A family of smart tuned mass dampers (STMDs) with variable frequency and damping properties is analyzed under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Two types of STMDs are studied: one is realized by a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device and the other is realized by a pendulum with an adjustable length. Based on the feedback signal, the angle of the SAIVS device or the length of the pendulum is adjusted by using a servomotor such that the frequency of the STMD matches the dominant excitation frequency in real-time. Closed-form solutions are derived for the two types of STMDs under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Results indicate that a small damping ratio (zero damping is the best theoretically) and an appropriate mass ratio can produce significant reduction when compared to the case with no tuned mass damper. Experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical result of the smart pendulum TMD (SPTMD). Frequency tuning of the SPTMD is implemented through tracking and analyzing the signal of the excitation using a short time Fourier transformation (STFT) based control algorithm. It is found that the theoretical model can predict the structural responses well. Both the SAIVS STMD and the SPTMD can significantly attenuate the structural responses and outperform the conventional passive TMDs.
In an actual design, none of the structures with shear behaviors will be designed for torsional moments. Any failure or damages to roofs, infills, shear walls, and braces caused by an earthquake, will inevitably result in relocation of center of mass and rigidity of the structure. With these changes, the dynamic characteristics of structure could be changed during an earthquake at any moment. The main objective of this paper is to obtain the relationship between time-varying eccentricity of load and corner lateral displacement. In this study, various methods have been used to determine the structural response for time-varying lateral corner displacement. As will be seen below, some of the structural calculation methods result in a significant deviation from the actual results, although these methods include the interaction effects of modes. Controlling the lateral displacement of structure can be performed in different ways such as, passive dampers, friction dampers, semi-active systems including the MR damper and active Systems. Selecting and locating these control systems is very important to bring the maximum safety with minimum cost into the structure. According to this study will be show the relation between the corner lateral displacements of structure and time-varying eccentricity by different kind of methods during an earthquake. This study will show that the response of the structure at the corners due to an earthquake can be very destructive and because of changing the eccentricity of load, calculating the maximum possible response of system can be carried out by this method. Finally, some kind of systems must be used for controlling these displacements. The results shows that, the CQC, DSC and exact methods is comply each other but the results of Vanmark method is not comfortable for these kind of buildings.
In the last decades, valuable results have been reported regarding conventional passive, active, semi-active, and hybrid structural control systems on two-dimensional and a few three-dimensional shear buildings. In this research, using a three-dimensional finite element model of high-rise concrete structures, designed by performance based plastic design method, it was attempted to construct a relatively close to reality model of concrete structures equipped with Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) by considering the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI), torsion effect, hysteresis behavior and cracking effect of concrete. In contrast to previous studies which have focused mainly on linearly designed structures, in this study, using performance-based plastic design (PBPD) design approach, nonlinear behavior of the structures was considered from the beginning of the design stage. Inelastic time history analysis on a detailed model of twenty-story concrete structure was performed under a far-field ground motion record set. The seismic responses of the structure by considering SSI effect are studied by eight main objective functions that are related to the performance of the structure, containing: lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, plastic energy dissipation, shear force, number of plastic hinges, local plastic energy and rotation of plastic hinges. The tuning problem of TMD based on tuned mass spectra is set by considering five of the eight previously described functions. Results reveal that the structural damage distribution range is retracted and inter-story drift distribution in height of the structure is more uniform. It is strongly suggested to consider the effect of SSI in structural design and analysis.
This study investigates the association of the AFB stain with the cycle threshold (Ct) value of the Cobas TaqMan MTB test (CTM test, Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland), and it establishes the base data for semi-quantitative identification of M. tuberculosis by the Ct value. CTM test were simultaneously conducted on 8,389 specimens submitted to the Samsung Medical Center from January 2015 to December 2015, and the results were analyzed and compared retrospectively investigates the association of the AFB stain with the Ct value of the CTM test, and it establishes the base data for semi-quantitative identification of M. tuberculosis by the Ct value. The Ct values for 135 positive specimens of the CTM were inversely correlated with the AFB stain (rs=-0.545, P<0.01). When the Ct value of the CTM test and the time to positivity (TTP) of the mycobacteria cultures were verified based on the AFB stain, they were found to have a positive correlation (rs=0.136, P<0.01). The negative correlation between the CTM test and the AFB stain grade was demonstrated. The clinical significance was verified by applying these criteria to the clinical results. The semi-quantitative criteria of this study can be used to facilitate the rapid isolation of patients with active tuberculosis and infection control in the hospital.

