In mid-August 2002, under clear summer pressure patterns, we carried out an intensive meteorological observation to examine the warming effects due to artificial constructions in a large housing complex. We set an automatic weather system(AWS) at two places in a bare soil surface within a limited development district and an asphalt surface within a large apartment residence area, respectively. As a result of observation, it became clear that the difference of the surface air(ground) temperature between the bare soil surface and its peripheral asphalt area reached about 4$^{\circ}C$(13$^{\circ}C$) at the maximum from diurnal variation of surface temperatures on AWS data. Through the heat balance analysis using measurement data, it became clear that the thermal conditions at two places are dependent on the properties of surface material. The latent heat flux over the bare soil surface reached to about 300 W/㎡, which is more than a half of net radiation during the daytime. On the other hand, it was nearly zero over the asphalt surface. Hence, the sensible heat flux over the asphalt surface was far more than that of the bare soil surface. The sensible heat flux over the asphalt surface showed about 20∼30 W/㎡ during the night. It was released from asphalt surface which have far more heat capacity than that of bare soil surface.
Accurate ocean surface fluxes with high resolution are critical for understanding a mechanism of global climate. However, it is difficult to derive those fluxes by using ocean observation data because the number of ocean observation data is extremely small and the distribution is inhomogeneous. On the other hand. satellite data are characterized by the high density, the high resolution and the homogeneity. Therefore, it can be considered that we obtain accurate ocean surface by using satellite data. Recently we constructed ocean surface data sets mainly using satellite data. The data set is named by Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observations (J-OFURO). Here, we introduce J-OFURO. The data set includes shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, and momentum flux etc. Moreover, sea surface dynamic topography data are included in the data set. Radiation data sets covers western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean because we use a Japanese geostationally satellite (GMS) to estimate radiation fluxes. On the other hand, turbulent heat fluxes are globally estimated. The constructed data sets are used and shows the effectiveness for many scientific studies.
It is very important to assess accurately the terms which are included in the heat budget equation of soil surface because they are used in the UM and miso-scale circulation modeling as well as in the micrometeorological studies. Each terms in the heat budget equation change according to the soil moisture content. So, it is necessary to specify clearly the relations between soil moisture content and these terms. Special experiment with micrometeorological measurements was executed to study these relations at Environmental Research Center of Tsukuba University, Japan. The results are as follow: 1. The soil moisture contents of 1 cm and 4 cm depth are oscillated with one day Period in drying process and the amplitude of variation of 1 cm depth is greater than that of 4 cm. 2. Increase in soil moisture contents due to precipitation result in decrease of albedo with step function. 3. Sensible heat is in reverse proportion to the soil moisture content and latent heat is in direct proportion to it. Latent heat is more sensitive than sensible heat according to the soil moisture variation. Net long wave radiation have high correlation with soil moisture. 4. Comparing with the radiative term with the flux term in wetting process due to precipitation, the energy transfer of the aero and thermodynamic flux is greater than that of the radiative heat flux.
Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) (1995-2004), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the port of Yeosu. Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during February to September, and it amounts to $205 Wm^{-2}$ in daily average value in May. During October to January, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-70 Wm^{-2}$ in minimum of daily average value in December. Short wave radiation was ranged from $167 Wm^{-2}$ in December to $300 Wm^{-2}$ in April. Long wave radiation (Sensible heat) was ranged from $27 (-14) Wm^{-2}$ in July to $90 (79) Wm^{-2}$ in December. Latent heat showed $42 Wm^{-2}$ with its minimum in July and $104 Wm^{-2}$ with its maximum in October in daily average value.

In this paper, Annual flux variations in the Boseong Tall Tower (BTT) from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed using data from three levels (2.5 m, 60 m, and 300 m). BTT was installed in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do in February 2014 and continued to conduct energy exchange observations such as CO2, sensible heat, and latent heat using the eddy covariance method until March 2023. The BTT was located in a very flat and uniform paddy field, and flux observations were conducted at four levels: 2.5 m, 60 m, 140 m, and 300 m above ground. Surface energy balance was confirmed from observed data of net radiation flux, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux. Additionally, 2.5 m height surface fluxes, which are most influenced by agricultural land, were compared with data from Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Korea Meteorological Administration to evaluate the accuracy of LDAPS flux data. The correlation coefficient between LDAPS flux data and observed values was 0.95 or higher. Excluding summer latent heat flux data, there was a general tendency for LDAPS data to be higher than observed values. The footprint areas estimated below 60 m height mainly covered agricultural land, and flux observations at 2.5 m and 60 m heights showed typical agricultural characteristics. In contrast, the footprint estimated at 300 m height did not show agricultural characteristics, indicating that observations at this height encompassed a wide range, including mountains, sea, and roads. The analysis results of long-term flux observations can contribute to understanding the energy and carbon dioxide fluxes in agricultural fields. Furthermore, these results can be utilized as essential data for validating and improving numerical models related to such fluxes.
