In this study, a small portable sorting pilot for separation that can be used in dismantling construction site, which is the stage of construction waste generation, was developed, and its separation efficiency was evaluated to increase the actual recycling rate of the construction waste. The pilot was developed as portable sorting pilot for separation of 6 ton capacity that can handle one arm roll box within a $15m^2$ area in consideration of narrow places in the downtown area where a number of dismantling sites are located and various processes performed in the dismantling sites. In order to evaluate the efficiency performance of the developed device, the separation and sorting were carried out ten times with respect to trommel rotational speed RPM 2-3, 4-6 and 7-8. According to the results, the highest efficiency of about 90% was shown at RPM 6-7.

In this study, a small movable batch treatment system for dredging soil deposited in a rain water tube is proposed; further, a vacuum silo sorting separation device with a vacuum silo, first-stage sorting separator, and conveyor is designed. The vacuum silo sorting separation device also consists of a storage tank, transferring screw, vacuum gate, screen bar, screen bar cleaner, and vacuum discharging device. In view of the fact that the flow of drawn air in the storage tank is a major factor influencing the sorting separation performance, the optimum shape of the tank is determined by CFD flow analysis. In addition, by using CAE structure analysis, the safety of a storage tank made of boards is examined. The specifications of the vacuum silo sorting separation device are determined by conducting mechanical and dynamic simulations of the driving mechanism of the vacuum silo sorting separation device through 3D-CAD modeling. Following this study, we will design a drum-screen-type second sorter, a decanter-type dehydration device, and waste water tank and pump as a secondary device. Further, on the basis of this design, we will construct a prototype model and carry out a field test.
A high-throughput sorting (HTS) system has been designed to separate target particles using a negative dielectrophoretic (n-DEP) force. The system consists of a meso-sized channel and a cantilever-type electrode(CE) array designed to separate a large number of target particles by discerning subtle difference of weight and dielectric material property of the particles. Using the polystyrene beads with various sizes of 10, 25 and $50{\mu}m$, the developed system exhibits high-throughput sorting of about 200 beads/sec and more than 80 % of separation efficiency.

More than 50% of refractory materials generated from high-temperature melting furnace was not carbonized and could be recycled by adopting proper separation process. In the present work, the separation of refractory materials has studied by adopting color sorting technology to promote the recycling of waste refractory. Purity of the refractory materials was obtained with at 97.2%, color temperature of sorter light source 6,500K, which gives less interference of surrounding light source. Purity and separation efficiency were improved as size is setting bigger and lower conveyer belt speed. It is revealed that optimum conditions were color temperature 6,500K, conveyer belt speed 1,000 mm/sec, particle size -20 mm, etc. To improve purity and separation efficiency on below 10mm size, the resolution of should be fixed camera and it narrow recognition range. As a result of the study, color sorting technology could be used for separation of waste refractory materials and will contribute to promote the waste recycling.
In this study, a scrap sorting system using a color recognition method has been developed to automatically sort out specified materials from a mixture, and its application as been examined in the separation of Cu and other non-ferrous metal parts from a mixture of iron scraps. The system is composed of three parts; measuring, conveying and ejecting parts. The color of scrap surface is recognized by the measuring part consisting of a line-scan camera, light sources and a frame grabber. The recognition is program-controlled by a image processing algorithms, and thus only the scrap part of designated color is separated by the use of air nozzles. In addition, the light system is designed to meet a high speed of sorting process with a frequency-variable inverter and the air nozzled ejectors are to be operated by an I/O interface communication with a hardware controller. In the functional tests of the system, its efficiency in the recognition of Cu scraps from its mixture with Fe ones reaches to more than 90%, and that in the separation more than 80% at a conveying speed of 25 m/min. Therefore, it is expected that the system can be commercialized in the industry of shredder makers if a high efficiency ejecting system is realized.

Used small household appliances(small e-waste) consists of a variety of complex materials and components. The small e-waste is mainly composed of plastics and an important potential source of waste plastic. The black plastics, particularly are very difficult to separate by resin type and therefore these are mainly recycled in the form of a mixtures. In the present study, the sorting technologies such as gravity and electro static separation, near-infrared ray(NIR) and IR/Raman optical sorting separation on mixture of black plastics were analyzed and their limitations on sorting process were also investigated. The Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS) spectrum of each black plastics was used for identification of black plastics by resin type, and after analyzing the normalization operation, Principal Component Analysis(PCA) was carried out. The spectrum data was optimized through PCA process. In order to improve the identification accuracy and sorting efficiency of black plastics, it is necessary to design a classifier with high efficiency and to improve the performance and reliability of the classifier by applying the field of intelligent algorithms.

