A numerical study of the unsteady flow in an over-expanded thrust optimized contour and compressed truncated perfect rocket nozzle is carried out in present paper. These rocket nozzles are subject to flow separation in transient phase at engine start-up and/or engine shut-down. The separation flow structures at different pressure ratios are observed. The start-up process exhibits two different shock structures such as FSS (Free Shock Separation) and RSS (Restricted Shock Separation). For a range of pressure ratios, hysteresis phenomenon occurs between these two separation patterns. A three-dimension compressible Navier-Stokes solver is used for the present study. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. The computed nozzle wall pressures show a good agreement with the experimental measurements. Present results have shown that present code can be used for the analysis of the transient flows in nozzle.

The shock separation test simulates the environmental effects of the spacecraft separation from launch vehicle. The shock separation test for a structural model of KOMPSAT-Ⅱ(Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite Ⅱ) was performed in SITC(Satellite Integration & Test Center) launch environmental test hall at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) to verify the shock test requirement of the spacecraft, to predict the induced acceleration responses on the primary structures and payloads by the explosion of pyre-lock and to perform mechanical fit check. The spacecraft with S/A was mated vertically to LV(Launch Vehicle) adapter simulator via a clamp band, then hoisted and suspended above a foam test bed by four isolation springs secured to the spacecraft hoist fittings to isolate the payload platform shock wave from the sling elements. For separation process, real pyre-devices were used and the time response signals from 60 accelerometers installed on the interested points was acquired and recorded. The SRS responses for each response channels were calculated and the achieved SRS's on the separation plane was reviewed and evaluated in comparison to the ICD(Interface Control Document) value.

This paper is investigates the separation shock of payload fairing. Separation test of subscale PLF using half separation device and half PLA is performed. Resulting shock loads at equipment bay and fairing joint are measured. Pyroshock estimation is performed using AUTOSEA Pyroshock Module. Input data to analysis model is obtained from the separation test results of subscale PLF. And model of AUTOSEA is updated comparing results between tests and analysis.. This enables us to validate the AUTOSEA model. Tuned model of subscale PLF and separation device is used to update full scale model, and the shock analysis result of full scale model is estimated in this paper. This paper also discusses the results regarding the difficulty of structural modeling and its numerical implementation in AutoSEA2 Software.

Highly over-expanded nozzle of the rocket engines will be excited by non-axial forces due to flow separation at sea level operations. Since rocket engines are designed to produce axial thrust to power the vehicle, non-axial static and/or dynamic forces are not desirable. Several engine failures were attributed to the side loads. Present work investigate the unsteady flow in an over-expanded rocket nozzle in order to estimate side load during a shutdown/starting. Numerical computations has been carried out with density based solver on multi-block structured grid. Present solver is explicit in time and unsteady time step is calculated using dual time step approach. AUSMDV is considered as a numerical scheme for the flux calculations. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. Results presented here is for two nozzle pressure ratio i.e. 100 and 20. At 100 NPR, restricted shock separation (RSS) pattern is observed while, 20 NPR shows free shock separation (FSS) pattern. Side load is observed during the transition of separation pattern at different NPR.

The present work has been developed the study of interpretation of separation behavior in gas expansion separation(GES) bolt which has the separation characteristics without fragmentation and minimum pyre-shock during the operation of the explosive bolt. In order to obtain the performance of minimum pyre-shock, the present work used non-compressive material instead of separation explosives. The use of the interpretation processor could be extensively helped to design the shape and the amount of explosives in the explosive bolt having complex geometry, and to analyse the separation behavior during the operation. It is also proved that the GES bolt is the most suitable the separation system necessary to minimum pyre-shock and non fragmentation compare with others.

Pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is characterized as a transient vibration phenomena which shows large acceleration and high frequency range up to 10kHz during the operation of separation devices where explosives are used. During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyro-shock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, characteristics of pyroshock are introduced briefly, and PEEK washer shock absorber is applied for the reduction of pyroshock in the high frequency range. With some electronic devices, reduction characteristic of pyroshock using washer type shock absorber are studied. Random vibration tests are also performed for the verification of vibrational characteristics.

A shock-wave in a supersonic flow can be theoretically determined by a given pressure ratio at upstream and downstream flowfields, and then the obtained shock-wave is stable in its position. Under the practical situation in which the shock-wave interacts with the boundary layer along a solid wall, it cannot, however, be stable even for the given pressure ratio being independent of time and oscillates around a time-mean position. In the present study, oscillations of a weak normal shock-wave in a supersonic diffuser were measured by a Line Image Sensor(LIS), and they were compared with the data of the wall pressure fluctuations at the foot of the shock-wave interacting with the wall boundary layer. LIS was incorporated into a conventional schlieren optical system and its signal, instantaneous displacement of the interacting shock-wave, was analyzed by a statistical method. The results show that the displacement of an oscillating shock-wave increase with the upstream Mach number and the dominant frequency components of the oscillating shock-wave are below 200 Hz. Measurements indicated that shock-wave oscillations may not entirely be caused by the boundary layer separation. The statistical properties of oscillations appeared, however, to be significantly affected by shock-induced separation of turbulent boundary layer.
A numerical model is constructed to simulate the interactions of oblique shock wave / turbulent boundary layer on a strongly heated wall. The heated wall temperature is two times higher than the adiabatic wall temperature and the shock wave is strong enough to induce boundary layer separation. The numerical diffusion in the finite volume method is reduced by the use of a higher order convection scheme(UMIST scheme) which is a TVD version of QUICK scheme. The turbulence model is Chen-Kim two time scale model. The comparison of the wall pressure distribution with the experimental data ensures the validity of this numerical model. The effect of strong wall heating enlarges the separation region upstream and downstream. In order to eliminate the separation, wall suction is applied at the shock foot position. The bleeding slot width is about same as the upstream boundary layer thickness and suction mass flow is 10% of the flow rate in the upstream boundary layer. The final configuration of the shock reflection pattern and the wall pressure distribution approach to the non-viscous value when wall suction is applied.
The interaction patterns between shock wave and boundary layer in a rocket nozzle are mainly classified into two categories, FSS(Free Shock Separation) and RSS(Restricted Shock Separation), both of which are associated with the thrust characteristics as well as side loads of the engine. According to the previous investigations, strong side loads of the engine are produced during the period of transition from FSS to RSS or vice versa. The present work aims at investigating the unsteady behavior of the separation shock waves in a two-dimensional supersonic nozzle, using experimental method and CFD. Schlieren optical method was employed to visualize the time-mean and time-dependent shock motions in the nozzle. The unsteady, compressible N-S equations with SST K-$\omega$ turbulence closure were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The results obtained show the separation shock motions during the transition of the interaction pattern.

The COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is subjected to shock loads when the stage or fairing of a launch vehicle is separated and the satellite is separated from the launch vehicle during the launch vehicle flight. And, after the satellite is separated from the launcher, the COMS is subjected to shock loads when the solar array is deployed, Ka-Band communication antenna is deployed, and meteorological imager radiator cover is released. In order to validate the satellite safety against these shock loads on ground, shock tests were performed. In this paper, the shock tests performed in the course of the COMS development are described, and the method to assess the test result is presented with an example of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI). In Ariane-5 launch vehicle, the clampband release shock for satellite separation is lower than the fairing or stage separation. In this paper, the extrapolation method to take into account the maximum shock load from the launch vehicle by using the satellite separation shock test result is also introduced.