This study examined the lake effect of the Yellow Sea which was induced by the Siberian High pressure system moving over the open waters. The development mechanism of the convective cells over the ocean was studied in detail using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. Numerical experiments consist of the control experiment (CTL) and an experiment changing the yellow sea to dry land (EXP). The CTL simulation result showed distinct high area of relative vorticity, convergence and low-level atmospheric instability than that of the EXP. The result indicates that large surface vorticity and convergence induced vertical motion and low level instability over the ocean when the arctic Siberian air mass moved south over the Yellow Sea. The sensible heat flux at the sea surface gradually decreased while latent heat flux gradually increased. At the beginning stage of air mass modification, sensible heat was the main energy source for convective cell generation. However, in the later stage, latent heat became the main energy source for the development of convective cells. In conclusion, the mechanism of the west coast heavy snowfall caused by modification of the Siberian air mass over the Yellow Sea can be explained by air-sea interaction instability in the following order: (a) cyclonic vorticity caused by diabatic heating induce Ekman pumping and convergence at the surface, (b) sensible heat at the sea surface produce convection, and (c) this leads to latent heat release, and the development of convective cells. The overall process is a manifestation of air-sea interaction and enhancement of convection from positive feedback mechanism.
We present a retrieval scheme for the remote sensing of evapotranspiration (ET) over rice paddy. To perform the retrieval, high-resolution airborne imagery of multi-spectral visible and thermal infrared data, and ground-based meteorological measurements are utilized. Our ET retrieval scheme is based on the basic principal of surface energy budget, which is a result of balance in longwave and shortwave radiation, latent heat, sensible heat, and energy flux into the ground. To partition the latent and sensible heat fluxes of interest from the energy balance equation, three basic parameters are of most concern, including albedo, surface temperature, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI and albedo can be easily derived from the visible and near infrared spectral data, while the surface tem-perature can be determined through the analysis of the infrared data with the Stefan Boltzmann law. From the airborne imagery taken on 28 April 2003, we observe very good dry and wet pixels that can be easily corre-sponded to the radiation and evaporation controlled crite-ria, respectively, and, hence, for the further use in defin-ing the evaporative fraction needed to partition sensible and latent heat fluxes from the net energy flux. The de-rived ET is compared with the in situ measurements.
The time variations in relative humidity observed at the Gangjeong (Goryeong) Reservoir in the Nakdong River over a one-year period (September 2012-August 2013) were analyzed with the Bowen ratio. The thermal vertical scale of the reservoir was also evaluated following Yamamoto's method. The study's results showed that the relative humidity at the reservoir was higher than that of the Daegu Meteorological Observatory (inland) all year round. The difference was slightly larger at nighttime (17-20 %) than at daytime (13-15 %) in all seasons except summer. The quantitative order of latent heat flux was summer, spring, autumn, and winter. This finding signifies that the thermal vertical scale of the reservoir corresponds to that of a shallow lake. The Bowen ratio was smallest at midday of the summer season. In other words, the net radiation energy was converted more as latent heat flux than sensible heat flux during a higher temperature period.
Accurate understanding of land surface is essential to analyze energy exchanges between earth surface and atmosphere. For the quantization of energy fluxes, the various researches about Land Surface Model(LSM) have been progressed. Among the various LSMs, the researches using Common Land Model(CLM) and Variable Infiltration Capacity(VIC) model are performed briskly. The CLM which is advanced LSM can calculate realistic results with few user defined parameters. The VIC model which is also typical LSM is widely used for estimation of energy fluxes and runoff in various fields. In this study, the energy fluxes which are net radiation, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux were estimated using CLM and VIC model at Southern Sierra-Critical Zone Observatory(SS-CZO) site in California, United States. In case of net radiation and sensible heat flux, both models showed good agreement with observations, however, the CLM showed underestimated patterns of net radiation and sensible heat flux during precipitation period. In case of latent heat flux, the CLM represented better estimation of latent heat flux than VIC model which underestimated the latent heat flux. Through the estimation of energy fluxes and analysis of models' pros and cons, the applicability of CLM and VIC models and need of multi-model application were identified.
Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDl) (1991-2001), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the Gunsan harbor Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during March to early September, and it amounts to $125\;Wm^{-2}$ in average daily during May to June. During the middle of September to February, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-125\;Wm^{-2}$ in mininum value in October. Short wave radiation was ranged from 50 to $248\;Wm^{-2}$ showing maxima in April to June. Long wave radiation was ranged from 25 to $92\;Wm^{-2}$ with mininum value in June to July. Sensible heat flux denoting negative values in April to August was ranged from -30 to $72\;Wm^{-2}.$ Latent heat flux was ranged from 15 to $82\;Wm^{-2}$ with maxima in August to September. The phase of heat exchange was changed from cooling to heating in the end of February, and from heating to cooling In the beginning of September. The advective term of heat flux showed minima in April to June and maxima in November. The ratio of temperature variations was 1.37 in the sea surface process and the horizontal process by advection. This indicates that the main factor in variation of temperature at Gunsan harbor is the heat exchange process through the sea surface from the air.
