  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute produces mosaic images of the Korean Peninsula every year to promote the use of satellite images and provides them to users in the public sector. However, since the pan-sharpening and color balancing methodologies are applied during the mosaic image processing, the original spectral information is distorted. In addition, there is a limit to analyze using mosaic images as mosaic images provide only Red, Green and Blue bands excluding Near Infrared (NIR) band. Therefore, in order to compensate for these limitations, this study applied the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique and indices extracted from R, G, B bands together for image classification and compared the classification results. As a result of the analysis, the accuracy of the mosaic image classification result was about 67.51%, while the accuracy of the image classification result using both PCA and RGB indices was about 75.86%, confirming that the accuracy of the image classification result can be improved. As a result of comparing the PCA and the RGB indices, the accuracy of the image classification result was about 64.10% and 74.05% respectively. Through this, it was confirmed that the classification accuracy using the RGB indices was higher among the two techniques, and implications were derived that it was important to use high quality reference or supplementary data. In the future, additional indices and techniques are needed to improve the classification and analysis results of mosaic images, and related research is expected to increase the utilization of images that provide only R, G, B or limited spectral information.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery are being assessed for analyzing within field spatial variability for agricultural precision management, because UAV imagery may be acquired quickly during critical periods of rapid crop growth. This study refers to the derivation of barley and wheat growth prediction equation by using UAV derived vegetation index. UAV imagery was taken on the test plots six times from late February to late June during the barley and wheat growing season. The field spectral reflectance during growing period for the 5 variety (Keunal-bori, Huinchalssal-bori, Saechalssal-bori, Keumkang and Jopum) were measured using ground spectroradiometer and three growth parameters, including plant height, shoot dry weight and number of tiller were investigated for each ground survey. Among the 6 Vegetation Indices (VI), the RVI, NDVI, NGRDI and GLI between measured and image derived showed high relationship with the coefficient of determination respectively. Using the field investigation data, the vegetation indices regression curves were derived, and the growth parameters were tried to compare with the VIs value.

  • The feature extraction using remotely sensed imagery has been recognized one of the important tasks in remote sensing applications. As the high-resolution imagery are widely used to the engineering purposes, need of more accurate feature information also is increasing. Especially, in case of the automatic extraction of linear feature such as road using mid or low-resolution imagery, several techniques was developed and applied in the mean time. But quantitatively comparative analysis of techniques and case studies for high-resolution imagery is rare. In this study, we implemented a computer program to perform and compare GDPA (Gradient Direction Profile Analysis) algorithm and Hough transformation. Also the results of applying two techniques to some images were compared with road centerline layers and boundary layers of digital map and presented. For quantitative comparison, the ranking method using commission error and omission error was used. As results, Hough transform had high accuracy over 20% on the average. As for execution speed, GDPA shows main advantage over Hough transform. But the accuracy was not remarkable difference between GDPA and Hough transform, when the noise removal was app]ied to the result of GDPA. In conclusion, it is expected that GDPA have more advantage than Hough transform in the application side.

  • If chlorophyll-a is estimated through ocean color remote sensing, it is able to understand the global distribution of phytoplankton and primary production. However, there are missing data in the ocean color observed from the satellites due to the clouds or weather conditions. In thisstudy, the missing data of the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) chlorophyll-a product wasreconstructed by using DINEOF (Data INterpolation Empirical Orthogonal Functions). DINEOF reconstructs the missing data based on spatio-temporal data, and the accuracy was cross-verified by removing a part of the GOCI chlorophyll-a image and comparing it with the reconstructed image. In the study area, the optimal EOF (Empirical Orthogonal Functions) mode for DINEOF wasin 10-13. The temporal and spatialreconstructed data reflected the increasing chlorophyll-a concentration in the afternoon, and the noise of outliers was filtered. Therefore, it is expected that DINEOF is useful to reconstruct the missing images, also it is considered that it is able to use as basic data for monitoring the ocean environment.

