  • For efficient transmission of 3DTV video signals, it is necessary to eliminate the inherent redundancy between the stereo image pairs. Though disparity estimation provides a powerful tool for eliminating the redundancy, it is very time consuming. This paper presents a novel disparity estimation scheme based on the human visual property. The disparity vectors of image blocks spatially adjacent to the current block are used as initial guesses fur the disparity vector of the current block. In addition, mixed-resolution coding is applied to reduce the computational complexity of disparity estimation. Through computer simulations on a stereoscopic sequence we show that the proposed method gives rise .to visually pleasing results with much reduced computational complexity.

  • The block matching algorithm for the motion estimation is relatively simple to implement, and thus widely applied in image sequence coding such as H.261, MPEG- I and MPEG-2. Most techniques of the block matching method use fixed-size blocks for the motion estimation. And their success relies on the assumption that the motion within each block is uniform. But if the block size is increased to reduce the number of motion vectors for high data compression, the estimated image brings about many errors. In this paper, the variable-sized blocks are used to solve this problem. And the top down method is used to select the block size.

  • The techniques for the estimation of motion vector from the image sequence assume implicitly that the intensity of image is constant through the time. But this assumption can be distored by such causes as the added noises and the sub-pel motion following the sampling, and the errors can be generated on the motion estimation by the change of intensity. In this paper, we analyzed theoretically the effect of the change of intensity by the noise on the motion estimation with the white Gaussian noise. We know a fact that the signal may be fluctuated to reduce the effect of the noise and so the sampling rate have to make down. Also we confirmed the theoretically analysis through the experiments which investigated the relation between the noises and the sampling rates.

  • A method is proposed for scheduling sensor accesses to the shared network in a networked control system. The proposed method determines the access order in which the sensors are granted medium access through minimization of the state estimation error covariance. Solving the problem by evaluating the error covariance for each possible ordered set of sensors is not practical for large systems. Therefore, a convex optimization problem is proposed, which yields approximate yet acceptable results. A state estimator is designed for the augmented system resulting from the incorporation of the optimally chosen communication sequence in the plant dynamics. A car suspension system simulation is conducted to test the proposed method. The results show promising improvement in the state estimation performance by reducing the estimation error norm compared to round-robin scheduling.

  • In this paper, we propose a maximum-likelihood estimation(MLE) method to obtain the location and the amplitude of the pulses in MPE( multi-pulse excitation)-LPC speech synthesis using multi-pulses as excitation source. This MLE method computes the value maximizing the likelihood function with respect to unknown parameters(amplitude and position of the pulses) for the observed data sequence. Thus in the case of overlapped pulses, the method is equivalent to Ozawa's crosscorrelation method, resulting in equal amount of computation and sound quality with the cross-correlation method. We show by computer simulation: the multi-pulses obtained by MLE method are(1) pseudo-periodic in pitch in the case of voicde sound, (2) the pulses are random for unvoiced sound, (3) the pulses change from random to periodic in the interval where the original speech signal changes from unvoiced to voiced. Short time power specta of original speech and syunthesized speech obtained by using multi-pulses as excitation source are quite similar to each other at the formants.

  • MASF is a kind of temporal filter proposed for noise reduction and temporal band limitation. MASF uses motion vectors to extract temporal information in spatial domain. Therefore, inaccurate motion information causes some distortions in MASF operation. Currently, bilinear interpolation after MBA(Block Matching Algorithm) is used for the motion estimation sheme of MASF. But, this method results in unreliable estimation when the object in image sequence has larger movement than the maximum displacement assumed in BMA or the input images are severely corrupted with noise. In order to solve this problem, we propose a hierarchical motion estimation algorithm for MASF. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces reliable output under large motion and noisy situations.

  • This paper investigates a new approach based on the fuzzy-logic controlled methodology that is suitable for analyzing and evaluating large format $LiMn_2O_4$ cell performance via online state-of-health (SOH) estimation for energy storage system (ESS) applications. First of all, the values of the cell resistance R and maximum cell capacity $Q_{max}$ are calculated from three factors such as voltage, current, and time that were measured by discharging/charging sequence. Then, using two values R and $Q_{max}$ previously calculated, present SOH of an arbitrary $LiMn_2O_4$ cell can be estimated using the defined fuzzy-logic inference system. The main advantage of this approach is wide parameters tuning possibility for good correspondence of SOH decay with other accurate estimation method and the possibility to perform suitable online SOH estimation.

  • The purpose of image sequence coding is to reduce the spatio-temporal redundancies. For the spatial redundancies, we can use the transform coding such as DCT. In this paper, the optical flow method is applied to solve the problem of temporal redundancies. There are several estimation methods like block matching method and pel-recursive method. Block matching method is easy for a hardware implementation because of the computational simplicity. So, it is now used as the estimation method in MPEG-l, MPEG-2, and H.261. We compared the merits and demerits of the optical flow method and the block matching method in this paper.

  • The optical flow theory can be utilized for automatically tracking and positioning homologous points in digital video (DV) image sequences. In this paper, the Lucas-Kanade optical flow estimation (LKOFE) method and the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) method are compared and analyzed using the DV image sequences acquired by our SONY DCRPC115 DV camera. Thus, an improved optical flow estimation procedure, called 'Iterated Optical Flow Estimation (IOFE)', is presented. Our test results show that the trackable range of 3${\sim}$4 pixels in the LKOFE procedure can be apparently enlarged to 30 pixels in the IOFE.

  • In this paper, a channel estimation scheme for high-speed Binary CDMA systems is proposed and its performances are investigated. In high-speed Binary CDMA which adopt high order modulations, since BER(bit error rate) performances are deteriorated when equalizer does not converge enough during preamble period it is preferred to set the optimum coefficients of equalizer through channel estimation. In this paper, taking notice of repetition of CAZAC sequence in preamble period, a channel estimation scheme is proposed, which can improve estimation performances with few complexity increase. From the simulation results, one can see that the proposed channel estimation scheme can be implemented simply with no performance deterioration compared to the conventional one.
