The Review of Proprioceptive Activities in Sensory Integration Intervention (감각통합치료에서 고유수용성 감각 활동에 관한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide definition of proprioception, foundations and roles of neuroanatomy, and systemical review of proprioceptive activities in sensory integration intervention. Proprioception exists in muscle, ligaments, joints and skin and it plays important role in controling body movements and interacting with environment during child development. Proprioception interacting with tactile and vestibular systems contributes to the change of muscle tone, postural control, refinements of planning and praxis. Children who are deficit in proprioceptive processing would seek hypo-responsive proprioceptive input or avoid hyperactive one. Outcome of poor proprioceptive input would cause the problems of praxis and postural control. Because proprioception provides information about the position and movement of body and limb it is important for development of body scheme and motor planning. It also influences the arousal and emotional tone. Sensory integration intervention which provides rich proprioceptive activities will improve the level of arousal and enhance motor planning.

Intervention of Sensory Integration for Adult Patients: A Systematic Review (성인에게 적용된 감각통합 중재에 대한 체계적 고찰)

  • Objective : The purpose of this systematic review was to inform intervention of sensory integration in adult patients and to provide evidence regarding occupational therapy. Methods : Studies for this review were collected by searching the Pubmed, Scopus, SAGE Journal, Medline, RISS database for articles from 1980 to 2017, using the following keywords: "(sensory integration OR sensory processing OR sensory integrative OR sensory based OR sensory defensiveness) AND adult" A total of 8 studies were included in the analysis. The selected papers were analyzed by using PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework. Results : The participants' diagnoses were learning disabilities, intellectual disability, dementia and sensory processing disorder. Assessment tools and intervention methods varied according to the researcher's intent. In most studies, sensory integration intervention was shown to be effective. Conclusion : This study was able to confirm that sensory integration intervention was available and effective for adult patients. This was intended to provide clinical evidence for occupational therapists, and further studies should be conducted to establish the application of sensory integration interventions to adults based on this study.

The Influence on Sensory Processing Ability and Social Maturity of Multicultural Children in Farming Villages (농촌지역 다문화가정 아동의 감각처리능력과 사회성숙에 관한 연구)

  • The research has been carried out to examine how sensory processing ability of children of multicultural families in farming areas can affect their social maturity. Short sensory profile and social maturity scale were conducted to fifty four children of multinational parents who live in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Jeollanam-do. The data were analysed by statistics process. The result of the analysis revealed three findings. Firstly, there exieted certain delays in sensory processing ability and social maturity. Multicultural children had an average point of $154.33{\pm}21.24$ regarding sensory processing ability and with regards to social age and social quotient of social maturity of them were 1.76 year old and $91.28{\pm}18.31$ point respectively. Another interesting finding is that significant differences of the influence, in which sensory processing ability of the example group affected social maturity, were found in categories of movement sensitivity, underresponsive/seeks sensation and low energy/weak of social age part(p<0.05). There were significant differences between auditory filtering as well as movement sensitivity, underresponsive sensation and low energy/weak of social quotient area(p<0.05). Finally, variables of the impact on social maturity of the group of children were analysed to examine to what extent sensory processing ability of the children had affected and the influencing rate of social age and social quotient of social maturity, with 45.3% and 66.3% respectively.

Sensory, Physicochemical and Microbiological Changes in Water-cooked Salted Duck during Storage at 4℃

  • Water-cooked salted ducks were tray-packaged and stored under refrigeration ($4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) in order to evaluate the quality changes during storage. pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), sensory and microbiological analysis were determined at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 days of storage. pH value and TVB-N (mg N/100 g) varied from $6.47{\pm}0.16$ to $6.69{\pm}0.10$ and from $5.90{\pm}0.93$ to $13.42{\pm}2.46$, respectively. Sensory results indicated that ducks were unacceptable at the 10th day of storage. The predominant spoilage bacteria at the end of the shelf-life were Brochothrix thermosphacta, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and minor components were Enterobacteriaceae, members of Micrococci, yeasts and moulds. Pseudomonads were also detected. Both total bacteria and the various spoilage ones, overall, increased from the initial sampling to the final day.

Relationship Between Interoceptive Awareness, Tactile Processing, and Heart Rate Variability (내수용 감각과 촉각처리 및 심박변이도 간의 관계)

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between interoceptive awareness, sensory processing, and heart rate variability which reflects the function of the autonomic nervous system. Methods : Young adults completed the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP) and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) for sensory processing and interoceptive awareness, respectively. Heart rate was recorded using electrocardiograms during the resting period, and the standard deviation of normal-to-normal interval (SDNN) was extracted. The correlation between sensory sections of the AASP and subscales of the MAIA was analyzed, and the differences in touch and interoceptive awareness between groups with high and low SDNN were compared. Results : The touch of the AASP showed a relatively strong correlation with the subscales of the MAIA. Higher touch scores were associated with lower scores of not-worrying and attention regulation, but higher emotional awareness. The high SDNN group showed a tendency of higher interoceptive awareness compared to the low SDNN group. Conclusion : This study demonstrated the tactile processing has the relationship with interoceptive awareness and individuals with higher heart rate variability tend to have greater interoceptive awareness. This study provides information on interoceptive awareness, which is emphasized in recent occupational therapy and sensory integration practices, and deepens the understanding of neurophysiological mechanism of sensory integration.

