This is the research about a new method to make the internal separation layer with smallest pore size in polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by adding p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA) and polyvinylpyrolidone (PVP) to polymeric PES solution. The preparation and morphological characterization of PES sheet membranes containing PVP as a hydrophilic swelling material and TSA as a demixing material were performed. As a result by microflow porometery, the PVP and TSA added PES membranes showed good permeabilities and narrow pore size distributions, comparable to those of the commercial membranes. The concentration of PVP affected the PES characteristics on air permeability and surface structure. The concentration of TSA influenced on pore size distribution but do not affect air permeability. The surface images of FE-SEM shows similar pore size when TSA added or not. However, the cross-section images of FE-SEM show that the TSA added PES membranes have a increase of internal layer thickness with smallest pore size.
There are a few thousand abandoned metal mines in South Korea. The abandoned mines cause several environmental problems including releasing acid mine drainage (AMD), which contain a very high acidity and heavy metal ions such as Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As. Iron oxides can be formed from the AMD by increasing the solution pH and inducing precipitation. Current study focused on the formation of iron oxide in an AMD and used the oxide for adsorption of heavy metals. The heavy metal adsorbed iron oxide was separated with a superconducting magnet. The duration of iron oxide formation affected on the type of mineral and the degree of magnetization. The removal rate of heavy metal by the adsorption process with the formed iron oxide was highly dependent on the type of iron oxide and the solution pH. A high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system successfully separated the iron oxide and harmful heavy metals.
Several experiments have been done to investigate the removal of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) synthetic gas from biogas streams by means of chemical absorption and chemical reaction with 0.1-1 M Fe/EDTA solution. The roles of Fe/EDTA were studied to enhance the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide because of oxidizing by chelate. The motivation of this investigation is first to explore the feasibility of enhancing the toxic gas treatment in the biogas facility. The biogas purification strategy affords many advantages. For instance, the process can be performed under mild environmental conditions and at low temperature, and it removes hydrogen sulfide selectively. The end product of separation is elemental sulfur, which is a stable material that can be easily disposed with minor potential for further pollution. As the Fe-EDTA concentration increased, the conversion rate of hydrogen sulfide increased because of the high stability of Fe-EDTA complex. pH as an important environmental factor was 9.0 for the stability of chemical complex in the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide.

A new type of high frequency wideband ultrasonic transducer with a separation between a transmitter and a receiver was proposed and its characteristics were simulated using the PSpice model. The piezoelectric ceramic $PbTiO_{3}$ as a transmitter and the piezoelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) as a receiver were used for high sensitivity and wide bandwidth, respectively. The characteristics of a center frequency approximately 40MHz focusing transducer fabricated in this study showed very wide bandwidth which could give an axial spatial resolution better than 30um in the B-mode image for biological tissues.
Iron hydroxides are good adsorbents for uncomplexed metals, some metal-ligand complexes and many metal oxyanions. However, their adsorption properties of these precipitations are not fully exploited in wastewater treatment operations because of difficulties associated with their separation from the aqueous phase. This study describes experiments in which iron hydroxides were coated onto the surface of ordinary adsorbents(Sea sand) that are very resistant to acids, The coated adsorbents were used in adsorption of oxyanionic metals. The process was successful in removing some anions such as $SeO_3(-II)$ over a wide range of metal concentrations and sorption of oxyanionic metals increased with decreasing pH. Formation of two surface complexes for oxyanionic metals adsorption on iron hydroxides comprise (1) complexation of the free anion by a positively charged surface site, and (2) protonation of the adsorbed anion (or alternatively adsorption of a protonated form from solution) The coated adsorbents are inexpensive to prepare and could serve as the basis of a useful oxyanionic metal removal.

This study was performed to evaluate the co- and mutual separation for Am, Cm and RE elements from the simulated multi-component solution equivalent to real HLW level by a Zr-DEHPA(di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid containing Zirconium)/$NDD(n-dodecane)-HNO_3$ extraction system. Zr-DEHPA was self-synthesized and the optimal condition of (15g/L Zr-1M DEHPA)/NDD-1M $HNO_3$ was selected taking into consideration of prevention of the third phase, and effects of concentration of DEHPA, nitric acid and impregnant amount of Zr on the co-extraction of Am, Cm and RE. In that condition, the extraction yields were 81% (Am), 85% (Cm), more than 80% (RE elements), 98% (Mo), 85% (Fe), 98% (U), 73% (Np), and less than 5% (other elements) so that the system developed for the co-extraction of Am-Cm/RE was proved to be available. For that, however, U, Np, Mo and Fe was elucidated to have to be removed in advance, and Zr inducing the third phase formation was found to be practically excluded. The co-extracted Am-Cm/RE were sequentially separated in an order of Am-Cm (stripping agent : 0.05 M DTPA-1M Lactic acid of pH 3.6)${\rightarrow}RE$ (stripping agent : 5M $HNO_3$), and then their separation factors were evaluated. At above conditions, Am of 65.4%, Cm of 63.9%, RE (except for Y) of more than 85% were stripped.
