  • The reproductive cycle of ovoviviparous melania snail, Semisulcospira libeytina libertina was studied in the valley near Naewon Temple in Yangsan, Korea. Water temperature (WT) of the habitat ranged from 1.3$^{\circ}C$ to 22.5$^{\circ}C$ The meat weight rate (MWR) reached the maximum with the beginning of WT increase in March and the minimum in August. Monthly changes in average oocyte diameter showed the maximum (249.6$\pm$2.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in July and the minimum (134.3$\pm$2.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in December S. libertina libertina seemed to be a year-round breeder except for mid-summer and mid-winter. Two main reproductive cycle of the species could be divided into five successive stages: multiplicative (March, October), growing (April and May, November), mature (June and July, December), ovulation (August, January), parturition (September and October, March to May) and resting (September, February) stages in female and multiplicative (March, October), growing (April, November), mature (March to June, December), copulatory (July and August, January), resting (September, February) stages in male.

  • The freshwater snail genus Semisulcospora is widespread in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China (Davis, 1969). Semisulcospira gottschei is becoming a candidate shellfish species for aquaculture in Korea. Although amino and fatty acids composition of S. gottschei has been reported by Sim et al. (1994), no information on nutrient requirements for this species is available. (omitted)

  • Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to reveal the esterase isozyme patterns of a freshwater snail, Semisulcospira gottschei, in the lake Uiam. From the result with inhibitors, it is tentatively concluded that four types (arylesterase, carboxylesterase, acethylesterase, acethylcholinesterase)of the adult(means of allele per locus=1.16, %polymorphism=16.7, heterozygosity=0.082)was lower than the juveniles(A=1.7, %P=16.7, H$\sub$D/=0.2215).

• The present study was conducted to find out effect of PFOS on survival, activity, growth and organ structure of the melania snail, Semisulcospira gottschei. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and four PFOS exposure condition (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L). After 16 week exposure, survival rate and activity were not significantly influenced at the two lower exposure groups, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L, but they were significantly reduced in 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L groups. Total weight and meat weight rate (MWR) were reduced in PFOS exposure group in comparison to control group. Also, histological degenerations such as acidification of mucous, necrosis and split of muscular fiber bundle, atrophy of anterior pedal gland were recognized in the foot. Hepatopancreas showed the atrophy and degeneration of the digestive cell, vacuolation of digestive gland and closure of lumen in digestive gland.

  • This study investigated the effect of wheat flour content in the diet on the growth of the snail Semisulcospira gottschei. Six diets were prepared containing wheat flour contents of 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60%. Three replicate groups of snails (average weight 0.61 g) were fed each experimental diet for 8 weeks. The survival was above 85% in all groups, and did not differ significantly among treatments. The weight gain of snails fed the diets containing 35 and 40% wheat flour was significantly higher than that of snails fed the other diets (P<0.05), and the weight gain decreased when the dietary wheat flour content increased beyond 45%. The crude protein and ash contents in snails were significantly affected by the dietary wheat flour content (P<0.05). Therefore, a diet containing 35~40% wheat flour produces the optimal growth of snails. The results of this study will be used to develop cost-effective diets for commercial snail production.

  • These studies were conducted to compare the external radulae of seven species (Semisulcospira gottschei, S. coreana, S. forticosta, S. tegulata, S. ibertina, Koreanomelania nodifila and Koreoleptoxis globus ovalis) of freshwater snails in three genera of the family Pleuroceridae in Korea. Under a microscope of 100 magnifications, observation of seven species can be distinguished sharply between three genera of Semisuicospira, Koreanomelania and Koreoleptoxis, and the morphological characters of radulae can be used as taxonomic tool in genus level of Pleuroceridae. Besides SEM photograph of the radulae based on the morphological characters in seven species can be verified a new criteria for classification of genus' unit grade in accord with firsthand drawing sketch under a microscope of 100 magnifications. But it is difficult that all of the species can be detected sharply the difference of interspecies by comparisons of radulae in the family Pleuroceridae in Korea. Therefore, the morphological characters of radulae can not be set a criteria for classification of species level.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Green Pigment Sources on the Growth and Pigment Contents of Semisulcospira coreana (배합 사료내 녹색 원료 첨가에 따른 참다슬기(Semisulcospira coreana)의 성장 및 가식부 색소 함량 변화)

  • Three separate feeding trials were performed to evaluate the dietary inclusion of pigments on growth and pigmentation of Semisulcospira coreana. In the first trial (Exp-1), snails (80 mg/snail) were fed diets containing green laver Enteromorpha intestinalis, seaweed fulvescens Capsosiphon fulvescens, chlorella Chlorella vulgaris, green tea, mugwort, kale, broccoli, sea tangle, dried laver Pyropia yezoensis, a synthetic edible dye, and a diet containing no pigment (control) for 12 weeks. Results showed that dietary treatments had no significant effects on growth performance. However, total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents of the snail's edible portion were markedly affected and the highest values were found in snails fed green laver. In the second (Exp-2) and third (Exp-3) experiments, the effect of green laver and chlorella were examined in diets for relatively smaller (35 mg/snail) and bigger (139 mg/snail) snails than those examined in the Exp-1, respectively. Feeding the bigger snails with chlorella significantly enhanced their growth rates compared to control group. Total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents of the edible portions of snails were significantly increased by dietary chlorella supplementation. These findings suggest that dietary green laver or chlorella could improve the pigmentation of S. coreana without any adverse effects on growth.
