  • The purpose of this study is to develop computer simulation model that produce precipitation patterns from stochastic model. In the paper(I) of this study, the alternate renewal process(ARP) is used for the daily precipitation series. In this paper(Il), stochastic simulation models for the daily precipitation series are developed by combining Markov chain for the precipitation occurrence process and continuous probability distribution for the precipitation amounts on the wet days. The precipitation occurrence is determined by first order Markov chain with two states(dry and wet). The amounts of precipitation, given that precipitation has occurred, are described by a Gamma, Pearson Type-III, Extremal Type-III, and 3 parameter Weibull distribution. Since the daily precipitation series shows seasonal variation, models are identified for each month of the year separately. To illustrate the application of the simulation models, daily precipitation data were taken from records at the seven locations of the Nakdong and Seomjin river basin. Simulated data were similar to actual data in terms of distribution for wet and dry spells, seasonal variability, and precipitation amounts.

  • To improve methods of screening rice cultivars with field resistance to bacterial leaf blight, testing plant inoculation and neighbor plant inoculation were compared by using 33 rice cultivars. In the testing plant inoculation method, field resistance was evaluated by measuring the leaf areas diseased on the new leaves expanded after the inoculation. Varietal differences in field resistance were recognized more clearly by the testing plant inoculation method than by the neighbor plant inoculation method. Highly significant correlation was observed between the results of the two methods. Some rice cultivars such as, Seomjin, Hangangchal, Taebaeg, Samgang, Milyang 42, Asominori, Java 14, Chugoku 45 and 70X-46 showed remarkable field resistance to bacterial leaf blight. The testing plant inoculation method appeared desirable for screening rice cultivars for the qualitative and field resistance to bacterial leaf blight because of using less labor and less field area than neighbor plant inoculation.

  • This study analyzes hydrometeorologic changes after a dam construction, and develops a model related to estimating the geographical boundary hour far hydrometeorologic changes could happen due to a dam construction. The model is applied to several dams, namely Seomjin Dam, Soyang Dam, Andong Dam, and Chungju Dam. Throughout estimating the correlation between albedo and recycling coefficients, the result confirms that the land use changes by dam construction are the critical factor on the recycling of the water in the air. It is also shown that the geographical boundary is highly related to the surface area of a dam. Finally, this model is expected to be applied to estimate its boundary of hydrometeorologic changes by a new dam construction.

  • This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution for the annual maximum series at ten watersheds along Han, Nagdong, Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Adequacy for the analysis of flood data used in this study was established by the tests of Independence, Homogeneity, detection of Outliers. L-coefficient of variation, L-skewness and L-kurtosis were calculated by L-moment ratio respectively. Parameters were estimated by the Methods of Moments and L-Moments. Design floods obtained by Methods of Moments and L-Moments using different methods for plotting positions in GEV distribution were compared by the Relative Mean Errors(RME) and Relative Absolute Errors(RAE). The results were analyzed and summarized as follows. 1. Adequacy for the analysis of flood data was acknowledged by the tests of Independence, Homogeneity and detection of Outliers. 2. GEV distribution used in this study was found to be more suitable one than Pearson type 3 distribution by the goodness of fit test using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and L-Moment ratios diagram in the applied watersheds. 3. Parameters for GEV distribution were estimated using Methods of Moments and L-Moments. 4. Design floods were calculated by Methods of Moments and L-Moments in GEV distribution. 5. It was found that design floods derived by the method of L-Moments using Weibull plotting position formula in GEV distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by method of moments using different formulas for plotting positions from the viewpoint of Relative Mean Errors and Relative Absolute Errors.

  • To elucidate the spawning behavior and early life history of Liobagrus mediadiposalis, mature male and female fish were collected from a branch of the Seomjin River. Spawning was induced by injecting hormones, and then the spawning process and development of fertilized eggs, larvae, and juveniles were observed. Observations of spawning behavior showed that the female established a territory and built a spawning nest, and frequently pressed on the upper ventral part of the male to release her eggs. When spawning was finished, the fish supplied fresh water to the egg mass using their pectoral and caudal fins. Hatching began 189 h 20 min after fertilization at $21.5-23.5^{\circ}C$ (mean $22.7^{\circ}C$). The mean total length (TL) of newly hatched larvae was 7.18-7.39 mm (mean 7.31 mm). Their mouth and anus were already open and they had 14+24=38 myotomes. Eighteen days after hatching, the larvae were 12.71-13.79 mm (mean 13.27 mm) in TL and the yolk sac was absorbed completely. At 35 days after hatching, when all the fin-rays had formed, the juveniles were 15.84-17.92 mm (mean 16.33 mm) in TL.

