  • The study of English words in terms of etymology has a long history, going back over 110 years since Murray et al. (1884). Scholars have therefore had lots of time to gather all kind of information on the origin of English words. In fact, Modern English is the product of a long and complex process of historical developments from a great diversity of sources. The origins and development of English words meaning ‘a vessel for washing, a bath or a toilet’ are traced from Old English to the twentieth century in this paper in terms of the semantic and/or conceptual categories of the words with their particular senses. We conclude this paper with a brief discussion of how the teaching of English words can give some feedback to both teachers and students under the circumstances of English education in Korea and/or how we come to a better understanding of this charming field of English etymology in its own right.

  • In this paper, we propose a hierarchical segmentation method for tracking a semantic video object using a watershed algorithm based on morphological filtering. In the proposed method, each hierarchy consists of three steps: First, markers are extracted on the simplified current frame. Second, region growing by a modified watershed algorithm is performed for segmentation. Finally, the segmented regions are classified into 3 categories, i.e., inside, outside, and uncertain regions according to region probability values, which are acquired by the probability map calculated from a estimated motion field. Then, for the remaining uncertain regions, the above three steps are repeated at lower hierarchies with less simplified frames until every region is decided to a certain region. The proposed algorithm provides prospective results in video sequences such as Miss America, Clair, and Akiyo.

  • As an attempt to investigate the use of common verbs by a small group of Korean college students at the advanced level, the present study describes the students' speech production data collected from picture description tasks. The primary focus of the data description was how the students used high-frequency verbs in describing everyday activities. Out of total 442 units, 149 verbs were erroneously used. All erroneous utterances were classified into four categories according to their characteristics. The most prominent error type was overgeneralization due to incomplete knowledge of lexical items. Results showed that verbs used in everyday life were not easy even for the advanced level students. Although in some cases, L1 influence was discerned, the students' problems are more fundamental. In particular, the data revealed lack of knowledge of collocational possibilities and restrictions, and confusion about semantic boundaries between verbs which have similar semantic areas. The findings suggest that teaching at the advanced level should take contrastive approaches intralingually as well as interlingually to the high-frequency verbs.

  • The purpose of this work is to analyze categorial character of Russian verbal aspect from the typological perspective. To do this, first of all we will examine the overall historical process of grammaticalization of Russian verbal aspect. As a result of analysis, we have suggested that against wide-spread general assumptions in this area Russian verbal aspect correspond rather to lexico-grammatical category, than to purely typical grammatical category. Actually, I think this kind of approach as a pivotal point for the study of Russian verbal aspect. For example, this kind of typological approach has great advantages in a sense that firstly it gives us possibility of breaking from notorious routine Slavic-Centrism, secondly it can explain sufficiently and adequately various lexico-semantic usages of Russian verbs. Thirdly, our approach consistently accounts for various interactions of lexico-semantic, grammatical, discourse-pragmatic levels, in which Russian verbal aspect is involved. And finally, it sheds light on functional interactions between verbal categories, such as aspect, tense, and mood.

  • This study aimed to identify target lexical bundles (e.g., on the other hand, at the same time) for argumentative essay writing and rank them in order of teaching priority for Japanese learners. Despite significant functional roles of lexical bundles in academic writing, the inclusion of lexical bundles in argumentative writing had been underexplored. Since argumentative writing skills help undergraduate students prepare for their academic careers (e.g., writing papers), the lexical bundles under this genre deserve more attention. This study first extracted 78 target bundles from L1 argumentative essay corpora (International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English: ICNALE and Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays: LOCNESS). The study then classified the bundles according to their discourse functions and semantic transparency to estimate the learnability for Japanese learners in L2 compatible corpora with the ICNALE. The results showed that learners had difficulty using the bundles with referential functions (e.g., in the form of) and semantic opaqueness (e.g., when it comes to), suggesting that the bundles in these two categories should be prioritized among the 78 bundles.

  • This study wanted to find out what college students thought about family participated delivery and what concerns they had. To this end, eight college students aged 20 to 25 were interviewed three times. The data collection period was from March 20 to April 10, 2021. Interview materials were collected and interpreted simultaneously using the Giorgi method, a phenomenological research method. As a result of the analysis, 29 semantic units were derived, 12 subcomponents were grouped again, and five categories were formed as final components. The five categories of thoughts on the participated delivery of college students consisted of Responsibility, Happiness, Stability, Shame, and Anxiety. Based on the above meaning, college students were found to be comfortable with their families and to be more comfortable with birth happiness, while also feeling the risk of infection and shame as women. Accordingly, this study suggests that when participating in the delivery of family participation of college students who will be future parents, a systematic protocol will be established to thoroughly prepare for infection and protect women's privacy.

  • This paper discloses a striking similarity between Korean/Japanese wh-NPs and Italian QPs: both categories are disallowed from LD-movement out of weak islands. This leads us to a substantial claim that wh-phrases in the former languages possibly belong to a non-D-linked category, parallel to the Italian QPs. This claim is also supported by semantic evidence: that is, in-situ wh-NPs in these languages lack covert partitivity (Kyungnam University)

  • User reviews are valuable information that can be used for various purposes. In particular, the product reviews on online shopping sites are important information which can directly affect the purchasing decision of the customers. In this paper, we present our design and implementation of a system for summarizing the customer's opinion and the features of each product by analyzing reviews on a commercial shopping site. During the analysis process, several natural language processing(NLP) techniques and the semantic dictionary were used. The semantic dictionary contains vocabularies that are used to express product features and customer's opinions. And it was constructed in semi-automatic way with the help of the tool we implemented. Furthermore, we discuss how to handle the vocabularies that have different meanings according to the context. We analyzed 1796 reviews about 20 products of 2 categories collected from an actual shopping site and implemented a novel ranking system. We obtained 88.94% for precision and 47.92% for recall on extracting opinion expression, which means our system can be applicable for real use.

  • Information integration for distributed and heterogeneous data sources is still an open challenging, and schema matching is critical in this process. This paper presents and approach to automatic elements matching between XML application schemas using similarity measure and relaxation labeling. The semantic modeling of XML application schema has also been presented. The similarity measure method considers element categories and their properties. In an effort to achieve an optimal matching, contextual constraints are used in the relaxation labeling method. Based on the semantic modeling of XML application schemas, the compatible constraint coefficients are devised in terms of the structures and semantic relationships as defined in the semantic model. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed methods, an algorithm for XML schema matching has been developed, and corresponding computational experiments show changes of calculated values.
