This paper presents a sensor location decision making method respect to Container-Grown Seedlings in view of precision agriculture (PA) when sensors involved in tree container measure received signal strength (RSS) or time-of-arrival (TOA) between themselves and neighboring sensors. A small fraction of sensors in the container-grown seedlings system have a known location, whereas the remaining locations must be estimated. We derive Rao-Cramer bounds and maximum-likelihood estimators under Gaussian and log-normal models for the TOA and RSS measurements, respectively.

One of the key technical elements of wireless sensor network (WSN) is location management of sensor nodes. Typical node location management methods use GPS, ultrasonic sensors or RSSI. In this paper we propose a new location management method which adopts regression analysis of RSSI measurement to improve the accuracy of sensor node position estimation. We also evaluated the performance of proposed method by comparing the experimental results with existing scheme. According to the results, our proposed method showed better accuracy than existing location management scheme using RSSI and Firis' equation.
The LBS(Location Based Service) technology plays an important role in reducing wastes of time, losses of human lives and economic losses by detecting the user's location in order by suggesting the optimal evacuation route of the users in case of safety accidents. We developed an algorithm to estimate indoor location, movement path and indoor location changes of smart phone users based on the built-in sensors of smartphones and the dead-reckoning algorithm for pedestrians without a connection with smart devices such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Furthermore, seven different indoor movement scenarios were selected to measure the performance of this algorithm and the accuracy of the indoor location estimation was measured by comparing the actual movement route and the algorithm results of the experimenter(pedestrian) who performed the indoor movement. The experimental result showed that this algorithm had an average accuracy of 95.0%.
Delamination is the most common failure mode in layered composite materials. The author have found that the electrical potential change (EPC) technique using response surfaces method is very effective in assessment delamination in basalt fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate composite pipe by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS). In the present study, the effect of the electrodes number on the method is investigated using FEM analyses for delamination location/size detection by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. Three cases of electrodes number are analyzed here are eight, twelve and sixteen electrodes, afterwards, the delamination is introduced into between the three layers [$0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$]s laminates pipe, split into eight, twelve and sixteen scenarios for cases of eight, twelve and sixteen electrodes respectively. Response surfaces are adopted as a tool for solving inverse problems to estimate delamination location/size from the measured EPC of all segments between electrodes. As a result, it was revealed that the estimation performances of delamination location/size depends on the electrodes number. For ECS, the high number of electrodes is required to obtain high estimation performances of delamination location/size. The illustrated results are in excellent agreement with solutions available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.
This paper introduces a study to estimate the user altitude in need of rescue in an emergency. The altitude is estimated by using the barometric pressure sensor embedded in the smartphone. Compared to GPS, which is degraded in urban or indoor environments, it has the advantage of not having spatial restrictions. With the endless development of smartphone hardware, it is possible to estimate the absolute altitude using the measured value if only the bias of the embedded barometric pressure sensor is applied. The altitude information of the person in need of rescue in an emergency is a great help in reducing rescue time. Since time is tight, we propose online calibration that provides the barometric pressure sensor bias used for altitude estimation through database. Furthermore, experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of the barometric pressure sensor, which is greatly affected by wind. At the end, the altitude estimation performance was confirmed through an actual field tests in various floors in the building.
In this paper, an estimation system of vehicle position and orientation on magnetic lane, which is a parameter of the steering controller for automated lane following is described. To verify that the magnetic dipole model could be applied to a magnetic unit paved in roadway, the analysis of the model is compared with the data of 3-axis magnetic field measured experimentally. The sensor location could be estimated by analysis of the model based on experimental data. For the magnetic lane model merged magnetic unit, the relation of sensor location and magnetic field is acquired experimentally. The proposed estimation of vehicle position and orientation is adopted to automated lane following by computer simulation.

The torque is an important measure that represents the performance of a particular engine. Furthermore the information of engine torque can be used as a primary feedback parameter in modem engine management system. In this paper, a methodology is proposed for torque estimation of SI-engine. Since the proposed method uses cylinder pressure sensor, the torque can be estimated in a simple manner. The indicated torque is estimated from the peak pressure and its location, and the load torque is observed by the state observer based on the estimated indicated torque. The proposed method is accurate and robust against the variations that affect the torque production such as spark timing, mass air flow and others. This torque estimation method may be an alternative solution to the use of engine torque maps in a modem torque-based engine management system.
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), thousands of sensors are often deployed in a hostile environment. In such an environment, WSNs can be applied to various applications by using the absolute or relative location information of the sensors. Until now, the time-of-arrival (TOA) based localization method has been considered most accurate. In the TOA method, however, inaccuracy in distance estimation is caused by clock drift and clock skew between sensor nodes. To solve this problem, several numbers of periodic time synchronization methods were suggested while these methods introduced overheads to the packet traffic. In this paper, we propose a new localization method based on multiple round-trip times (RTOA) of a signal which gives more accurate distance and location estimation even in the presence of clock skew between sensor nodes. Our experimental results show that the Proposed RTOA method gives up to 93% more accurate location estimation.

Over a wireless sensor network (WSN), accurate localization of sensor nodes is an important factor in enhancing the association between location information and sensory data. There are many research works on the development of a localization algorithm over three-dimensional (3D) space. Recently, the complexity-reduced 3D trilateration localization approach (COLA), simplifying the 3D computational overhead to 2D trilateration, was proposed. The method provides proper accuracy of location, but it has a high computational cost. Considering practical applications over resource constrained devices, it is necessary to strike a balance between accuracy and computational cost. In this paper, we present a novel 3D localization method based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values of four anchor nodes, which are deployed in the initial setup process. This method provides accurate location estimation results with a reduced computational cost and a smaller number of anchor nodes.
With the increasing demand for the development of human pose estimation, such as human-computer interaction and human activity recognition, there have been numerous approaches to detect the 2D poses of people in images more efficiently. Despite many years of human pose estimation research, the estimation of human poses with images remains difficult to produce satisfactory results. In this study, we propose a robust 2D human body pose estimation method using an RGB camera sensor. Our pose estimation method is efficient and cost-effective since the use of RGB camera sensor is economically beneficial compared to more commonly used high-priced sensors. For the estimation of upper-body joint positions, semantic segmentation with a fully convolutional network was exploited. From acquired RGB images, joint heatmaps accurately estimate the coordinates of the location of each joint. The network architecture was designed to learn and detect the locations of joints via the sequential prediction processing method. Our proposed method was tested and validated for efficient estimation of the human upper-body pose. The obtained results reveal the potential of a simple RGB camera sensor for human pose estimation applications.
