  • The sequential separation process, composed of an oxygen sparging process for separating lanthanides and a zone freezing process for separating Group I and II fission products, was evaluated and tested with a surrogate eutectic waste salt generated from pyroprocessing of used metal nuclear fuel. During the oxygen sparging process, the used lanthanide chlorides (Y, Ce, Pr and Nd) were converted into their sat-insoluble precipitates, over 99.5% at $800^{\circ}C$; however, Group I (Cs) and II (Sr) chlorides were not converted but remained within the eutectic salt bed. In the next process, zone freezing, both precipitation of lanthanide precipitates and concentration of Group I/II elements were preformed. The separation efficiency of Cs and Sr increased with a decrease in the crucible moving speed, and there was little effect of crucible moving speed on the separation efficiency of Cs and Sr in the range of a 3.7 - 4.8 mm/hr. When assuming a 60% eutectic salt reuse rate, over 90% separation efficiency of Cs and Sr is possible, but when increasing the eutectic salt reuse rate to 80%, a separation efficiency of about 82 - 86 % for Cs and Sr was estimated.

  • Waste plastics amount is more than 3.5 million tons and 30% of industrial waste in 1998, Korea but recycling rate of industrial waste plastics is quite low because the material separation technology from the mixed waste plastic powders is not commercially available so far. This study covers the triboelectrostatic separation of polyvinylchloride (PVC) materials collection chambers and controllers. PVC and PET powders can be imparted negative and positive surface charges, respectively, due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. The extract content and yield of PVC separation from the mixed PVC and PET plastic powders are 90.0% and 98.2%, respectively. The electrostatic separation system using the fluidized bed tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC materials from other mixed plastics.

  • This study was conducted in order to remove Poly vinyl chloride(PVC) from the waste plastic film mixture. The fittings of Air Table was modified to increase the separation efficiency of PVC and PE(poly ethylene). PE and PVC was successfully separated from PVC-PE film mixture with the yield of PE 90% or more and with his grade of 99% or more, using the improved Air Table.   • In this study, waste car tau lamps that usually gets incinerated or buried has been recovered during the dispose process in order to increase the recycling rate of waste cars and the material separation research was performed by applying triboelectrostatic separation method. After a series of charging characteristic test, PMMA materials was confirmed of being an effective charging material for waste car tail lamp material separation, a cyclone charger using PMMA material for continuous process was developed. In optimum test conditions using triboelectrostatic separator developed in this study, high quality PMMA material with recovery rate of 99.0% and 90.2% was achieved from the waste car tail lamp. Therefore, a material separation technology that can recycle tail lamps of waste cars has been established.

  • The characteristics of precipitation separation and solvent extraction separation of magnesium from the waste bittern were studied experimentally In the result of precipitation separation, the size of magnesium hydroxide precipitated was not affected on pH, but decreased with increasing the precipitation temperature. The purity of magnesium oxide precipitated was increased with pH beyond pH 11. From the solvent extraction separation, the equilibrium extraction ratio of magnesium was increased with pH and temperature of extraction phase, the concentration of stripping phase, and with decreasing pH of stripping phase. The extractant of Aliquat 336 and Acid 810 mixture was more effective than that of DCH18C6 and $D_2EHPA$ mixture in the extraction separation of magnesium.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope electrostatic separation system for recycling of mixed waste plastics. The electrostatic separation system is designed and investigated the separation efficiency for separating of mixed waste plastics. Electrostatic separation system consisted of a tribocharger, separator (two electrode), collector (5 tray) and controller (positive/negative high voltage power supply). The tribocharger is a fluidized bed using tribo-electrification mechanism between particles and particles. In experimental results, the tribocharger of the fluidized bed was more effective separation efficiency. It showed the purity of $85{\sim}99\;%$ and the recovery of $80{\sim}98\;%$ from the powder of mixed plastics such as LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, PET and PVC. Especially, In the separation experiment of Polyvinylchloride(PVC) which generates hazardous hydrogen chloride gas in case of the combustion. its purity was over 99 % and recovery was over 95 %.

  • In this study, we carried out the research on triboelectrostatic separation for materials separation of PET & Nylon recovered to waste plastic beer bottle. From the research on charging characteristic for choice of charging materials, it was found that PMMA was optimum charging material to make high charging amount with opposite polarity for PET & Nylon in waste plastic beer bottle. Therefore, we manufactured a charger of pipe line and cyclone type using PMMA material for separation of PET and Nylon. At optimum test conditions that used PMMA pipe line and cyclone charger developed in this study, we developed a triboelectrostatic separation technique that can separate PET plastic up to grade of 99.6% and recovery of 88.2%. We established new separation technology that can recycle the PET and Nylon recovered from waste plastic beer bottle.

  • The utilization of incineration ash from municipal waste must be promoted to solve the social problem on the shortage of final disposal site. In this research, metals should be recovered to avoid the damage of the crushing machine during the utilization of incineration ash in cement industry. In fact, incineration bottom ash from municipal waste contains iron in 3-5%. Nonferrous metal and stainless steel in 1% is also included. The research and development on the physical recovery process was performed not only to remove the metals but also to recover high grade products. Metals were separated from incineration ash in Maruya Co. Ltd.. In fact, iron scrap recovered by magnetic separation can be selled. After that, mixed metal was separated from incineration ash using screen. In this research, mixed metal tried to divided copper, aluminum, brass and stainless steel using drum type magnetic separation, eddy current separation and high magnetic separation. As a result, recovered iron had an 80% for the grade. Aluminum was recovered by eddy current separation without copper and brass.

Fabrication of Movable Separator for Site to Discharge Medium and Large-Scale Mixed Construction Waste from Agricultural Areas and Its Efficiency Evaluation (농촌지역 혼합건설폐기물의 중·소규모 배출현장용 이동식 분리선별기 제작 및 선별 효율 성능평가)

  • In this study, a real-sized experimental equipment (pilot plant) was built at the site based on the preliminary research data to develop a movable separator for the mixed construction waste that can be implemented in agricultural areas to review its feasibility through the evaluation of its separation efficiency by waste types. The final construction of the movable separator and experimental results of the separation efficiency are summarized as follows. 1) The separation performance according to the blade type was the best for the combustible wastes either with 26 numbers of L-type blades and 32 numbers of pin type blades. As far as combination of blade types, when the L-type and pin-type were combined, the best separation efficiency was achieved. 2) The separation efficiency for waste wood by the conveyor type and angle of inclination (slope) of the trommel was the best when the conveyor had ribs of seagull shape with the angle of inclination 45°. 3) The separation efficiencies by process showed that 65.9% was separated as inorganic demolition wastes, 18.2% as waste woods, and 16.0% as combustible wastes at conveyor speed of 2-3 rpm, and the error rate was the least from the waste types generated in the dismantle site.