  • Spatial data integration using multiple geo-based data sets has been regarded as one of the primary GIS application issues. As for this issue, several integration schemes have been developed as the perspectives of mathematical geology or geo-mathematics. However, research-based approaches for statistical/quantitative assessments between integrated layer and input layers are not fully considered yet. Related to this niche point, in this study, spatial data integration using multiple geoscientific data sets by known integration algorithms was primarily performed. For spatial integration by using raster-based GIS functionality, geological, geochemical, geophysical data sets, DEM-driven data sets and remotely sensed imagery data sets from the Ogdong area were utilized for geological thematic mapping related by mineral potential mapping. In addition, statistical/quantitative information extraction with respective to relationships among used data sets and/or between each data set and integrated layer was carried out, with the scope of multiple data fusion and schematic statistical assessment methodology. As for the spatial integration scheme, certainty factor (CF) estimation and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied. However, this study was not aimed at direct comparison of both methodologies; whereas, for the statistical/quantitative assessment between integrated layer and input layers, some statistical methodologies based on contingency table were focused. Especially, for the bias reduction, jackknife technique was also applied in PCA-based spatial integration. Through the statistic analyses with respect to the integration information in this case study, new information for relationships of integrated layer and input layers was extracted. In addition, influence effects of input data sets with respect to integrated layer were assessed. This kind of approach provides a decision-making information in the viewpoint of GIS and is also exploratory data analysis in conjunction with GIS and geoscientific application, especially handing spatial integration or data fusion with complex variable data sets.

  • The leaf temperature is principally regulated by the opening and closing of stomata that is sensitive to various kinds of plant physiological stress. Thus, the analysis of thermal imagery, one of remote sensing technique, will be useful to detect crop physiological condition on smart farm system and phenomics platform. However, there are few case studies using a thermal imaging camera on the agricultural application. In this study, three cases are presented: the effect of lime fertilizer on the rice, the different physiological properties of soybean under shading condition, and the screening of soybean breeds for salinity tolerance characteristic. The leaf temperature measured by thermal imaging camera on the three cases was used effectively to the physiological change and characteristics. However, the thermal imagery analysis requires considering the accuracy of measured temperature and the weather conditions that affects to the leaf temperature.

  • Existing environmental spatial information, which has been concentrated on spatial resolution, has limitations in solving realistic environmental problems that must be accompanied by physical and chemical characterization. Accordingly, there is a need for an image radar capable of identifying physical characteristics of an object regardless of weather conditions, day and night, and sunlight. Image radar is used in various fields in the United States and Europe. The next generation of medium-sized satellite No. 5 in Korea, which is under development with the aim of monitoring water disasters, is also looking for ways to expand the scope to various applications based on the existing application range. To this end, we analyzed domestic and international papers (100 works) using image radar, and reviewed KEI 2016 report, domestic papers, and foreign papers. Based on this, various environmental issues were summarized and the effects of when the image radar was used were analyzed and land cover was selected as an environmental issue. In the future, we will embody the technology to improve the accuracy of the land cover map, which is the environmental issue selected in this study, and build the foundation system for the stable use of the land cover map.

  • With the development of GeoWeb technology, 2D/3D spatial information services through the web are also has been used increasingly in the application of disaster management. This paper is suggested to construct a web-based 3D geo-spatial information mapping platform to visualize various spatial information collected at the disaster site in a web environment. This paper is presented a web-based geo-spatial information mapping service plan for the various types of 2D/3D spatial data and large-volume LiDAR point cloud data collected at the disaster accident site using HTML5/WebGL, web development standard technology and open source. Firstly, the collected disaster site survey 2D data is constructed as a spatial DB using GeoServer's WMS service and PostGIS provided an open source and rendered in a web environment. Secondly, in order to efficiently render large-capacity 3D point cloud data in a web environment, a Potree algorithm is applied to simplifies point cloud data into 2D tiles using a multi-resolution octree structure. Lastly, OpenLayers3 based 3D web mapping pilot system is developed for web visualization of 2D/3D spatial information by implementing basic and application functions for controlling and measuring 3D maps with Graphic User Interface (GUI). For the further research, it is expected that various 2D survey data and various spatial image information of a disaster site can be used for scientific investigation and analysis of disaster accidents by overlaying and visualizing them on a built web-based 3D geo-spatial information system.

  • This research is about the inherent optical properties(IOPs) of algae which is collected from Nam-Hae for basic research of red tide remote sensing technique development. 21 kinds of red tide organisms were cultivated to investigate IOPs of them in the level of laboratory, and specific absorption coefficient of phytoplankton($a^*$) and backscattering coefficient of phytoplankton(${b_b}^*$) are estimated by using spectrophotometer. Absorption spectrums according to species appeared to range from 0.005 to 0.06 ($m^2{\cdot}mg^{-1}$), and the shapes of spectrums were also different. The range of ${b_b}^*$ appeared to be $10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-4}\;m^2{\cdot}mg^{-1}$, which had about 100 times differences between species, and the shape of spectrum have significant difference between species. These results will input as a remote sensing reflectance model input parameter from ocean color.
