  • This paper provides a fine-grained analysis of Korean serial verb constructions within the HPSG framework, and covers major descriptive characteristics of the phenomena. This paper discusses constraints on serial verb constructions in terms of four aspects; transitivity, argument structure, semantic properties, and complementizers. As a result, 17 constraints have been built, which support the type hierarchies for Korean serial verb constructions. This paper also presents a sample derivation on the basis of on the constraints and the type hierarchies.

  • Using good properties of an optimal normal basis of type I in a finite field ${\mathbb{F}}_{2^m}$, we present a design of a bit serial multiplier of Berlekamp type, which is very effective in computing $xy^2$. It is shown that our multiplier does not need a basis conversion process and a squaring operation is a simple permutation in our basis. Therefore our multiplier provides a fast and an efficient hardware architecture for a bit serial multiplication of two elements in ${\mathbb{F}}_{2^m}$.

  • We improved quench properties of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films by their serial and parallel combinations. The SFCL consisted of 6 switching elements fabricated of 4 inch-diameter YBCO thin films. The quench currents of the switching elements were distributed between 33.9 A and 35.6 A. Simple serial connection resulted in imbalanced power dissipation between switching elements even at the quench current difference of 0.6 A. On the other hand, $2{\times}2$ and $3{\times}2$ stack combinations produced simultaneous quenches. The $3{\times}2$ stack combination showed better simultaneous quench behavior than the $2{\times}2$ stacks. This is suggested to be because the currents between switching elements in parallel connection of the $3{\times}2$ stacks were more effectively redistributed than the $2{\times}2$ stacks.

  • E-textile technology has earned a great deal of interest in many fields; however, existing wearable network protocols are not optimized for use with conductive yarn. In this paper, some of the basic properties of conductive textiles and requirements on wearable personal area networks (PANs) are reviewed. Then, we present a wearable personal network (WPN), which is a four-layered wearable PAN using bus topology. We have designed the WPN to be a lightweight protocol to work with a variety of microcontrollers. The profile layer is provided to make the application development process easy. The data link layer exchanges frames in a master-slave manner in either the reliable or best-effort mode. The lower part of the data link layer and the physical layer of WPN are made of a fabric serial-bus interface which is capable of measuring bus signal properties and adapting to medium variation. After a formal verification of operation and performances of WPN, we implemented WPN communication modules (WCMs) on small flexible printed circuit boards. In order to demonstrate the behavior of our WPN on a textile, we designed a WPN tutorial shirt prototype using implemented WCMs and conductive yarn.

  • This paper considers a manufacturer with a two-station make-to-stock and make-to-order serial production system. The MTS facility produces a single type of component and provides components for the MTO facility that produces customized products. In addition to the internal demand from the MTO facility, the MTS facility faces demands from the spot market with the option of to accept or reject each incoming demand. This paper addresses a joint component inventory rationing and batch production control which maximizes the manufacturer's profit. Using the Markov decision process model, we investigate the structural properties of the optimal inventory rationing and batch production policy, and present two types of heuristics. We implement a numerical experiment to compare the performance of the optimal and heuristic policies and a simulation study to examine the impact of the stochastic process variability on the inventory rationing and batch production control.

  • In this paper, we investigate the problem of minimizing average inventory costs subject to a fill rate constraint in a two-stage serial inventory model with a normally distributed demand. Fill rate is the fraction of demand that is satisfied immediately from on-hand inventory. We first find the lower bounds of base-stock levels in each node by using the exact base-stock level that satisfies a fill rate in a single node model proposed by Sobel. And then, we extensively analyze the system and show that the cost function is convex. Using such convexity and some other useful properties, we can easily find optimal base-stock levels numerically.

  • We investigated the quench characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) depending on the methods of the serial and parallel connections between the superconducting elements. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of two coils. The primary coil is wound in parallel to the secondary coil through an iron core, and the secondary coil is connected to the superconducting elements in series and parallel. In this paper, the analyses of voltage, current, and resistance of the superconducting elements connected in serial and parallel were performed to increase the power capacity of the flux-lock type SFCL. A part of the superconducting elements was not quenched in $2{\times}2$ serial connection between the elements and then the power burden of the quenched elements was increased. However the elements with $2{\times}2$ parallel connection was all quenched. This means that the power burden of each superconducting element can be reduced under the same conditions. We found that $2{\times}2$ parallel connection was more profitable for the current limiting effects and the increase of the power capacity.

  • Stochastic manufacturing systems are generally formulated as performance models of discrete event systems. In this paper, logical models(as opposed to performance models) of kanban systems are presented which are deterministic and untimed but not stochastic and timed. As a result, the first and second order properties of kanban systems are showed which can be fruitfully applied to the analysis and design of kanban systems.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for improving the energy efficiency by considering the inertial properties of serial manipulators. This method employed is to put the inertia matrix, which has a critical effect on the equation of motion, into the constraints of the optimization problem. Through the optimization process, we propose a design algorithm that can double-check whether the optimized parameters satisfy the required performance or not by using an auxiliary index associated with the inertia and energy. Using this design algorithm, we were able to improve the energy efficiency by minimizing the torque. We applied this method to a 3 degrees of freedom serial manipulator and simulated it.
