  • Nuclear power plants have a lower cost of power generation, and they are more eco-friendly than other power generation plants. Also, we need to prepare nuclear plant accidents because of their severe damage. In the event of a safety accident, such as a radiation leak, by applying a wireless sensor network to a nuclear power plant, many sensor nodes can be used to monitor radiation and transmit information to an external base station to appropriately respond to the accident. However, applying a wireless sensor network to nuclear power plants requires routing protocols that consider the sensor network size and bypass obstacles such as plant buildings. In general, the hierarchical-based routing protocols are efficient in energy consumption. In this study, we look into the problems that may occur if hierarchical-based routing protocols are applied to nuclear power plants and propose improved routing protocols to solve these problems. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol is more effective in energy consumption than the existing LEACH protocol.

  • There are two types of WSN(wireless sensor networks) in terms of sensor node's capability, that is, homogeneous or heterogeneous WSN. Even though the latter has better performance than the former, it requires some overhead for deploying nodes or clustering the network. In this paper, we propose a new scheme, called VHS(Virtual Heterogenous Sensor-Network), which uses a homogeneous WSN regarding energy in a heterogeneous way. The proposed scheme's performance has been evaluated and compared with other homogeneous schemes by simulation. The results are shown to be better than the other existing homogeneous schemes used in a sample sensor network application.

  • The sensor networks should be appropriately designed by applied network purpose, so that they can support proper application functions. Based on the design of suitable network model, the network lifetime can be maximized than using other general strategies which have not the consideration of specific network environments. In this paper, we propose a non-deterministic agent scheme to the mobile sink in distributed wireless sensor networks. The sensor network area can be divided into several sensor regions. Hence, to these such networks, the specified suitable scheme is requested by the applied network model to implement satisfactory network management. In this paper, we theoretically represent the proposed scheme, and provide the evaluation with the simulation results.

  • The maintenance of sensor networks, especially sensor networks installed in a wide area for regional monitoring has been an issue for a long time. In this study, a system that supplies energy to the sensor network using a robot is proposed, and the survival conditions of the sensor network are identified using the energy consumption rate of the sensor network, the energy transfer rate, and the moving distance of the robot as variables. Through numerical verification and robot charging simulation, the proposed system survival conditions are shown to be valid, and the feasibility of the maintenance method of the sensor network using the robot is validated through actual charging experiments.

  • In wireless sensor network, many sensor nodes are distributed in the field. They communicate the sensing data each other and forward it to sink. Routing protocols, which define the delivery methods of sending data, affect to the lifetime of sensor network. This paper proposes RTAF that is a routing-tree construction algorithm of sensor nodes by a single flooding process in wireless sensor network. A routing tree is constructed by selecting a parent node using the forward-direction flooding packet and gathering children nodes using the reverse-direction flooding packet. In this process, a node with much energy becomes the parent node. And the routing tree is periodically reconstructed in order to distribute the loads of parent nodes. The proposed algorithm compared performance with Modified-LEACH using NS2 network simulation tool. The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm constructs a routing-tree faster and reduced 40-80% in routing-tree construction packet.

  • Because of unreplenishable power resources, reducing node energy consumption to extend network lifetime is an important requirement in wireless sensor networks. In addition both path length and path cost are important metrics affecting sensor lifetime. We propose a dynamic clustering scheme based on location in wireless sensor networks. Our scheme can localize the effects of route failures, reduce control traffic overhead, and thus enhance the reachability to the destination. We have evaluated the performance of our clustering scheme through a simulation and analysis. We provide simulation results showing a good performance in terms of approximation ratios.

  • This paper describes the steering control and geomagnetism cancellation for an autonomous vehicle using an MR sensor. The magneto-resistive (MR) sensor obtains the vector summation of the magnetic fields from embedded magnets and the Earth. The vehicle is controlled by the magnetic fields from embedded magnets. So, geomagnetism is the disturbance in the steering control system. In this paper, we propose a new method of the sensor arrangement in order to remove the geomagnetism and vehicle body interference. The proposed method uses two MR sensors located in a level plane and the steering controller has been developed. The controller has three input variables ($dB_x$, $dB_y$, $dB_z$) using the measured magnetic field difference, and an output variable (the steering angle). A simulation program was developed to acquire the data to teach the neural network, in order to test the ability of a neural network to learn the steering control process. Also, the computer simulation of the vehicle (including vehicle dynamics and steering) was used to verify the steering performance of the vehicle controller using the neural network. From the simulation and field test, good result was obtained and we confirmed the robustness of the neural network controller in a real autonomous vehicle.

  • In wireless sensor networks where there is no centralized base station, each node has limited transmission range and the multi-hop routing for transmitting data to the destination is the one of the important technical issues. In particular, the wireless sensor network is not powered by external power source but operates by its own battery, so it is required to maximize the network life through efficient use of energy. To balance the power consumption, the residual power based adaptive power control is required in routing protocol. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes by controlling the transmit power according to the residual power. We evaluate the proposed routing protocol using extensive simulation, and the results show that the proposed routing scheme can balance the power consumption and prolong network lifetime.

  • In this paper, I propose a new energy efficient clustering scheme to prolong the network lifetime by reducing energy consumption at the sensor node. It is possible that a node determines whether to participate in clustering with certain probability based on local density. This scheme is useful under the environment that sensor nodes are deployed unevenly within the sensing area. By adjusting the probability of participating in clustering dynamically with local density of nodes, the energy consumption of the network is reduced. So, the lifetime of the network is extended. In the region where nodes are densely deployed, it is possible to reduce the energy consumption of the network by limiting the number of node which is participated in clustering with probability which can be adjusted dynamically based on local density of the node. Through computer simulation, it is verified that the proposed scheme is more energy efficient than LEACH protocol under the environment where node are densely located in a specific area.
