Electrorheological(ER) fluid is a kind of smart material with variable shear stress and dynamic viscosity under various electric field intensity. Electric field can control the damping characteristics of ER damper. The objective of this study is the analysis of the performance of ER damper and its application to shock absorber. Idealized nonlinear Bingham plastic shear flow model is used to predict the velocity profile between electrodes. Cylindrical dashpot ER damper with moving electrode is constructed and tested under various electric fields. The analytic and experimental results for damping force are compared and discussed. Drop test system using ER damper is prepared to identify transient vibration characteristics. The rebound is eased as the applied electric field increases. When semi-active control algorithm is applied, rebound phenomenon disappears and vibration energy level decays faster than the case of zero electric field.
This paper introduces a novel, rigorous, and efficient probabilistic methodology for the performance-based optimal design (PBOD) of semi-active tuned mass damper (SATMD) for seismically excited nonlinear structures. The proposed methodology is consistent with the modern performance-based earthquake engineering framework and aims to design reliable control systems. To this end, an optimization problem has been defined which considers the parameters of control systems as design variables and minimization of the probability of exceeding a targeted structural performance level during the lifetime as an objective function with a constraint on the failure probability of stroke length damage state associated with mass damper mechanism. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is illustrated through a numerical example of performance analysis of an eight-story nonlinear shear building frame with hysteretic bilinear behavior. The SATMD with variable stiffness and damping have been designed separately with different mass ratios. Their performance has been compared with that of uncontrolled structure and the structure controlled with passive TMD in terms of probabilistic demand curves, response hazard curves, fragility curves, and exceedance probability of performance levels during the lifetime. Numerical results show the effectiveness, simplicity, and reliability of the proposed PBOD method in designing SATMD with variable stiffness and damping for the nonlinear frames where they have reduced the exceedance probability of the structure up to 49% and 44%, respectively.
In this paper, a hybrid seismic response control (HSRC) system was developed to control bridge behavior caused by the seismic load. It was aimed at optimum vibration control, composed of a rubber bearing of passive type and MR-damper of semi-active type. Its mathematical modeling was driven and applied to a bridge model so as to prove its validity. The bridge model was built for the experiment, a two-span bridge of 8.3 meters in length with the HSRC system put up on it. Then, inflicting the EI Centro seismic load on it, shaking table tests were carried out to confirm the system's validity. The experiments were conducted under the basic structure state (without an MR-damper applied) first, and then under the state with an MR-damper applied. It was also done under the basic structure state with a reinforced rubber bearing applied, then the passive on/off state of the HSRC system, and finally the semi-active state where the control algorithm was applied to the system. From the experiments, it was observed that pounding rather increased when the MR-damper alone was applied, and also that the application of the HSRC system effectively prevented it from occurring. That is, the experiments showed that the system successfully mitigated structural behavior by 70% against the basic structure state, and, further, when control algorithm is applied for the operation of the MR-damper, relative displacement was found to be effectively mitigated by 80%. As a result, the HSRC system was proven to be effective in mitigating responses of the two-span bridge under seismic load.

In this study, based on the RPS algorithm, the application results to an electrically controlled suspension system using previewed road information are presented. Reducing the excessive vibration induced by a disturbance transmitted to the system and secure its stability is a major issue. In particular, in the automotive industry, the demand is constantly being raised. A typical external disturbance causing vibration and instability of a vehicle is an irregular roadway surface that contacts a running vehicle tire. Therefore, obtaining such profile information is an important process. The RPS algorithm using a multi sensor system was constructed and implemented in a real car. Through experimental work using the RPS system included non-contact type optical sensors, it could robustly reconstruct the road input profiles from the intermixed data onto the vehicle's dynamic motion while traveling at an uneven roadway surface. A controller with a preview control was designed in the framework of a semi-active suspension system based on the 7 degrees of freedom full vehicle model. The control performance of the system was evaluated through simulations and the results were compared with the passive vehicle condition. These results highlight the feasibility of the presented control frame.

