  • In this paper, we consider a novel spectrum sensing system in which firstly, the fusion center (FC) senses and makes the own decision then if its sensing result is not useful for achieving the final decision, the local observations from the cognitive users (CUs) will be required. Moreover, in case that FC needs the results from CUs, we will choose only CU having the highest collected energy to send its local decision to FC. Based on this selecting method, the number of sensing bits can be reduced; hence, we can save the power and the bandwidth for reporting stage in the cognitive radio network (CRN). The mathematical analysis of the key metrics of the sensing schemes (probability of detection, false alarm, e.g.) will be investigated and confirmed by the Monte-Carlo simulation results to show the performance enhancement of the proposed schemes.

  • Image enhancement algorithm aims to improve the visual quality of low contrast image through eliminating the noise and blurring, increasing contrast, and raising detail. This paper proposes adaptive dynamic range linear stretching(ADRLS) algorithm based on advantages of existing methods. ADRLS method is focused on generating sub-histograms of the majority through partitioning the histogram of input image and applying adaptive scale factor. Generated sub-histograms are finally applied by linear stretching(LS) algorithm. In order to validate proposed method, it is compared with LS and histogram equalization(HE) algorithm generally used. As the result, the proposed method show to improve contrast of input image and to preserve distinct characteristics of histogram by controlling excessive change of brightness.

  • The NO gas sensing properties of ZnO-carbon nanotube (ZnO-CNT) composites fabricated by the coaxial coating of single-walled CNTs with ZnO were investigated using pulsed laser deposition. Upon examination, the morphology and crystallinity of the ZnO-CNT composites showed that CNTs were uniformly coated with polycrystalline ZnO with a grain size as small as 5-10 nm. Gas sensing measurements clearly indicated a remarkable enhancement of the sensitivity of ZnO-CNT composites for NO gas compared to that of ZnO films while maintaining the strong sensing stability of the composites, properties that CNT-based sensing materials do not have. The enhanced gas sensing properties of the ZnO-CNT composites are attributed to an increase in the surface adsorption area of the ZnO layer via the coating by CNTs of a high surface-to-volume ratio structure. These results suggest that the ZnO-CNT composite is a promising template for novel solid-state semiconducting gas sensors.

  • Since 1988, pine wilt disease has spread over rapidly in Korea. It is not easy to detect the damaged pine trees by pine wilt disease from conventional remote sensing skills. Thus, many possibilities were investigated to detect the damaged pines using various kinds of remote sensing data including high spatial resolution satellite image of 2000/2003 IKONOS and 2005 QuickBird, aerial photos, and digital airborne data, too. Time series of B&W aerial photos at the scale of 1:6,000 were used to validate the results. A local maximum filtering was adapted to determine whether the damaged pines could be detected or not at the tree level from high resolution satellite images, and to locate the damaged trees. Several enhancement methods such as NDVI and image transformations were examined to find out the optimal detection method. Considering the mean crown radius of pine trees, local maximum filter with 3 pixels in radius was adapted to detect the damaged trees on IKONOS image. CIR images of 50 cm resolution were taken by PKNU-3(REDLAKE MS4000) sensor. The simulated CIR images with resolutions of 1 m, 2 m, and 4 m were generated to test the possibility of tree detection both in a stereo and a single mode. In conclusion, in order to detect the pine tree damaged by pine wilt disease at a tree level from satellite image, a spatial resolution might be less than 1 m in a single mode and/or 1 m in a stereo mode.

  • In the event of a disaster accident at sea, the scale of damage will vary due to weather effects such as wind, currents, and tidal waves, and it is obligatory to minimize the scale of damage by establishing appropriate control plans through quick on-site identification. In particular, it is difficult to identify pollutants that exist in a thin film at sea surface due to their relatively low viscosity and surface tension among pollutants discharged into the sea. Therefore, this study aims to develop an algorithm to detect suspended pollutants on the sea surface in RGB images using imaging equipment that can be easily used in the field, and to evaluate the performance of the algorithm using input data obtained from actual waters. The developed algorithm uses image enhancement techniques to improve the contrast between the intensity values of pollutants and general sea surfaces, and through histogram analysis, the background threshold is found, suspended solids other than pollutants are removed, and finally pollutants are classified. In this study, a real sea test using substitute materials was performed to evaluate the performance of the developed algorithm, and most of the suspended marine pollutants were detected, but the false detection area occurred in places with strong waves. However, the detection results are about three times better than the detection method using a single threshold in the existing algorithm. Through the results of this R&D, it is expected to be useful for on-site control response activities by detecting suspended marine pollutants that were difficult to identify with the naked eye at existing sites.

  • Novel fluorescent anion chemosensors based on anthracene-isothiouronium derivatives were synthesized. Isomerism due to the intramolecular mobility in these isothiouronium salts was detected by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The effect of the substituent, temperature and solvent on the isomerism was also examined. The anthracene-isothiouronium sensor showed significant fluorescent enhancement upon the addition of various anions such as fluoride, acetate, and dihydrogen phosphate, even in the presence of water.

  • Graphene has been widely considered a promising candidate for high-quality chemical sensors, owing to its outstanding characteristics, such as sensitive gas adsorption at room temperature, high conductivity, high flexibility, and high transparency. However, the main drawback of a graphene-based gas sensor is the necessity for external heaters due to its slow response, incomplete recovery, and low selectivity at room temperature. Conventional heating devices have limitations such as large volume, thermal safety issues, and high power consumption. Moreover, metal-based heating systems cannot be applied to transparent and flexible devices. Thus, to solve this problem, a method of supplying the thermal energy necessary for gas sensing via the self-heating of graphene by utilizing its high carrier mobility has been studied. Herein, we provide a brief review of recent studies on self-activated graphene-based gas sensors. This review also describes various strategies for the self-activation of graphene sensors and the enhancement of their sensing properties.

The proposed algorithm finds out the image cell from the sensor and process them by the limited memory configuration. The evaluation of the method is done by the designed hardware system. The experimental results are capable of improving contrast per channel and of sensing equalized image quality on an edge of image.

  • This pper describes a digital sensorless drive of permanent magnet brushless DC motors. In order to detect in real time the rotor positions of which Emf becomes zero, terminal voltages are sampled during PWM duty cycle. This method generates detection error in indirect sensed position, which is the harmonic component of PWM frequency. In this paper, the drive adopted Butterworth low pass filter for rejection of the sensing error and for accurate estimation of commutation time. Analytical design process of the digital filter is proposed and the experimental results show that the performance of the proposed sensorless drive is superior to that of the sensorless drives without filterint.

  • This paper describes the synthesis and water sensing properties of a fluorescent photoinduced electron transfer (PET) sensor (5) with an extended operating sensing range. The 1,8-naphthalimide derivative (5) attached with a piperazine group and a carboxylic group was synthesized and applied as a fluorescent water sensor in water-miscible organic solvents. The fluorescence intensity of the dye 5 increased with increasing water content up to 80% (v/v) and the fluorescence intensities were enhanced 45-, 67- and 122-fold in aqueous EtOH, DMF and DMSO solutions, respectively. In aqueous acetone solution, the enhancement of the fluorescence intensities was somewhat lower (30-fold) but the response range was wider (0-90%, v/v).
