  • This study was to determine the effects of a massage and oro-facial exercise program on spastic dysarthric patients' lip muscle function using an electromyogram (EMG). Three subjects with Spastic Dysarthria participated in the study. The surface electrodes were positioned on the Levator Labii Superior Muscle (LLSM), Depressor Labii Inferior Muscle (DLIM), and Orbicularis Oris Muscle (OOM). To examine lip muscle function improvement, the EMG signals were analyzed in terms of RMS (Root Mean Square) values and Median Frequency. In addition, the diadochokinetic movements and the rate of sentence reading were measured. The results revealed that the RMS values were decreased and the Median Frequency moved to a high frequency area. Diadochokinesis and sentence reading rates were improved.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic evaluation technique for the prosodic aspect of an English sentence uttered by Korean speakers learning English. The underlying hypothesis is that the consistency of the manual prosody scoring is reflected in an imaginary space of prosody evaluation model constructed out of the three physical properties of the prosody considered in this paper, namely: the fundamental frequency (F0) contour, the intensity contour, and the segmental durations. The evaluation proceeds first by building a prosody evaluation model for the sentence. For the creation of the model, utterances from native speakers of English and Korean learners for the target sentence are manually scored by either native teachers of English or Korean phoneticians in terms of their prosody. Multiple native utterances from the manual scoring are selected as the "model" native utterances against which all the other Korean learners' utterances as well as the model utterances themselves can be semi-automatically evaluated by comparison in terms of the three prosodic aspects [7]. Each learner utterance, when compared to the multiple model native utterances, produces multiple coordinates in a three-dimensional space of prosody evaluation, each axis of which corresponds to the three prosodic aspects. The 3D coordinates from all the comparisons form a prosody evaluation model for the particular sentence and the associated manual scores can display regions of particular scores. The model can then be used as a predictive model against which other Korean utterances of the target sentence can be evaluated. The model from a Korean phonetician appears to support the hypothesis.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to extract a definitional answer sentence for a Definitional Question-Answering System. definitional answer sentence patterns are manually constructed with restriction rules to patterns, and a ranking information of the pattern using its frequency from the corpus. answer sentence pattern consists of the syntactic structure of a definitional answer sentence, and clue words. this system show 83% accuracy for untrained corpus.

  • The longer the input sentences, the worse the parsing results. To improve the parsing performance, many methods about long sentence segmentation have been reserarched. As an isolating language, Chinese sentence has fewer cues for sentence segmentation. However, the average frequency of comma usage in Chinese is higher than that of other languages. The syntactic information that the comma conveys can play an important role in long sentence segmentation of Chinese languages. This paper proposes a method for classifying commas in Chinese sentences according to the context where the comma occurs. Then, sentences are segmented using the classification result. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the comma classification reaches 87.1%, and with our segmentation model, the dependency parsing accuracy of our parser is improved by 5.6%.

  • This study aims to help Korean English learners to learn English pronunciation by revealing which suprasegmentals affect the implementation of English sentences closer to native English speakers when they read English sentences. To this end, Korean middle school English learners were selected as subjects and research data were gathered through sentence types (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamative), as well as syllables. Speech rate, pause frequency, pause duration, F0 range, and rhythm among suprasegmentals were used for analysis of these English sentence utterances. Mean analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were performed. The results showed that speech rate, pause frequency, pause duration, and F0 range affected the evaluation of fluency levels. In the regression analysis between all suprasegmentals and fluency levels, the suprasegmentals that most affected fluency levels were speech rate and F0 range. Rhythm had no meaningful relation with fluency levels. Therefore, when teaching English pronunciation, it is necessary to teach students to increase their speech rate and F0 range. In addition, students should be trained to reduce both the number and the duration of pauses during utterance to improve their fluency. It is noteworthy that of the four sentence types, exclamative sentences were produced with faster speech rate, fewer pauses, shorter pause duration, and higher rhythm values.

  • Frequency adverbs can be interpreted as an adverb of quantification, and also as a frequentative adverb. These interpretations are related to the frequency adverbs' distributions, and the relation between semantics and syntax of frequency adverbs can be observed more explicitly when they appear with some other expressions in a sentence. Two frequency adverbs in Korean, cacwu and cakkwu, which seem to mean 'often/frequently', will be dealt with. We will specify their syntactic position by their interpretations derived from the relative ordering with other elements.

  • Purpose One of the reasons for the expansion of information systems in the enterprise is the increased efficiency of data analysis. In particular, the rapidly increasing data types which are complex and unstructured such as video, voice, images, and conversations in and out of social networks. The purpose of this study is the customer needs analysis from customer voices, ie, text data, in the web environment.. Design/methodology/approach As previous study results, the word frequency of the sentence is extracted as a word that interprets the sentence has better affects than frequency analysis. In this study, we applied the TF-IDF method, which extracts important keywords in real sentences, not the TF method, which is a word extraction technique that expresses sentences with simple frequency only, in Korean language research. We visualized the two techniques by cluster analysis and describe the difference. Findings TF technique and TF-IDF technique are applied for Korean natural language processing, the research showed the value from frequency analysis technique to semantic analysis and it is expected to change the technique by Korean language processing researcher.

  • This study sought to explore the types of predictable pattern books are suitable for reading aloud, the differences between English and translated Korean picture books in terms of their characteristics of speakability and the meaning of sentences. This study investigated a total of 112 picture books. The predictable pattern types were analyzed specifically, compared with onomatopoeia, mimetic words, repetition, rhyme, the shift of sentence and style types. The results indicated that predictable pattern books could be classified into eight types and the number of sentences in translated books increased owing to the difference of sentence structure. In terms of speakability, words in repetition, onomatopoeia and mimetic words represented higher frequency except rhyme because of the difference of characteristics of the two languages. Furthermore, translations used strategies of the shift in sentence and style types for speakability. These findings demonstrate that predictable pattern books can serve as good materials to read aloud for young children not only in terms of English picture books but also translated books regardless of concerns regarding their speakability.

  • The effects of the Case, Part of Speech, Word and Clause Location, Word Frequency etc. were studied in discriminating the similar sentences of the Korean text. Word Frequency was much related to the discrimination of similarity and Tilte word and Functional Clause were little, but the others were not. The cosine coefficient and Salton'similarity measurement are used to measure the similarity between sentences. The change of clauses between each sentence is also used to unify the similar sentences into a represenative sentence.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate syntactic development of Korean by analysing the spontaneous speech data. Thirty children(3, 5, and 7-year-old and 10 per each age group) and 10 adults are employed as subjects for this study. Speech data were recorded and transcribed in orthography. Transcribed data are analysed syntactically: sentence(simple vs complex) patterns and clause patterns(4 basic types according to the predicate) etc. The results are as follows: 1) simple sentences show higher frequency for the upper age groups, 2) complex sentences with conjunctive and embedded clauses show higher frequency for the upper age groups.