Tip vortex cavitation (TVC) is important for naval ships and research vessels that require raising the cavitation inception speed to maximum possible values. The concepts for alleviating the tip vortex are summarized by Platzer and Souders (1979), who carried out a thorough literature survey. Active control of TVC involves the injection of a polymer or water from the blade tip. The main effect of such mass injection (both water and polymer solutions) into the vortex core is an increase in the core radius, consequently delaying TVC inception. However, the location of the injection port needs to be selected with great care in order to ensure that the mass injection is effective in delaying TVC inception. In the present study, we propose a semi-active control scheme that is achieved by attaching a thread at the propeller tip. The main idea of a semi-active control is that because of its flexibility, the attached thread can be sucked into the low-pressure region closer to the vortex core center. An experimental study using a scale model was carried out in the cavitation tunnel at the Seoul National University. It was found that a flexible thread can effectively suppress the occurrence of TVC under the design condition for a model propeller.
This study proposes a new control approach for efficient vibration suppression of two identical adjacent structures. The conventional control approach of two adjacent structures is to interconnect the two structures with passive, semi-active or active control devices. However, when the two adjacent structures are identical to each other, their dynamical behaviors such as frequency and damping properties are also the same. In this case, the interconnected control devices cannot exhibit the dissipative control forces on the both structures as expected since the relative displacements and velocities of the devices become close to zero. In other words, the interconnection method does not work for the twin structures as enough as expected. In order to solve this problem, we propose several new control approaches to effectively and efficiently reduce the identically-fluctuating responses of the adjacent structures with minimum control efforts. In order to demonstrate the proposed control systems, the proposed several control systems are optimally designed and their control performances are compared with that of the conventional optimal control system where each TMD(tuned mass damper) is installed in each structure for independent control purpose. The simulated results show that one of the proposed control systems(System 04) is able to guarantee enhanced control performance compared with the conventional system.
In this paper, an optimal suspension system with preview of the road input is synthesized for a half tracked vehicle. The main goal of this research is to improve the ride comfort characteristics of a fast moving tracked vehicle in order to maintain the driver's driving capability. Several different kinds of preview control algorithms are evaluated with active or semi-active suspension systems. The road information estimated from the motion of the 1st road-wheel is adequate to make the best use of the preview control algorithm for tracked vehicles. The ride-comfort characteristics of the tracked vehicle are more dependent on pitching angular acceleration than heaving acceleration. The pitching motion is reduced by the suspension system with hard outer suspensions and soft inner suspensions. Simulation results show that the performance of sky-hook algorithms for ride comfort nearly follow that of full state feedback algorithms.

On the basis of theoretical studies on the effect of the cylinders attached to semi-infinite screens, the tangential sound power-transport parallel to the surface of the attached cylinder is minimized by means of a secondary sound field, which is generated from a part of the attached cylinder. The numerical study shows the possibility of deflecting the incident sound by minimizing the sound field of the upper sections. The acoustical shadow region was more pronounced in both near- and far-field compared to the passive case with rigid surface, i.e. without active control. For a relatively wide frequency range it was possible to enhance shielding effects only with few secondary sources and error microphones. In this paper effects of control parameters on the actively controlled sound field near the top edge of noise barriers are studied. Results of numerical study and model measurements are shown and discussed.

The paper studies a comparison analysis of semi-active control strategies for a Macpherson strut type suspension system consisting of MR(magneto-rheological) damper. As a first step, in order to formulate governing, a dynamic full model of a Macpherson strut is developed considering the kinematics. The nonlinear equation of motion of the strut is then linearized around the equilibrium point. A new adaptive moving sliding model controller is developed for fast response of the system. A newly proposed adaptive moving sliding mode control strategy is then compared with conventional sliding mode controller and skyhook controller. The comparison is made for two different types of road inputs; bump and random road profiles showing superior vibration control performance in time and frequency domains.