  • In order to support the basic information for planning and performing the environment management such as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), it is highly recommended to understand the spatial distribution of water quality and runoff data in the unit watersheds. Therefore, in the present study, we applied Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to detect the characteristics of spatial distribution of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentration and runoff data which have been measured in the Yeongsan, Seomjin, and Tamjin River basins. For the purpose, the input dataset for SOM was constructed with the mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis values of the respective data measured from the stations of 22-subbasins in the rivers. The results showed that the $4{\times}4$ array structure of SOM was selected by the trial and error method and the best performance was revealed when it classified the stations into three clusters according to the basic statistics. The cluster-1 and 2 were classified primarily by the skewness and kurtosis of runoff data and the cluster-3 including the basic statistics of YB_B, YB_C, and YB_D stations was clearly decomposed by the mean value of BOD concentration showing the worst condition of water quality among the three clusters. Consequently, the methodology based on the SOM proposed in the present study can be considered that it is highly applicable to detect the spatial distribution of BOD concentration and runoff data and it can be used effectively for the further utilization using different water quality items as a data analysis tool.

  • We propose a method for deriving the relationship between channel width and discharge from remote sensing products. Stream widths at points distributed along a river network can be measured from high-resolution remote imagery. Further, corresponding drainage area for these points can be calculated using digital elevation models, making it possible to construct width-drainage area relation. On the other hand, the relationship between the flow discharge and the drainage area is obtained from historical data measured at ground stations. By coupling these two relationships, we can finally derive the width-discharge relationship which comprises an important component of downstream hydraulic geometry. The proposed method was tested for the Nakdong River and the Seomjin River, successfully capturing power-law exponents in the width-discharge relationships reported in earlier studies. The proposed approach can serve as an alternative for obtaining the hydraulic geometry relationship under the limits of ground data.

  • This study assessed the water use vulnerability for 12 basins of South Korea. The annual runoff of 12 basins are derived using a Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and the calculated runoff per unit area and population are compared with each basin. The 18 indicators are selected in order to assess the vulnerability. Those are classified by aspects of demand, loss and supply of water use. Their weighting values used Entropy method to determine objective weights. To quantitatively assess the water use vulnerability, the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) based on multi-criteria decision making are applied. The results show that the water availability vulnerability of Hyeongsan River has the highest value followed by Sapgyo River; Dongjin River; Seomjin River; Anseong River; Mangyung River; Nakdong River; Tamjin River; Youngsan River, Geum River; Taehwa River; and Han River. The result of this study has a capability to provide references for the index deveopment of climate change vulnerability assessment.

  • Sea water samples collected in August, 1994 from 20 stations in the Kwangyang Bay were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) to investigate persistence and distribution pattern of four organophosphorus pesticides (DDVP, Diazinon, IBP, EDDP). Except for IBP, the contamination by DDVP, Diazinon, and EDDP in marine aquatic environment in Korea has not been reported previously. In this study, however, all these four pesticides were detected in all stations (except DDVP) and their concentrations were in ng/L level. The concentrations ranged from detection limit to 15.3ng/L for DDVP, 1.8-27.7ng/L for Diazinon, 7.3-63.5ng/L for IBP, and 22.2-1100.1ng/L for EDDP. It is noteworthy that the measured concentrations of IBP and EDDP in this study would be much lower than usual, since the use of IBP and EDDP was less than 50% of average annual consumption due to unusually dry and hot weather condition in the summer of 1994. It was very surprising to find that the highest concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides were observed at stations near Daesa Streamlet instead of Seomjin River, which has more point source of the pesticides. This result suggests that the small river discharge during heavy ram period in summer can give harmful effect on marine biota (both wild and aqua-cultured) with its organophosphorus pesticide residue, despite of their short residence time in aquatic environment. In order to protect the marine life properly from acute toxicity of the organophosphorus pesticides, it needs to be emphasized that monitoring the level of agricultural pesticides in river run-off should be done during active consumption period rather at regular intervals.

  • Purpose: This study attempted to investigate the prevalence and related factors of Clonorchiasis among five major riverside residents in South Korea. Methods: This study is descriptive research, nationwide survey, and the subjects are 23,492 residents selected by convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted between March 1 and June 30, 2011, and stool collection and questionnaire survey were conducted by affiliated public health centers in 38 cities and Gun's. Results: The prevalence rates of Clonorchiasis in the five major riversides were as follows: the Guem River 15.2%; the Nakdong River 11.9%; the Seomjin River 10.9%; the Han River 5.7%; and the Yeongsan River 3.9%. The prevalence rates were shown to be significantly high among people who had highly frequent experiences of eating and cooking freshwater raw fish, were diagnosed with liver and/or biliary tract diseases, and drank less than once a month. Conclusion: These results suggest that it is necessary to improve awareness of Clonorchiasis and provide intensive public health education for the riverside residents. And the target groups should be set up by reflecting the characteristics of at-risk groups, and it is necessary to prepare customized strategies for prevention and management of Clonorchiasis.
