  • An electrical cascade impactor is a multistage impaction device to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes using electrical method. We designed a real-time three-stage electrical low-pressure impactor, which is proper to nanometer sized environmental aerosols. Performance evaluation was carried out for stage 1 and 2. The monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were generated using condensation-evaporation followed by electrostatic classification using DMA (differential mobility analizer) for particles with diameters in the range of $0.04{\sim}0.8{\mu}m$. The evaluation of the electrical impactor is based on the use of two electrometers, one connected to the impaction plate of the impactor, and the other to the faraday cage as backup filter. The results showed that the experimental 50% cutoff diameters in the operation pressure were 0.53 and $0.12{\mu}m$ for stage 1 and stage 2. The effect of operation pressure on the cutoff diameter and the steepness of collection effcieicy curves is investigated.

  • A particle trajectory model to simulate two-phase particle-laden crossjets into two-dimensional horizontal free stream has been developed to study the variations of the jet trajectories and velocity variations of the gaseous and the particulate phases. The following conclusions may be drawn from the predicted results, which are in agreement with experimental observations. The penetration of the two-phase jet in a crossflow is greater than that of the single-phase jet. The penetration of particles into the free stream increases with increasing particle size, solids-gas loading ratio and carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio at the jet exit. When the particle size is large, the solid particles separate from the carrier gas , while the particles are completely suspended in the carrier gas for the case of small size particles. As the particle to carrier gas velocity ratio at the jet exit is less than unity, the particles in the vicinity of the jet exit are accelerated by the carrier gas. As the injection angle is increased, the difference of the particle trajectory from that of the pure gas becomes larger. Therefore, it can be concluded that the velocities and trajectories of the particle-laden jets in a crossflow change depending on the solids-gas loading ratio, particle size, carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio and particle to gas velocity ratio at the jet exit.

  • We present a continuous size-dependent particle separator using a negative dielectrophoretic (DEP) virtual pillar array. Two major problems in the previous size-dependent particle separators include the particle clogging in the mechanical sieving structures and the fixed range of separable particle sizes. The present particle separator uses the virtual pillar array generated by negative DEP force instead of the mechanical pillar array, thus eliminating the clogging problems. It is also possible to adjust the size of separable particles since the size of virtual pillars is a function of a particle diameter and applied voltage. At an applied voltage of 500 kHz $10\;V_{rms}$ (root mean sqaure voltage) sinusidal wave and a flow rate of $0.40\;{\mu}l\;min^{-1}$, we separate $5.7\;{\mu}m$-, $8.0\;{\mu}m$-, $10.5\;{\mu}m$-, and $11.9\;{\mu}m$-diameter polystyrene (PS) beads with separation purity of 95%, 92%, 50%, and 63%, respectively. The $10.5\;{\mu}m$- and $11.9\;{\mu}m$-diameter PS beads have relatively low separation purity of 50% and 63%. However, at an applied voltage of $8\;V_{rms}$, we separate $11.9\;{\mu}m$-diameter PS beads with separation purity over 99%. Therefore, the present particle separator achieves clog-free size-dependent particle separation, which is capable of size tuning of separable particles.

  • Construction waste mainly consists of concrete aggregates of various size. Improper handling of concrete waste would be a major environmental problem whereas its recycling would be both economically useful and environmentally friendly. Bigger concrete aggregates are crushed and converted to medium and fine particles to make them recyclable. An apparatus to separate the concrete aggregates by their size is thus needed for their effective recycling. In this work, segregation of concrete particles in air flows from a newly designed rotary separator having three stages of blades is simulated using a commercial software, ANSYS-CFX. Both 2-D and 3-D models with 360, 240 and 180 blades in each stage are considered. Fundamental mechanism of separation of particles(pase) and the effect of design parameters such as particle size, rotor speed, air flow rate etc. on the performance of the separator are investigated. Critical size of particles that can be separated by the developed separator is also presented in this work. Simulation results are overall in good agreement with data predicted from the theoretical model previously reported in the companion paper.

  • A cascade impactor is a multistage impaction device used to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes. A micro-orifice impactor uses micro-orifice nozzles to extend the cut sizes of the lower stages to as small as 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter without resorting to low pressures or creating excessive pressure drops across the impactor stages. In this work, the phenomenon of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles was experimentally investigated for a commercial micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). It was observed, using an optical microscope, that the micro-orifice nozzles of the final stages were partially clogged due to particle deposition during the aerosol sampling. Therefore the pressure drops across the nozzles were higher than the nominal values given by the manufacturer. To examine the effect of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles, the particle collection efficiency of the MOUDI was evaluated using an electrical method for fine particles with diameters in the range of 0.1-0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were used as test aerosols. A faraday cage was employed to measure the low-level current of the charged particles upstream and downstream of each stage. It was found that the collection efficiency curves shifted to correspond to smaller orifice sizes, and the 50-% cutoff sizes were much smaller than those given by the manufacturer for the three stages with nozzles less than 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter.