A study has been carried out that effectively controls the vibration of asymmetric cable-stayed bridges caused by earthquakes with MR dampers. In order to enhance the practical serviceability of MR dampers, an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge structure has been designed and produced, and a MR damper has been produced so as to have this bridge structure controlled appropriately. An experiment that controls vertical and horizontal vibrations has been carried out by exciting the asymmetric cable-stayed bridge in the horizontal direction with the El-centro seismic wave. The control performance of the MR damper has been evaluated under the five control conditions in the experiments of vibration control in each direction. As a result of the experiment, MR dampers were proved to control vibrations more effectively when either Lyapunov control algorithm or Clipped-optimal control algorithm was used to control vibrations of the asymmetric cable-stayed bridge caused by earthquakes. In addition, different controlling effects were found in vibration controls in vertical and horizontal directions due to the asymmetry of the structure and the horizontal excitation. With such controlling effects, semi-active MR dampers are evaluated to effectively control vibrations caused by earthquakes in flexible and asymmetric structures such as asymmetric cable-stayed bridges.

This paper is concerned with an experimental research to random vibration control caused by external loads specially in bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. Experimenting on a reduced structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, we inflicted a reduced form of El-centro wave on the model structure to a proper proportion. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and Lyapunov stability theory. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the peak absolute displacements, the peak absolute accelerations and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, case of Lyapunov control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacement and acceleration. Also, this method could to decrease consuming of external power for vibration control. Finally, it was noteworthy that Lyapunov control method was specially effective in the vibration control employing a semi-active damper such MR damper.

This paper aims to constitute a feedback vibration control system using wireless sensor networks and experiment it on a model structure to verify its effectiveness. For the purpose, we set up a feedback vibration control system composed of a wireless input/output(I/O) sensor node based on bluetooth, a home-made shear type MR damper, a shaker which generates a constant size of sine wave, and a simple beam model structure. The vibration control experiment was performed by shaking the 1/4 point of beam with a shaker. At the moment of shaking, we controled the vibration with MR damper which was placed vertically on the center of beam. Simultaneously, by acquiring acceleration response at the 2/4 point of beam, we evaluated the effectiveness of control capability. The control command was set to send a voltage signal to MR damper when the acceleration response, acquired from the wireless I/O sensor node placed at the center of beam, was more than a certain amount. Although the realtime feedback vibration control system constituted in this paper is effective only within a limited command system, it has been proven that the system was able to effectively decrease the vibration of structure by generating a control command aimed for realtime purpose. The system also showed a possibility to be used as a structural response control system adapting a variety of semi-active control algorithm.

Multiple Mobile Robots System (MMRS) has shown many attractive features in lots of real-world applications that motivate their rapid and wide diffusion. In MMRS, the Cooperative Localization (CL) is the basis and premise of its high-performance task. However, the statistical characteristics of the system noise should be already known in traditional CL algorithms, which is difficult to satisfy in actual MMRS because of the numerous of disturbances form the complex external environment. So the CL accuracy will be reduced. To solve this problem, an improved Adaptive Active Cooperative Localization (A2CL) algorithm based on information optimization strategy for MMRS is proposed in this manuscript. In this manuscript, an adaptive information fusion algorithm based on the variance component estimation under Extended Kalman filter (VCEKF) method for MMRS is introduced firstly to enhance the robustness and accuracy of information fusion by estimating the covariance matrix of the system noise or observation noise in real time. Besides, to decrease the effect of observation uncertainty on CL accuracy further, an observation optimization strategy based on information theory, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy, is used here to maximize the information amount from observations. And semi-physical simulation experiments were carried out to verity the A2CL algorithm's performance finally. Results proved that the presented A2CL algorithm based on information optimization strategy for MMRS cannot only enhance the CL accuracy effectively but also have good robustness.

Scientific challenges in the field of MR(magnetorheological) fluids and devices consist in the development of MR devices, the mathematical modeling and simulation of MR devices, and the development of (optimal) control algorithm for MR device systems. To take a maximum advantage of MR fluids in control applications a reliable mathematical model, which predicts their nonlinear characteristics, is needed. A inverse model of the MR device is required to calculate current(or voltage) input of MR damper, which generates required damping force. In this paper, we implemented test a bench for shear mode rotary MR damper and laboratory tests were performed to study the characteristics of the prototype shear-mode rotary MR damper. The direct identification and inverse dynamics modeling for shear mode rotary MR dampers using multi-layer neural networks are studied.

To date, many viable smart base isolation systems have been proposed and investigated. In this study, a novel friction pendulum system (FPS) and an MR damper are employed as the isolator and supplemental damping device, respectively, of the smart base isolation system. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used to modulate the MR damper because the FLC has an inherent robustness and ability to handle non linearities and uncertainties. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used for optimization of the FLC. The main purpose of employing a GA is to determine appropriate fuzzy control rules as well to adjust parameters of the membership functions. To this end, a GA with a local improvement mechanism is applied. This method is efficient in improving local portions of chromosomes. Neuro fuzzy models are used to represent dynamic behavior of the MR damper and FPS. Effectiveness of the proposed method for optimal design of the FLC is judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. It has been shown that the proposed method can find optimal fuzzy rules and the GA optimized FLC outperforms not only a passive control strategy but also a human designed FLC and a conventional semi active control algorithm.
