Operational Availability Improvement through Online Monitoring and Advice For Emergency Diesel Generator

  • This research broadens the prime concern of nuclear power plant operations from safe performance to both economic and safe performance. First emergency diesel generator is identified as one of main contributors for the lost plant availability through the review of plants forced outage records. The framework of an integrated architecture for performing modern on-line condition for operational availability improvement is configured in this work. For the development of the comprehensive sensor networks for complex target systems, an integrated methodology incorporating a structural hierarchy, a functional hierarchy, and a fault-system matrix is formulated. The second part of our research is development of intelligent diagnosis and maintenance advisory system, which employs Bayesian Belief networks (BBNs) as a high level reasoning tool incorporating inherent uncertainty use in probabilistic inference. Our prototype diagnosis algorithms are represented explicitly through topological symbols and links between them in a causal direction. As new evidence from sensor network development is entered into the model especially, our advisory of system provides operational advice concerning both availability and safety, so that the operator is able to determine the likely modes, diagnose the system state, locate root causes, and take the most advantageous action.   • This paper proposes an ontology-based context-aware home healthcare platform employing environmental factors obtained from home. The proposed platform manages the health of home residents, and notifies relatives or a medical team of critical condition through context-awareness based on home ontology by using information sensed from various sensors. The ontology definition of context-awareness from the sensed information provides technically more precise decision for us. Therefore the platform can be aware of the health state of residents and environment by reasoning exactly from data gathered from various sensors and heterogeneous devices. The platform also can individually provide the customized service for users by setting priority for critical status that can be occurred in the health state of residents.

  • A new model for the construction of a sonar map in a specular environment has been developed ad implemented. In a real world where most of the object surfaces are specular ones, a sonar sensor suffers from a multipath effect which results in a wrong interpretation of an objects's location. To reduce this effect and hence to construct a reliable map of a robot's surroundings, a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian reasoning is adopted to both evaluation of object orientations and estimation of an occupancy probability of a cell by an object. The usefulness of this approach is illustrated with the results produced by our mobile robot equipped with ultrasonic sensors.

  • Incomplete knowledge instances may be registered from misidentifications of sensors, such as vision sensor. In previous study, we proposed robust object instance registration method to robot centered knowledge framework to guarantee the consistency of the registered knowledge. In real environment, a persistent update is necessary due to the objects can be moved dynamically. In this paper, we propose the way to update robot knowledge continually using the registration method. Our experiment in this paper shows that sound and complete knowledge can be registered and updated by the proposed method, even under imperfect sensing data.

  • Recently, a smart space with Ubiquitous Environment is expanding rapidly due to the development of Ubiquitous Sensor Network. Therefore, more appropriate and intelligent services of the context awareness system is being required. The previous context awareness system can provide a service to the user through the inference only on the current situation. But, it does not handle certain situation properly when the system provides abnormal result. Also it does not have any proper method of generating reliable semantic data from sensed raw data. In this paper, we are trying to solve the problems as the following approaches. First, the system recognizes abnormal result and corrects it by learning feedback from the user. Second, we suggest a method of converting sensed data into more reliable semantic data. Third, we build the system based on an Ontological context model that is capable of interoperability and reusability. Therefore, the context awareness system of our study can enhance the previous system that can generate more reliable context data, can provide more effective inference method, and can provide more intelligent system structure.

  • A design method that can easily construct intelligent patient monitoring systems is proposed. To achieve the design method, the SES/MB concept and a discrete event-based logic control formalism based on a set theory is introduced. In this control paradigm the controller expects to receive confirming sensor responses to its control commands within definite time windows determined by DEVS model of the system under control. Because data to be used for rule-based symbolic reasoning are to be abstracted, several AI methods are applied the processes. These methods are applied to intelligent patient monitoring systems so that they facilitate transformation from low level raw data to high level linguistic data. Model-based system representations have advantages of reusability, extensibility, flexsibility, independent testability and encapsulation.

  • With the development of ubiquitous computing technology, the number of HCI applications is increasing, where they utilize various contexts to provide adaptive services to users according to the change of contexts, and also, technologies for collecting various sensor data and generating integrated contexts get more important. However, the research on the collection and integration of multi-sensor data is not sufficient when we consider the various utilization areas of the integrated contexts. In particular, they have some problems to be solved such as duplication of the context data and the high system load. In this paper, we propose an integrated context generation scheme based on Ant Colony System. Proposed scheme generates the context data as a form of XML and avoids the generation of unnecessary context information by detecting the repeated sensor information based on the ant colony system. As a result of detections, we reduce wasted resources and repositories when the integrated context is created. We also reduce the overhead for reasoning.

  • The advancement in ubiquitous healthcare specifically in preventive healthcare can lead to longer life expectancy especially for the elderly patients. To aid in preventing premature loss of lives as well as lengthening life span, this research aims to implement the use of mobile and wireless sensor technology to improve the quality of life and lengthen life expectancy. The threats to privacy and security have received increasing attention as ubiquitous healthcare applications over the Internet become more prevalent, mobile and universal. Therefore, we propose Context-aware Service of U-Healthcare Application based Knowledge using Ontology in secure health information exchange. This research also applies ontology in secure information exchange to support knowledge base, context modeling, and context reasoning by applying the general application areas for ontologies to the domain of context in ubiquitous computing environments. This paper also demonstrates how knowledge base, context technologies, and mobile web services can help enhance the quality of services in preventive ubiquitous healthcare to elderly patients.

  • In this paper, we proposed a fuzzy controller and algorithm for efficiently obstacle avoidance in unknown space. The ultrasonic sensor is used for position and distance recognition of obstacle, and fuzzy controller is used for left and right wheels angular velocity control. The fuzzification is used singleton method and the control rule is each wheel forty-nine. The fuzzy inference is used simplified Mamdani's reasoning and defuzzification is used SCOG(Simplified Center Of Gravity). The computer simulation based on mobile robot modelling was performed for the capacity of fuzzy controller and the really applicable possibility revaluation of the proposed avoidance algorithm and fuzzy controller. As a result, mobile robot was exactly reached in target and it avoided obstacle efficiently.

Design of Case-based Intelligent Wheelchair Monitoring System

  • In this paper, it is aim to implement a wheelchair monitoring system that provides users with customized medical services easily in everyday life, together with mobility guarantee, which is the most basic requirement of the elderly and disabled persons with physical disabilities. The case-based intelligent wheelchair monitoring system proposed in this study is based on a case-based k-NN algorithm, which implements a system for constructing and inferring examples of various biometric and environmental information of wheelchair users as a knowledge database and a monitoring interface for wheelchair users. In order to confirm the usefulness of the case-based k-NN algorithm, the SVM algorithm showed an average accuracy of 84.2% and the average accuracy of the proposed case-based k-NN algorithm was 86.2% And showed higher performance in terms of accuracy. The system implemented in this paper has the advantage of measuring biometric information and data communication regardless of time and place and it can provide customized service of wheelchair user through user friendly interface.
