  • A semi-empirical model to predict ship resistance in level ice based on Lindqvist's model is presented. This model assumes that contact between the ship and the ice is a case of symmetrical collision, and two contact cases are considered. Submersion force is calculated via Lindqvist's formula, and the crushing and breaking forces are determined by a concept of energy consideration during ship and ice impact. The effect of the contact coefficient is analyzed in the ice resistance prediction. To validate this model, the predicted results are compared with model test data of USCGC Healy and icebreaker Araon, and full-scale data of the icebreaker KV Svalbard. A relatively good agreement is achieved. As a result, the presented model is recommended for preliminary total resistance prediction in advance of the evaluation of the icebreaking performance of vessels.

  • The study aimed to classify the types of domestic dormitory furniture, and analyze the characteristics of each furniture type based on the empirical research methodology. The study consisted of literature review and field visit followed by survey and in-depth interview. The researchers collected 140 images of furniture from the web sites of 87 universities. Using affinity diagram, the dormitory furniture was classified into four different types: single fixed type, single semi-fixed type, multi fixed type, and multi semi-fixed type. The finding showed that the use of single fixed type was dominant in the domestic dormitory room, which had competitive price and easy maintenance. Both single fixed type and multi fixed type turned out to be lack of storage space. Meanwhile, both single semi-fixed type and multi semi-fixed type got the high value on the space efficiency due to the multi function. However, these two types could only be applied to a wide space enough for the furniture to be transformed and extended. The study analyzed the main characteristics of the dormitory furniture according to the type classification, and it is expected that this empirical study could work as a medium and database for the upcoming dormitory furniture design studies.

  • In the present study, the microstructural evolution and deformation behavior of AA 2014 aluminum alloys with different microstructures in a semi-solid state were investigated. For a given alloy, applied load and deformation time, the measured strain was higher at a higher temperature, indicative of a lower solid fraction. When a large proportion of the liquid was present as intragranular droplets, the alloy would not as easily deform because the effective liquid fraction between the solid grains had decreased. Greater deformation was achieved with higher grain boundary misorientations due to the enhanced wetting of the grain boundaries with liquid. A semi-empirical constitutive model is proposed for semi-solid deformation under the conditions in the present study. The mechanism of semi-solid deformation incorporates the initial flow of the liquid in the early stages of deformation, followed by a more gradual increase in the strain due to deformation by grain sliding accompanied by self-diffusion in the solid grains.

  • In this study, a liquid sheet type co-axial nozzle has been used to investigate the turbulent atomization characteristics which could result in the experimental data to be used in designing a jet nozzle with high performance. Image processing technique and immersion sampling method were employed to measure droplet size. In atomizing characteristics, droplet size distributions and absolute droplet sizes, SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) have been investigated in the wide ranges of flow field depending upon the air-water mass ratios. And the comparisons between the present data and the semi-empirical curves have been conducted semi-empirical correlation for SMD has been derived in the present analysis.

  • This study is about a semi-active quarter car simulation method including a MR(magneto-rheological) damper. The MR damper was modeled as Spencer model that can capture nonlinear and hysteretic behavior. The parameters of the Spencer model were extracted from a random excitation test and optimum treatment of the test data. Then, a suspension control algorithm based on Sky-hook theory was applied for the quarter car simulation. Also, an experiment was dong using a quarter car simulator to confirm the simulation results with the Spencer MR damper model

  • Automatic text classification has a long history and many studies have been conducted in this field. In particular, many machine learning algorithms and information retrieval techniques have been applied to text classification tasks. Even though much technical progress has been made in text classification, there is still room for improvement in text classification. In this paper, we will discuss remaining issues in improving text classification. In this paper, three improvement issues are presented including automatic training data generation, noisy data treatment and term weighting and indexing, and four actual studies and their empirical results for those issues are introduced. First, the semi-supervised learning technique is applied to text classification to efficiently create training data. For effective noisy data treatment, a noisy data reduction method and a robust text classifier from noisy data are developed as a solution. Finally, the term weighting and indexing technique is revised by reflecting the importance of sentences into term weight calculation using summarization techniques.

  • The capillary tube and short tube orifice have been widely used as an expansion device in the refrigeration and air-conditioning system. To improve the system performance, expansion devices need to be optimized with the components of a refrigeration system. In the present study, a numerical model for a capillary, which could predict the flow rate and properties along a tube, was developed by assuming homogeneous two-phase flow. A semi-empirical flow model for evaluation of the flow rate through a short tube orifice was also developed by using the experimental data. Finally, the results of the numerical model for a capillary was compared with those of the semi-empirical model for a short tube orifice to identify the dominant flow factors for the expansion devices.

  • Study of computational model of the concerted Diels-Alder reaction between 9,10-dimethyl anthracene (as donor) and tetracyanoethylene (as acceptor) in absence and in presence of aromatic solvents (benzene, mesitylene and hexamethylbenzene, as donors) using an AM1 semi-empirical method. AM1 method used to study the neutral charge transfer complex models that could be expected between donor and acceptor during the course of the concerted Diels-Alder reaction. Calculated enthalpies of reaction of the charge transfer complexes models showed physical and chemical meaning for explain the effect of aromatic solvents on the kinetic process of concerted Diels-Alder reaction that contains tetracyanoethylene.

  • Most engineers, related to soil and civil dynamic field, have been interested in the dynamic response of building transmitted from soil and rock to structure due to blasting. However it is not easy to estimate the dynamic response of structures and utilities due to blasting by using analytical method because of difficulties of soil modeling, prediction of excitation force and so on. In this paper, dynamic response analysis have been performed to predict vibration levels of structure due to blasting and the semi-empirical method. which is based on vibration measurement data. has been employed to consider blast vibration characteristics.
