Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques based on the use of active-sensing piezoelectric (PZT) materials have received considerable attention. The validation of the PZT functionality during SHM operation is critical to successfully implementing a reliable SHM system. In this study, we investigated several parameters that affect the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process. We experimentally identified the temperature dependency of the active-sensor diagnostic process. We found that the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process can differentiate the adhesion conditions of bonding materials that are used to install a PZT on a structure, which is important when designing a sensor diagnostic process for an SHM system.

Rotating devices are commonly installed in power plants and factories. This study proposes a self-powered sensor node that is powered by converting the vibration energy of a rotating device into electrical energy. The self-powered sensor consists of a piezoelectric harvester for self-power generation, a rectifier circuit to rectify the AC signal, a sensor unit for measuring the vibration frequency, and a circuit to control the light emitting diode (LED) lighting. The frequency of the vibration source was measured using a piezoelectric-cantilever-type vibration frequency sensor. A green LED was illuminated when the measured frequency was within the normal range. The power generated by the piezoelectric harvester was determined, and the LED operation was assessed in terms of the vibration frequency. The piezoelectric harvester was found to generate a power of 3.061 mW or greater at a vibration acceleration of 1.2 g ($1g=9.8m/s^2$) and vibration frequencies between 117 and 123 Hz. Notably, the power generated was 4.099 mW at 122 Hz. As such, our self-powered sensor node can be used as a module for monitoring rotating devices, because it can convert vibration energy into electrical energy when installed on rotating devices such as air compressors.

A full-polarimetric scatterometer(HPS: Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) for X-band is designed, fabricated, and verified using the theoretically well-known point-targets in this paper. The X-band full-polarimetric scatterometer consists of an OMT(Orthogonal-Mode Transducer)+horn antenna, the angle control part for the OMT+horn antenna, a transmitter/receiver with a network analyzer and a frequency-conversion circuitry, and a movable support of these parts. We use an inclinometer sensor to control the vertical and horizontal incidence angles. The full polarimetric data can be obtained because of the polarization switches and the OMT. The accuracy of the scatterometer system is verified by measuring the polarimetric RCS(Radar Cross Section) of one of the theoretically well-known point-targets, i.e., a corner reflector.

The IEEE 1451.4 standards defines an architectural model for interfacing smart transducers for sensors & actuators. This standard allows analogue transducers to communicate their identification and calibration data in a digital format. A digital format is called TEDS(transducer electronic data sheet). However, the standard template of IEEE 1451.4 TEDS do not supports gas sensors to use in electronic nose system such as may sensors. In this paper, a solution to standardize sensors for electronic nose systems is presented.
Using transmission-line equivalent circuit based on cross-field model for an interdigital acoustic wave transducer, an efficient simulation technique of SAW filters by SPICE is proposed. Propagation of surface acoustic wave is modeled as transmission line so that frequency-dependent circuit elements are not needed in the equivalent circuit of an interdigital transducer. Because the equivalent circuits for frequency-dependent circuit elements are not derived approximately, and a small number of circuit elements are used in the equivalent circuit for filters, simulation time is much reduced. The utility of the proposed technique is demonstrated through simulation for the characteristics of SAW filters such as insertion loss, input admittance, passband ripple, and harmonic frequency response.

Dynamic pressure transducer needs to be flush-mounted on hardware due to frequency response characteristics of pressure transmission system. However, it is sometimes necessary to be mounted in recessed configuration due to insufficient space for sensor installation and for protection of sensor from thermal damage. Dynamic response characteristics should be considered due to distortion of original dynamic pressure signal in the pressure transmission system. In this study, small perturbation model and 2nd order reduced model were compared with experiments and a guideline for selecting a frequency response model was suggested.

The production of hydrogen fuel depends basically on the water electrolysis. The ultrasonic effects the decrease of the overpotential in a water electrolysis. A study on the overpotential which activates the hydrogen production is the core to elevate the hydrogen production efficiency on the principle. A pressure sensor system by a new idea is developed and applied. Solutions are 4 kinds of KOH concentration such as 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%. Two frequency bands of the ultrasonic transducer are 28kHz and 2MHz. The directions of ultrasonic forcing are the vertical direction and the horizontal direction. The temperatures are two states, i.e., no constant and constant. Experiments are carried out sequentially in order in three cases of no ultrasonic forcing, ultrasonic forcing, and ultrasonic discontinution. In results, it is clarified that the ultrasonic effects the decrease of overpotential to elevate the efficiency of hydrogen production.

It is essential for health monitoring of a cable-stayed bridge to provide more accurate and enough information from the sensors. In experimental modal testing, the chosen measurement locations and the number of measurements have a major influence on the quality of the results. The choice is often difficult for complex structures like a cable-stayed bridge. It is extremely important a cable-stayed bridge to minimize the number of sensing operations required to monitor the structural system. In order to obtain the desired accuracy for the structural test, several issues must take into consideration. Two important issues are the number and location of response sensors. There are usually several alternative locations where different sensors can be located. On the other hand, the number of sensors might be limited due to economic constraints. Therefore, techniques such as methodologies, algorithms etc., which address the issue of limited instrumentation and its effects on resolution and accuracy in health monitoring systems are paramount to a damage diagnosis approach. This paper discusses an optimum sensor placement criterion suitable to the identification of structural damage for continuous health monitoring. A Kinetic Energy optimization technique and an Effective Independence Method are analyzed and numerical and theoretical issues are addressed for a cable-stayed bridge. Its application to a cable-stayed bridge is discussed to optimize the sensor placement for identification and control purposes.

In this study, an ultrasonic level limit sensor with a new structure utilizing the acoustic impedance matching is proposed to be able to check it out a change of water-level. 2 PZT resonators with the same property are bonded directly on the polyethylene plate. One resonator is for transmitter as an ultrasonic transducer, the other one is for receiver. In this case, a polyethylene plate will operate as an acoustic guider to transmit a transverse wave between 2 PZT resonators in air. While in the water, a polyethylene plate having a similar acoustic impedance with the water will be emitted an acoustic energy into the water as a longitudinal wave. According to this mechanism, there was a wide difference of acoustic signal output between underwater and in air. As a summary, this proposed level limit sensor could be used as a strong candidate with low cost and more stable one.

In this study, the tire road friction estimation(TRFE) algorithm for controlling the rear wheel driving force of a 4WD vehicle during acceleration is developed using a standard sensor in an ordinary 4WD passenger car and a speed sensor. The algorithm is constructed for the wheel shaft torque, longitudinal tire force, vertical tire force and maximum tire road friction estimation. The estimation results of shaft torque and tire force were validated using a torque sensor and wheel force transducer. In the algorithm, the current road friction is defined as the proportion calculated between longitudinal and vertical tire force. Slip slop methods using current road friction and slip ratio are applied to estimate the road friction coefficient. Based on this study's results, the traction performance, fuel consumption and drive shaft strength performance of a 4WD vehicle are improved by applying the tire road friction estimation algorithm.