  • A study on fugitive dust dispersion was conducted at Saemanguem reclaimed area located at the west coastal area of Jeon-buk Province Total reclaimed area is 40,100ha developed by building a 33km long sea dike through Gunsan, Gimje, and Buan. (Land: 28,300ha, Fresh Water Lake: 11,800ha) After this area was completely reclaimed in 2006, there has been high possibility of dust generation and dispersion to the neighboring area. The dust generated at the reclaimed land was composed mainly of minerals with high salinity, and it could make harmful effect on crop production as well on to human's health such as eye irritation and respiratory disease. Especially, when those aerosol particles are reached on the leaves of farm crops, the photosynthesis and respiration of the plants can be under restraint resulting in the decrease of agricultural productivity of the nearby farm areas. Furthermore, highly concentrated salty particles can directly damage the leaf cells. In this study, field experiment has been conducted to regularly measure the locally suspended dust particles and analyze how they were dispersed to the neighboring areas. The collected dust particles were analyzed to examine theirs sizes, concentrations, and components. The SPSS statistical program was also used to separate the dust concentration generated by the reclaimed land from the total dust concentration measured at the measuring locations.

  • This study presents a novel and eco-friendly process that can precisely control the location of the patches on the patch particles. The method of manufacturing these anisotropic hexagram patch particles consists of sequential combinations of two separate methods such as a sequential micromolding technique for fabricating patch particles and a selective localization method for controlling the location of patches on the patch particles. The micromolding technique was carried out using physicochemically stable material as a micromold. In order to fabricate the highly stable patch anisotropic hexagram particles, the perfluoropolyether (PFPE) micromold was used to the process of the micromolding technique because they could prevent the problem of diffusion of hydrophobic monomers while conventional poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) micromold is limited to prevent the problem of diffusion of hydrophobic monomers. Based on combination methods of the micromolding technique and the selective localization method, the reproducibility and stability have been improved to fabricate 12 different types of anisotropic hexagram patch particles. This fabrication method shows the unique advantages in eco-friend condition, easy and fast fabrication due to less number of process, the feasibility of a mass production. We believe that these anisotropic hexagram patch particles can be widely utilized to the field of the directional self-assembly.

  • In the present study, the distribution of glass particles inside 10 patrol cars of Chungnam Province has been studied. The target seats were front seats (driver’s seat, passenger’s seat) and the back seat. The target areas were the bottom of the seat (seat contacting buttocks, back of the seat, and the corner of the seat (the bottom and back attached part)). The target areas were tape lifted with an adhesive tape. The glass particles adhering to the adhesive tape were examined and counted under a stereomicroscope. The total number of glass particles found was 679. Among them, 471 (driver’s seat 293, passenger seat 178) were collected from front seats, which are usually occupied by police officers. The majority of glass particles were under 0.49 mm size. The results show that the majority of glass particles can be found on the front seats, rather than on the back seat. There is a high probability that glass particles found on the front seat adhere to police officers, so that to get further transferred to the convict upon physical contact (secondary transfer). Thus, there is a risk of misinterpretation of the value of glass evidence in the course of forensic examinations. Hence, a separate method to prevent cross contamination has to be prepared by police authorities as soon as possible.

  • Blind Source Separation (BSS) is a technique used to separate supposed independent sources of signals from a given set of observations. In this paper, the High Exploration Particle Swarm Optimization (HEPSO) algorithm, which is an enhancement of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, has been used to separate a set of source signals. Compared to PSO algorithm, HEPSO algorithm depends on two additional operators. The first operator is based on the multi-crossover mechanism of the genetic algorithm while the second one relies on the bee colony mechanism. Both operators have been employed to update the velocity and the position of the particles respectively. Thus, they are used to find the optimal separating matrix. The proposed method enhances the overall efficiency of the standard PSO in terms of good exploration and performance. Based on many tests realized on speech and music signals supplied by the BSS demo, experimental results confirm the robustness and the accuracy of the introduced BSS technique.

  • A vortex tube is a device that can separate small particles from a compressed gas or separate a compressed gas into hot and cold flows. We experimentally analyzed the energy-separation characteristics of a vortex tube with a diameter of 10 mm. We measured the energy-separation characteristics of the vortex tube for different inlet air pressures, orifice diameters, and tube lengths. The orifice diameter and inlet pressure are important for the vortex tube design and operation. The tube length has a small effect on the energy-separation performance. Maximum energy separation occurs for a vortex tube with Dc = 0.7 D and L = 16 D.
