An asset tracking using wireless sensor network is concerned with geographical locations of sensor nodes. The limited size of sensor nodes makes them attractable for tracking service, at the same time their size causes power restrictions, limited computation power, and storage restrictions. Due to such constrained capabilities, the wireless sensor network basically assumes the failure of sensor nodes. This causes a set of concerns in designing asset tracking system on wireless sensor network and one of the most critical factors is location uncertainty of sensor nodes. In this paper, we classify the location uncertainty problem in asset tracking system into following cases. First, sensor node isn't read at all because of sensor node failure, leading to misunderstanding that asset is not present. Second, incorrect location is read due to interference of RSSI, providing unreliable location of asset. We implemented and installed our asset tracking system in a real environment and continuously monitored the status of asset and measured error rate of location of sensor nodes. We present experimental results that demonstrate the location uncertainty problem in asset tracking system using wireless sensor network.

In this paper, we propose a new target tracking filter architecture using active and passive sensors in underwater environment. A passive sensor for target tracking needs a bearing measurement of target. And target tracking filter for using passive sensor has the observability problem. On the other hand, an active sensor does not have the problem associated with system observability problem because an active sensor uses bearing and range measurement. In this paper, the tracking filter algorithm that could be used in the active and passive sensor system is proposed to analyze maneuvering target and to improve target tracking performance. The proposed tracking filter algorithm is tested by a series of computer simulation runs and the results are analyzed and compared with existing algorithm.

Sun tracking system is the most important subsystem in parabolic dish type solar thermal power plant, since it determines the amount of thermal energy to be collected, thus affects the efficiency of solar thermal power plant most significantly. Various types of sun tracking systems are currently used. Among them, use of photo sensors to located the sun(which is called sensor type) and use of astronomical algorithm to compute the sun position(which is called program type) are two of the mostly used methods. Recently some uses CCD sensor, like CCD camera, which is called image processing type sun tracking system. This work is concerned with the analysis of sun tracking performance of various types of sun tracking systems currently used in the parabolic dish type solar thermal power plant. We first developed a sun tracking error measurement system. Then, we evaluate the performance of five different types of sun tracking systems, sensor type, program type, hybrid type(use of sensor and computed sun position simultaneously), tracking error compensated program type and image processing type. Experimentally obtained data shows that the tracking error compensated program type sun tracking system is very effective and could provide a good sun tracking performance. Also the data obtained shows that the performance of sensor type sun tracking system is being affected by the cloud significantly, while the performance of a program type sun tracking system is being affected by the sun tracking system's mechanical and installation errors very much. Finally image processing type sun tracking system can provide accurate sun tracking performance, but costs more and requires more computational time.

There are many types of seam tracking methods actually used in industrial spot. Lately, Non-contact sensor technics are mostly used because non-contact sensor has more advantage than contact sensor in many parts. This paper also concerned about fiber sensor a kind of non-contact sensor. X-Y robot and fiber sensor scan the seam tracking to be weld. After scanning, X-Y robot moves the first working point of being scanned and welding starts automatically. It makes an experiment on some types of Seam tracking like straight line tracking, leaned line tracking and curved line tracking to confirm how well the fibers sensor tracks the seam pass to be weld. And the seam pass that had been tracked was welded by inverter $CO_2$ voiding machine.

