  • An innovative multi-story Semi-Active Tuned Mass Damper (SATMD) building system is proposed to control seismic response of existing structures. The application of adding new stories as large tuned mass and semi-active (SA) resettable actuators as central features of the control scheme is derived. For the effective control of the structures, the optimal tuning parameters are considered for the large mass ratio, for which a previously proposed equation is used and the practical optimal stiffness is allocated to the actuator stiffness and rubber bearing stiffness. A two-degree-of freedom (2-DOF) model is adopted to verify the principal efficiency of the suggested structural control concept. The simulations for this study utilizes the three ground motions, from SAC project, having probability of exceedance of 50% in 50 years, 10% in 50 years, and 2% in 50 years for the Los Angeles region. 12-story moment resisting frames, which are modified as '12+2' and '12+4' story structures, are investigated to assess the viability and effectiveness of the system that aims to reduce the response of the buildings to earthquakes. The control ability of the SATMD scheme is compared to that of an uncontrolled and an ideal Passive Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD) building system. From the performance results of suggested '12+2' and '12+4' story retrofitting case studies, SATMD systems shows significant promise for application of structural control where extra stories might be added.

  • In this study, a semi-active isolator was constructed from applying a MR damper that used the MR fluid to an isolator. The parameter identification was also performed to determine the characteristics of this semi-active isolator during which the least squares method and the auxiliary variable method were applied to produce a value closest to the true value. In addition, the MR damper's nonlinear damping force was closely analyzed to greatly reduce the range of error. Based on this analysis, it was discovered that the parameter tended to increase with more electric current. Such analysis of the dynamic properties of semi-active isolator proved that constructing an isolator that provides a more stable operation could be achieved.

  • Control performance of a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) mainly depends on control algorithms. A lot of control strategies have been proposed for semi-active control devices. Recently, machine learning begins to be applied to development of vibration control algorithm. In this study, a reinforcement learning among machine learning techniques was employed to develop a semi-active control algorithm for a smart TMD. The smart TMD was composed of magnetorheological damper in this study. For this purpose, an 11-story building structure with a smart TMD was selected to construct a reinforcement learning environment. A time history analysis of the example structure subject to earthquake excitation was conducted in the reinforcement learning procedure. Deep Q-network (DQN) among various reinforcement learning algorithms was used to make a learning agent. The command voltage sent to the MR damper is determined by the action produced by the DQN. Parametric studies on hyper-parameters of DQN were performed by numerical simulations. After appropriate training iteration of the DQN model with proper hyper-parameters, the DQN model for control of seismic responses of the example structure with smart TMD was developed. The developed DQN model can effectively control smart TMD to reduce seismic responses of the example structure.

  • In general, control performance of the active control system is superior to that of the passive control devices. However, the active system require a large amount of external energy to operate the actuators. Semi-active control systems maintain the reliability of the passive control systems while taking advantage of the adjustability of the active control system. In this research, a semi-active orificed fluid damper having the capacity of about 2 tons was designed and fabricated. It is a two-stage damper with normally open solenoid valve. A series of tests was performed to grasp its performance characteristics. It was also applied to a 6-story steel structure subjected to random and seismic excitations for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absorption.

  • In this paper, a modified skyhook control for the semi-active Macpherson suspension system is investigated. A new model for the semi-active type suspension, which incorporates the rotational motion of the unsprung mass, is introduced and an output feedback control law using the skyhook control method is derived. The gains in the skyhook controller are adaptively adjusted by estimating the road conditions. Because two vertical acceleration sensors, one for the sprung mass and another for the unsprung mass, are used rather than using the angle sensor for the rotational motion of the control arm, the relative velocity of the rattle space is filtered using the acceleration signals. For testing the control performance, the actual damping force has been incorporated via the hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The performances of a passive damper and a semi-active damper are compared. Simulation results are provided.

  • Seismic performance of semi-active fuzzy control algorithm to operate MR dampers for coupling adjacent building is investigated in this paper. In the proposed semi-active control technique, the fuzzy logic is used as a method to adjust input voltage to MR damper. In order to validate control performance of proposed technique, the seismic performance of the semi-active fuzzy control system is compared with that of passive control system where the input voltage to MR damper is set to display maximum damping force. The simulated results show that the semi-active fuzzy control technique effectively regulates the trade-off existing between seismic responses of two buildings subject to various earthquake excitations.

  • This research focuses on developing the Smart material with Grease adopted as a base oil to overcome a particle deposition caused by the MR fluid consisting of a silicon, which maximizing the characteristics and advantage of the MR fluid. By adopting the SMG fluid to a shear damper, this paper aimed to evaluate the control performance of it according to the variation of intensity of electric current(0 A, 0.5 A, 1.0 A, 1.5 A, 2.0 A, 2.5 A) and frequency(0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, 2 Hz). Subsequently, the usability of the SMG damper was analyzed by comparing the dynamic model of it to that of the other types of dampers(Power(Involution) Model, Bingham Model). As a result, DR, the performance indicator of semi-active damper, shows approximately 5 in a condition of 2 Hz. Also while confirming the excellent performance like the Power and the Bingham model, it raises the possibility to exploit it as the semi-active damper.

  • This paper presents a novel type of a semiactive damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. Unlike conventional cylindrical ER damper, the proposed one has controllable orifices by the intensity of electric fields (We call it orifice type). The dynamic model of the orifice type ER damper is formulated by incorporating field-dependent Bingham properties of an arabic gum-based ER fluid. Design parameters such as electrode gap are subsequently determined on the basis of the dynamic model. After manufacturing the orifice type ER damper, field-dependent damping forces and damping force controllability are empirically evaluated. In the evaluation procedure, conventional cylindrical ER damper is adopted and its performance characteristics are compared with those of the orifice type ER damper. In addition, the proposed one is installed with a full-car model and its vibration control performance associated with a skyhook controller is investigated.

  • In this paper, the semi-active control of a helicopter landing gear using magneto -rheological(MR) damper is studied. A dynamic model of the MR damper is formulated by incorporating magnetic field-dependent Bingham properties of the MR fluid. The electromagnet of the MR damper is designed and its magnetic field is analyzed using a commercial finite element code. The damping characteristics of MR damper by changing the intensity of the magnetic field are investigated and the dynamic responses of the helicopter landing gear with MR damper are simulated. The semi-active control of the helicopter landing gear is simulated by implementing a sky-kook control algorithm and its performance is evaluated comparing to the passive control.
