In the absence of in-depth researches associated with K-UHPC tendon corrosion, a reliability-based prediction model is developed to evaluate lifetime corrosion performance of tendon in K-UHPC bridges. In 2015, KICT built a K-UHPC pilot bridge at 168/5~168/6 milestone on Yangon-Mandalay Expressway in Myanmar, by using locally produced tendons which post-tensioned in longitudinal and lateral ways of K-UHPC girders. For an illustrative purpose, this K-UHPC bridge is used to identify the time-variant corrosion performance.

Lifetime seismic performance assessment of high-rise steel-concrete composite frame with buckling-restrained braces under wind-induced fatigue

  • Under a severe environment of multiple hazards such as earthquakes and winds, the life-cycle performance of engineering structures may inevitably be deteriorated due to the fatigue effect caused by long-term exposure to wind loads, which would further increase the structural vulnerability to earthquakes. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the lifetime structural seismic performance under the effect of wind-induced fatigue considering different sources of uncertainties. The seismic behavior of a high-rise steel-concrete composite frame with buckling-restrained braces (FBRB) during its service life is systematically investigated using the proposed approach. Recorded field data for the wind hazard of Fuzhou, Fujian Province of China from Jan. 1, 1980 to Mar. 31, 2019 is collected, based on which the distribution of wind velocity is constructed by the Gumbel model after comparisons. The OpenSees platform is employed to establish the numerical model of the FBRB and conduct subsequent numerical computations. Allowed for the uncertainties caused by the wind generation and structural modeling, the final annual fatigue damage takes the average of 50 groups of simulations. The lifetime structural performance assessments, including static pushover analyses, nonlinear dynamic time history analyses and fragility analyses, are conducted on the time-dependent finite element (FE) models which are modified in lines with the material deterioration models. The results indicate that the structural performance tends to degrade over time under the effect of fatigue, while the influencing degree of fatigue varies with the duration time of fatigue process and seismic intensity. The impact of wind-induced fatigue on structural responses and fragilities are explicitly quantified and discussed in details.

The use of cost-benefit analysis in performance-based earthquake engineering of steel structures

  • It is of great importance to be able to evaluate different structural systems not only based on their seismic performance but also considering their lifetime service costs. Many structural systems exist that can meet the engineering requirements for different performance levels; therefore, these systems shall be selected based on their economic costs over time. In this paper, two structural systems, including special steel moment-resisting and the ordinary concentric braced frames, are considered, which are designed to meet the three performance levels: Immediate Occupancy (IO), Life Safety (LS), Collapse Prevention (CP). The seismic behavior of these two systems is studied under three strong ground motions (i.e., Tabas, Bam, Kajour earthquake records) using the Perform3D package, and the incurred damages to the studied systems are examined at two hazard levels. Economic analyses were performed to determine the most economical structural system to meet the specified performance level requirements, considering the initial cost and costs associated with damages of an earthquake that occurred during their lifetime. In essence, the economic lifetime study results show that the special moment-resisting frames at IO and LS performance levels are at least 20% more economical than braced frames. The result of the study for these building systems with different heights designed for different performance levels also shows it is more economical from the perspective of long-term ownership of the property to design for higher performance levels even though the initial construction cost is higher.

  • Aside from the issues like energy saving and maximizing network lifetime. WMSN has another issue to deal with: support of quality of service(QoS) which is required especially for handling real-time data such as object tracking and data gathering. This paper proposes a multipath routing algorithm considering the distance to sink node, energy level and link quality of neighbour nodes. Proposed algorithm supports multipath routing path with high quality links. Hence it helps to reduce a power consumption concentration that happens in particular set of nodes along the frequently selected route. It also specifies a service quality pattern and a service quality level depending on traffic pattern. By doing this, the proposed algorithm can realize a differentiated service with QoS guaranteed data transmission.

An Enhanced Transmission Mechanism for Supporting Quality of Service in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

  • Congestion occurring at wireless sensor networks(WSNs) causes packet delay and packet drop, which directly affects overall QoS(Quality of Service) parameters of network. Network congestion is critical when important data is to be transmitted through network. Thus, it is significantly important to effectively control the congestion. In this paper, new mechanism to guarantee reliable transmission for the important data is proposed by considering the importance of packet, configuring packet priority and utilizing the settings in routing process. Using this mechanism, network condition can be maintained without congestion in a way of making packet routed through various routes. Additionally, congestion control using packet service time, packet inter-arrival time and buffer utilization enables to reduce packet delay and prevent packet drop. Performance for the proposed mechanism was evaluated by simulation. The simulation results indicate that the proposed mechanism results to reduction of packet delay and produces positive influence in terms of packet loss rate and network lifetime. It implies that the proposed mechanism contributes to maintaining the network condition to be efficient.

Packet-Level Scheduling for Implant Communications Using Forward Error Correction in an Erasure Correction Mode for Reliable U-Healthcare Service

  • In u-healthcare services based on wireless body sensor networks, reliable connection is very important as many types of information, including vital signals, are transmitted through the networks. The transmit power requirements are very stringent in the case of in-body networks for implant communication. Furthermore, the wireless link in an in-body environment has a high degree of path loss (e.g., the path loss exponent is around 6.2 for deep tissue). Because of such inherently bad settings of the communication nodes, a multi-hop network topology is preferred in order to meet the transmit power requirements and to increase the battery lifetime of sensor nodes. This will ensure that the live body of a patient receiving the healthcare service has a reduced level of specific absorption ratio (SAR) when exposed to long-lasting radiation. We propose an efficientmethod for delivering delay-intolerant data packets over multiple hops. We consider forward error correction (FEC) in an erasure correction mode and develop a mathematical formulation for packet-level scheduling of delay-intolerant FEC packets over multiple hops. The proposed method can be used as a simple guideline for applications to setting up a topology for a medical body sensor network of each individual patient, which is connected to a remote server for u-healthcare service applications.

  • Recently there is a growing interest in mobile cellular network providing multimedia service. However, the link bandwidth of mobile cellular network is not sufficient enough to provide satisfactory services to users. To overcome this problem, an adaptive framework has been proposed. In this study, we propose a new method of estimating DPR(Degradation Period Ratio) in an adaptive multimedia network where the bandwidth of ongoing call can be dynamically adjusted during its lifetime. DPR is a QoS(Quality of Service) parameter which represents the ratio of allocated bandwidth below a pre-defined target to the whole service time of a call. We improve estimation method of DPR using DTMC(Discrete Time Markov Chain) model by calculate mean degradation period, degradation probability more precisely than in existing studies. Under Threshold CAC(Call Admission Control) algorithm, we present analytically how to guarantee QoS to users and illustrate the method by numerical examples. The proposed method is expected to be used as one of CAC schemes in guaranteeing predefined QoS level of DPR.