The performance of a tracking system is greatly increased if multiple types of sensors are combined to achieve the objective of the tracking instead of relying on single type of sensor. To conduct the multi-modal tracking, we have previously developed a multi-modal sensor-based tracking model where acoustic sensors mainly track the objects and visual sensors compensate the tracking errors [1]. In this paper, we find a network synchronization problem appearing in the developed tracking system. The problem is caused by the different location and traffic characteristics of multi-modal sensors and non-synchronized arrival of the captured sensor data at a processing server. To effectively deliver the sensor data, we propose a time-based packet aggregation algorithm where the acoustic sensor data are aggregated based on the sampling time and sent to the server. The delivered acoustic sensor data is then compensated by visual images to correct the tracking errors and such a compensation process improves the tracking accuracy in ideal case. However, in real situations, the tracking improvement from visual compensation can be severely degraded due to the aforementioned network synchronization problem, the impact of which is analyzed by simulations in this paper. To resolve the network synchronization problem, we differentiate the service level of sensor traffic based on Weight Round Robin (WRR) scheduling at the routers. The weighting factor allocated to each queue is calculated by a proposed Delay-based Weight Allocation (DWA) algorithm. From the simulations, we show the traffic differentiation model can mitigate the non-synchronization of sensor data. Finally, we analyze expected traffic behaviors of the tracking system in terms of acoustic sampling interval and visual image size.

In wireless sensor network (WSN) environments, environmental noises are generated by, for example, small passing animals, crickets chirping or foliage blowing and will interfere target detection if the noises are higher than the sensor threshold value. For accurate tracking by acoustic WSNs, these environmental noises should be filtered out before initiating track. This paper presents the effect of environmental noises on target tracking and proposes a new algorithm for the noise mitigation in acoustic WSNs. We find that our noise mitigation algorithm works well even for targets with sensing range shorter than the sensor separation as well as with longer sensing ranges. It is also found that noise duration at each sensor affects the performance of the algorithm. A detection algorithm is also presented to account for the Doppler effect which is an important consideration for tracking higher-speed ground targets. For tracking, we use the weighted sensor position centroid to represent the target position measurement and use the Kalman filter (KF) for tracking.
The weld seam tracking system for arc welding process uses various kinds of sensors such as arc sensor, vision sensor, laser displacement sensor and so on. Among the variety of sensors available, electro-magnetic sensor is one of the most useful methods especially in sheet metal butt-joint arc welding, primarily because it is hardly affected by the intense arc light and fume generated during the welding process, and also by the surface condition of weldments. In this study, a dual-electromagnetic sensor, which utilizes the induced current variation in the sensing coil due to the eddy current variation of the metal near the sensor, was developed for arc welding of sheet metal I-butt joints. The dual-electromagnetic sensor thus detects the offset displacement of weld line from the center of sensor head even though there's no clearance in the joint. A set of design variables of the sensor was determined far the maximum sensing capability through the repeated experiments. Seam tracking is performed by correcting the position of sensor to the amount of offset displacement every sampling period. From the experimental results, the developed sensor showed the excellent capability of weld seam detection when the sensor to workpiece distance is near less than 5 ㎜, and it was revealed that the system has excellent seam tracking ability for the I-butt joint of sheet metal.

This paper proposes a novel tracking algorithm for efficiency improvement of photovoltaic(PV) system using sensor method. PV system of sensor method is exactly impossible to track a sun position when insolation is low or rapidly changed by the clouds and fogs. Also, in this case, tracking device is occurred energy consumption by unnecessary operating. This statement of reason, real power of PV system is not increased than fixed PV system in specified location. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel tracking algorithm considered insolation for efficiency improvement of PV system using sensor method. And this paper analyzes the generation volume and proves the validity of proposed algorithm as compared with the conventional PV tracking system using sensor method.
In this study, a magnetic sensor to make use of eddy current was developed to detect the weld seam of butt joint in the sheet metal arc welding. This system consist of the sensor device for detecting the weld line, the servo control device for driving the weld torch movement and the control unit. A signal processing was applied to smooth the output signal of the sensor. The weld joint was determined by using a 1st order differential method. To improve tracking accuracy of the system, moving average method which has an effect of proportional and weighted integral control was applied to a series of the weld joint positions obtained above. The weld line for tracking was generated by using data regeneration algorithm. Based on these results, each servo motor was controlled by pulse generator. From experimental results, it was revealed that this system has excellent detecting ability for weld line and seam tracking ability.