A Content Validity Study of the Korean Translation Version of the Sensory Processing and Self-Regulation Checklist (SPSRC) (감각처리 및 자기조절 체크리스트(SPSRC)의 국내적용을 위한 번안 및 내용타당도 연구)

  • Objective : This study was adapted into Korean for domestic use of the Sensory Processing and Self-Regulation Checklist (here in after referred to as SPSRC) and verified its content validity. Methods : The Korean version of the SPSRC, which was completed via a translation, content suitability, reverse translation, expert committee review, and content understanding process, was presented to three professors of the Department of Occupational Therapy and seven occupational therapists to confirm the content validity. Results : The content validity index (CVI) of the Korean version of the SPSRC was 0.9 or higher in all 130 items. Additionally, the CVI of all items was also 0.99, showing a high level of content validity result. Conclusion : The Korean version of the SPSRC was confirmed to have high content validity as a tool that can measure children's sensory processing ability and self-regulation ability together. The Korean version of the SPSRC facilitates the understanding and evaluation of children's sensory processing and self-regulation abilities in the clinical field, and is thought to be used to establish an intervention plan.

Sensory Characteristics of Espresso Coffee According to Green Coffee Processing (생두 가공법에 따른 에스프레소 커피의 관능 특성)

  • Coffee beans are processed from coffee cherries by either natural, pulped natural, or washing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physiochemical and sensory characteristics of espresso coffees processed by different methods. The color of the washed coffee sample presented the highest value of lightness while the natural coffee sample presented the highest value of redness and yellowness. The biggest difference in brewed coffee, whether natural, pulped natural, or washed, was in the TDS content, which was higher in natural coffee and lower in washed coffee. Sensory descriptive analysis and acceptance test for espresso coffee using a 15 cm line scale were carried out by 12 trained panelists. Natural coffee had the highest cherry-like flavor and sweetness taste while washed coffee had the highest citrus flavor and acidity taste. An important attribute of espresso coffee is body, and natural coffee presented strong body while washed coffee presented a low body attribute. In conclusion, significant differences were observed among the three processing methods of green coffee. Pulped natural coffees presented intermediate physiochemical and sensory characteristics compared to washed and natural coffee. Natural coffees are appreciated for their increased body, and washed coffees are appreciated for added citrus flavors and acidity espresso coffee blends.

A Comparison of Sensory Processing Ability Depending on the Smartphone Usage of Toddlers in the "Smartphone Addiction" Risk Group (스마트폰 중독 위험군 유아의 스마트폰 사용시간에 따른 감각처리능력의 비교)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference between smartphone addiction and sensory processing ability depending on the time of smartphone usage by at risk of smartphone addiction. Methods : Participants of this study were 124 toddlers in a The data collection period was from September 2019 to December 2019. Measurements in this study included a questionnaire on general information about the subject, a smartphone addiction scale, and a short sensory profile. Methods for the data analysis included descriptive statistics and an independent t-test using SPSS 22.0. Results : There were significant differences between groups depending on smartphone usage time in terms of total smartphone addiction, salience, impulse-compulsive use, withdrawal, tolerance, and interpersonal conflict among toddlers. There were also significant difference in sensory processing ability between groups according to the total Short Sensory Profile score (and in all sub-domains; p=.000 ~ .042). Conclusion : This study found that there was a difference in smartphone addiction and sensory processing ability depending on the smartphone usage time of toddlers at risk of smartphone. It is meaningful because it raises the need for education on the use of smartphones by toddlers.

The factor of sensory processing that affect on the motor and process skill of children with cerebral palsy (뇌성마비 아동의 운동 및 처리기술에 영향을 미치는 감각처리 요인)

  • This study was conducted to identify sensory processing factors that affect motor and process skills of children with cerebral palsy. A total of 36 children with cerebral palsy who attended at the J pediatric development center and the N rehabilitation hospital in Seoul participated. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to test the relationship between motor skills, process skills and sensory processing abilities of children. Moreover, hierarchical multiple regression was used to identify the sensory processing factors influencing motor and process skills. Motor skills of children with cerebral palsy were correlated with auditory filtering, low energy/weakness, and visual/auditory sensitivity of sensory processing items, whereas process skills were correlated with tactile sensitivity and taste/smell sensitivity. The hierarchical regression model for motor skills revealed movement sensitivity, auditory filtering, and low energy/weakness as significant factors influencing sensory processing items. However, no factors were shown to influence process skills. The results of this study will be useful as a basic resource for rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. However, further studies evaluating a larger population should be conducted to verify the results presented herein.

Effects of Sensory Processing Characteristics on Parenting Stress in Developmentally Delayed and Typically Developed Children's Parents (발달지연아동과 일반아동 부모의 감각처리 특성이 양육 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the sensory processing characteristics of parents of developmentally delayed children and parents of typically developed children on parenting stress. Methods : From July to August 2022, 61 parents of children with developmental delays and 64 parents of children with typical development who used occupational therapy services at pediatric clinics and child development centers were evaluated for parenting stress and sensory profiles. Results : In a multiple regression analysis on the effect of sensory processing characteristics on the total score of parenting stress, tactile processing (β = 0.353, p = 0.001), gender (β = 0.438, p = 0.000), and monthly income (β = -0.261, p = 0.014) significantly affected the parenting stress of the parents of children with developmental delay. In parents of typically developing children, tactile processing (β = 0.376, p = 0.002) and gender (β = -0.264, p = 0.024) were found to have a significant effect on parenting stress. Conclusion : Parental gender and tactile processing characteristics of developmentally delayed and typically developing children are significant influencing factors for parenting stress.
