This paper presents a systematic investigation of the effect of sensor location on the data quality and subsequently, on the effectiveness of machine health monitoring. Based on an analysis of the signal propagation process from the defect location to the sensor, numerical simulations using finite element modeling were conducted on a bearing test bed to determine the signal strength at several representative sensor locations. The results showed that placing sensors closely to the machine component being monitored is critical to achieving high signal-to-noise ratio, thus improving the data quality. Using millimeter-sized piezoceramic plates, the obtained results were evaluated experimentally. A comparison with a set of commercial vibration sensors verified the developed structural dynamics-based sensor placement strategy. It further demonstrated that the proposed shock wave-based sensing technique provided an effective alternative to vibration measurement, while requiring less space for sensor installation.

To ensure high quality data being used for data mining or feature extraction in the bridge structural health monitoring (SHM) system, a practical sensor fault diagnosis methodology has been developed based on the similarity of symmetric structure responses. First, the similarity of symmetric response is discussed using field monitoring data from different sensor types. All the sensors are initially paired and sensor faults are then detected pair by pair to achieve the multi-fault diagnosis of sensor systems. To resolve the coupling response issue between structural damage and sensor fault, the similarity for the target zone (where the studied sensor pair is located) is assessed to determine whether the localized structural damage or sensor fault results in the dissimilarity of the studied sensor pair. If the suspected sensor pair is detected with at least one sensor being faulty, field test could be implemented to support the regression analysis based on the monitoring and field test data for sensor fault isolation and reconstruction. Finally, a case study is adopted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. As a result, Dasarathy's information fusion model is adopted for multi-sensor information fusion. Euclidean distance is selected as the index to assess the similarity. In conclusion, the proposed method is practical for actual engineering which ensures the reliability of further analysis based on monitoring data.
Dual electromagnetic sensor is used for sensing the weld line. The sensor consists of excitation and two sensing coil wound over the ferro-magnetic core. By using the dual sensor, the effect of noise is minimized. It is based on the generation of eddy currents in the welding plate by passing current through the excitation coil. The sensor can be used to track the butt joints having no gap between them, where a vision based sensor fails to track. Sensor sensitivity depends on the number of coil turns, frequency of excitation, distance of a sensor from the work piece, diameter of core, etc. The whole system consists of a sensor, a signal processing board, a motion controller and a personnel computer (PC). The raw sensor signal is processed using the signal processing board. It consists of amplification, rectification, filtering, averaging, offset adjustment, etc. Based on sensor data, the motion controller adjusts the position of a welding torch.
이를 위해서 센서를 모델링 하기 위한 표준 언어로 SensorML(Sensor Model Language)이 있다.

Energy constraint of wireless sensor networks makes energy saving and prolonging the network lifetime become the most important goals of routing protocols. In this paper, we propose an Energy Efficient Chain-based Routing Protocol (EECRP) for wireless sensor networks to minimize energy consumption and transmission delay. EECRP organizes sensor nodes into a set of horizontal chains and a vertical chain. Chain heads are elected based on the residual energy of nodes and distance from the header of upper level. In each horizontal chain, sensor nodes transmit their data to their own chain head based on chain routing mechanism. EECRP also adopts a chain-based data transmission mechanism for sending data packets from the chain heads to the base station. The simulation results show that EECRP outperforms LEACH, PEGASIS and ECCP in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption, number of data messages received at the base station, transmission delay and especially energy${\times}$delay metric.
In this paper, We propose a transaction signing-based authentication scheme for protecting sinkhole attacks in wireless sensor networks. Sinkhole attack makes packets that flow network pass through attacker. So, Sinkhole attack can be extended to various kind of attacks such as denial of service attacks, selective delivery or data tamper etc. We analyze sinkhole attack methods in directed diffusion based wireless sensor networks. For the purpose of response to attack method, Transaction signing-based authentication scheme is proposed. This scheme can work for those sensor networks which use directed diffusion based wireless sensor networks. The validity of proposed scheme is provided by BAN logic.
As body sensor network (BSN) research becomes mature, the need for managing power consumption of sensor nodes has become evident since most of the applications are designed for continuous monitoring. Real time Electrocardiograph (ECG) analysis on sensor nodes is proposed as an optimal choice for saving power consumption by reducing data transmission overhead. Smart sensor nodes with the ability to categorize lately detected ECG cycles communicate with base station only when ECG cycles are classified as abnormal. In this paper, ECG classification algorithms are described, which categorize detected ECG cycles as normal or abnormal, or even more specific cardiac diseases. Our Euclidean distance (ED) based classification method is validated to be most power efficient and very accurate in determining normal or abnormal ECG cycles. A close comparison of power efficiency and classification accuracy between our ED classification algorithm and generalized linear model (GLM) based classification algorithm is provided. Through experiments we show that, CPU cycle power consumption of ED based classification algorithm can be reduced by 31.21% and overall power consumption can be reduced by 13.63% at most when compared with GLM based method. The accuracy of detecting NSR, APC, PVC, SVT, VT, and VF using GLM based method range from 55% to 99% meanwhile, we show that the accuracy of detecting normal and abnormal ECG cycles using our ED based method is higher than 86%.

In order to reduce the distribution cost of sensor nodes, a mobile sensor deployment has been proposed. The mobile sensor deployment can be solved by finding the optimal layout and planning the movement of sensor nodes with minimum energy consumption. However, previous studies have not sufficiently addressed these issues with an efficient way. Therefore, we propose a new deployment approach satisfying these features, namely a tree-based approach. In the tree-based approach, we propose three matching schemes. These matching schemes match each sensor node to a vertex in a rake tree, which can be trivially transformed to the target layout. In our experiments, the tree-based approach successfully deploys the sensor nodes in the optimal layout and consumes less energy than previous works.
Wireless sensor networks are used to monitor and control areas in a variety of military and civilian areas such as battlefield surveillance, intrusion detection, disaster recovery, biological detection, and environmental monitoring. Since the sensor nodes are randomly placed in the area of interest, separation of the sensor network area may occur due to environmental obstacles or a sensor may not exist in some areas. Also, in the situation where the sensor node is placed in a non-relocatable place, some node may exhaust energy or physical hole of the sensor node may cause coverage hole. Coverage holes can affect the performance of the entire sensor network, such as reducing data reliability, changing network topologies, disconnecting data links, and degrading transmission load. It is possible to solve the problem that occurs in the coverage hole by finding a coverage hole in the sensor network and further arranging a new sensor node in the detected coverage hole. The existing coverage hole detection technique is based on the location of the sensor node, but it is inefficient to mount the GPS on the sensor node having limited resources, and performing other location information processing causes a lot of message transmission overhead. In this paper, we propose an Adjacent Matrix-based Hole Coverage Discovery(AMHCD) scheme based on connectivity of neighboring nodes. The method searches for whether the connectivity of the neighboring nodes constitutes a closed shape based on the adjacent matrix, and determines whether the node is an internal node or a boundary node. Therefore, the message overhead for the location information strokes does not occur and can be applied irrespective of the position information error.
In this short review, we explore the recent progress in metal-based gas-sensing techniques. The strong interaction between the metal films and hydrogen gas can be considered to play a considerably important role in the gas-sensing technique. The physical and chemical reactions in Pd-Pd hydride systems were studied in terms of the phase transition and lattice expansion of the metals. Two types of represented detection, electrical and optical, were introduced and discussed along with their advantages.