The adsorption behavior of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) on Amberlite XAD-4 and-7 resins was investigated by measuring its distribution coefficients under various experimental conditions, such as shaking time, pH and concentration of methanol in the medium. The application of 8HQ-impregnated-XAD resins for the absorption and separation of metal ions was studied. The maximum adsorption of 8HQ on XAD resins was observed in the 30% methanol solution having pH range from 6.0 to 9.0. The impregnation capacities of XAD resins for 8HQ were 3.81${\times}$10-2mmol, 8HQ/g, XAD-4 resins and 2.60${\times}$10-2mmol, 8HQ/g, XAD-7 resin, respectively. The 8HQ-impregnated-XAD resins were stable in pH range from 6.0 to 10.0 and the amount of 8HQ leached from XAD-4 resin by eluting with hydrochloric acid(above 5M) was negligible. The optimum pH range for the adsorption of metal ions on 8HQ-impregnated XAD resin was also 6.0 to 10.0, and the adsorption mole ratio of metal ion to 8HQ were 1 : 2 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II), and 1 : 3 for Fe(III) at the above pH range. It was found that the absorbed metal ions on 8HQ-impregnated-XAD resins were recovered quantitatively with 5M HCl and 8HQ-impregnated-XAD-4 resin could be reusable over 5 times without decrease in its impregnation capacity.
In order to treat the wastewater containing organic compound, pre-treatment system connected with MSP(molecular separation process) was investigated. With the aim of selecting an optimum process of Fenton's oxidation, removal efficiency of each process in the optimum reaction condition was recommended. The $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$(ferric sulfate to hydrogen peroxide)reagent is referred to as the Fenton's regent, which produces hydroxyl radicals by the interaction of Fe with $H_{2}O_{2}$. The powerful oxidizing ability and extreme kinetic reactively of the hydroxyl radical was well established. Increasing dosage of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ increased removal efficiency as molar ratio of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ between 0.2 and 2.5. Optimum dosage of molar ratio was 1. The removal efficiency for reaction condition was increased as pH decreased when the molar ratio of $Fe/H_{2}O_{2}$ was 1.7. Fenton's oxidation was most efficient in the reaction time 35 min for complex wastewater. Also, coagulation aid experiments using kaolin resulted in 3% of kaolin dosage.
Crude invertase was obtained from the water extracts of Korean ginseng, Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, by fractionation with $0.8{\sim}1.0$ saturation of ammonium sulfate. The properties of the crude invertase were as follows: Crude invertase was stable in the pH range between 5 and 9, and at the temperature below $35^{\circ}C$. Crude invertase showed the optimum pH at 5.0 and the optimum temperature at $50^{\circ}C$. The activity of the crude invertase was inhibited by $Ag^{+}\;Mn^{+}\;Hg^{+}\;Zn^{+},\;and\;Rb^{+}$, while $Ca^{+}\;Cu^{+},\;and\;Fe^{3+}$ demonstrated remarkable increasing effects on the enzyme activity.
The quantitative separations of a mixture containing equal amounts of each cation such as Mn(Ⅱ), Cr(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), and Fe(Ⅲ) are carried out by the elution through $35cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of cation exchange resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$. The eluents are a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) for Fe(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ), and a mixture of 3 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 4.50) or a mixture of 0.7 M sodium chloride and 0.5 M sodium oxalate (pH = 4.50 and 5.00) for Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ). The subsidiary cations in a standard iron mixture such as V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) are separated together from the large amount of Fe(Ⅲ) through $15cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 1{\times}8$, by elution with the eluent of 4.0 M hydrochloric acid. A small amount of Fe(Ⅲ), however, is eluted together with Cu(Ⅱ). V(Ⅴ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) eluted together are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin,$Dowex 50w{\times}12$. Cu (Ⅱ) and a small amount of Fe(Ⅲ) are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$, by the elution with a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) as an eluent. By the conditions obtained in the separations of the standard iron mixture, Fe(Ⅲ) and all of the subsidiary cations in steel are quantitatively separated.