This study is aimed to prepare the effective detail survey methods(Phase II) of abandoned metal mines through the contamination assessment for mine types and facilities in the abandoned metal mine areas. The study sites of 12 abandoned mines are located in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do and those were chosen among 310 sites that the Phase II survey was conducted from 2007 to 2009 after considering the results of Phase I for abandoned mines scattered all over the country. 12 study sites were classified into four types; Type I sites only have pit mouth. Type II sites have pit mouth and mine-waste field. Type III sites have pit mouth and tailing sorting field. Type IV sites have pit mouth, tailing sorting field and concentrator(s). In forest land, paddy soil and farm land of Type I, As and Cd were showed average concentration, and Cu and Pb were high on the pit mouth area in one mines where the pit mouth was developed within 500 m. In the mines of Type II, Cu and Pb were showed average concentration too, but As and Cd were slightly high in pit mouth and mine-waste field. The mines of Type III which had grinding particle process through physical separation milling or hitting showed similar tendency with Type II. However, mines of Type IV pit mouth, mine-waste field and showed various results depending on defining the contamination sources. For example, if contamination source was pit mouth, the mixed results of Type I, II, II were showed. In tailing sorting field which was regarded as the most important source and having high mobility, however, if there were no facilities or it was difficult to access directly, field sampling was missed occasionally during phase I and phase II survey. For that reason, the assessment for tailing sorting field is missed and it leads to completely different results. In the areas of Type I mines, the concentration of heavy metals exceeded precautionary standards of soil contamination or not within 1,000 meters of pit mouth. Nickel(Ni) was the largest factor of the heavy metal contamination in this type. The heavy metals except Arsenic(As) were shown high levels of concentration in Type II areas, where pit mouth and mine-waste field were operated for making powder in upriver region; therefore, to the areas in the vicinity of midstream and downstream, the high content of heavy metals were shown. The tendency of high level of heavy metals and toxic materials contained in flotation agent used during sorting process were found in soil around sorting and tailing field. In the abandoned-pit-mouth area, drygrinding area and tailing sorting field area, the content of Cupper(Cu) and Zinc(Zn) were higher than other areas. Also, the contaminated area were larger than mine reclamation area(2,000 m) and the location of tailing sorting field was one of the important factors to estimate contaminated area.
The objective of this research is to evaluate optimal conditions of permeability and selectivity on the polysulfone membrane for efficiency of separation of $CH_4$ by checking four factors which are temperature, pressure, gas compositions and gas flow rates. When higher pressure was applied at the input, lower efficiency of recovery of $CH_4$ and higher efficiency of separation of $CH_4$ were shown. It has the tendency to show lower efficiency of recovery of $CH_4$ and higher efficiency of separation of $CH_4$ at the output as higher temperature at input. The lower flow rates make higher efficiency of recovery of $CH_4$ and lower efficiency of separation of $CH_4$. Finally, over 90% efficiency for $CH_4$ separation and recovery conditions are temperature ($-5^{\circ}C$), pressure (8 bar), gas composition rate (6:4) ($CH_4:CO_2$) and gas flow rate ($5\ell$/min). These conditions make higher separation and recovery efficiency such as 90.1% and 92.1%, respectively.
The laboratory animal group separation is dividing animal population into subgroups, which have similar average and standard deviation values among the subgroups, based on the biological characteristics such as body weight, glucose level in blood, etc. Although group separation is very important and initial step in experimental design, it needs a labor intensive process for researchers because of making similar average and standard deviation values among the subgroups using the raw biological characteristics. To reduce the labor cost and increase the efficiency of animal grouping, we developed a web program named as laboratory animal group separation (LAGS) program. This LAGS uses biological characteristics of population, number of group, and the number of elements per each subgroup as input data. The LAGS automatically separates the population into each subgroup that has similar statistical data such as average and standard deviation values among subgroups. It also provides researchers with the extraordinary data generated in the process of grouping and the final grouping results by graphical display. Through our LAGS, researchers can validate and confirm results of laboratory animal group separation by just a few mouse clicks.
