Comparing the Use of Self and Peer Assessment: A Case Study in a Statistics Course

  • In this study, we compare the assessments made by self, peer and instructor in a statistics course. The goal is to investigate the following two questions: (1) Is it reasonable or fair to expect students to be responsible for assessing the work of their colleagues and themselves? (2) What are students' opinions about the learning effect after they participate in the assessment process? As part of the study investigating these questions, we designed a prototype for a Web-based assessment tool and a procedure to apply the assessment techniques in a statistics course. In addition, we collected and analyzed the data produced in the assessment processes from students and the instructor. The analysis results are summarized as follows: First, self assessment was not accord with instructor assessment, but peer assessment was similar to the assessment by instructor. This result reflected that it is reasonable or fair to expect students to be responsible for assessing the work of their colleagues. Second, peer assessment of their colleagues successfully helped students increase their understanding of the course, and the students increased their skills in the actual assessment process by assessing the work of their colleagues. Finally, many students indicated a high interest level on the assessments.

  • The escape theory is the theory of problem behavior such as suicide. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of gaming disorder, which has been attracting attention as a typical youth problem, through escape theory. Suicide theory is a process in which the problem triggered by the negative external environment flows into internal attribution and self-criticism, and this leads to a process leading to problematic behavior with disgust self-awareness. This process was applied to the environment, psychology, and behavior of adolescents. As a result, the lack of affection and consistency of the parents resulted in negative external environment, which affected the self-esteem of children by creating a negative external environment. And low self-esteem caused negative emotions, lowered self control, and confirmed to induce game addiction. The results of this analysis show that game addiction has a structure similar to obsessive behaviors such as binge eating and shopping addiction explained through the escape theory model and it is necessary to concentrate more on the environmental psychological factors for game addiction research.

Influence of Surface Morphology and Substrate on Thermal Stability and Desorption Behavior of Octanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers

  • The formation and thermal desorption behaviors of octanethiol (OT) SAMs on single crystalline Au (111) and polycrystalline Au, Ag, and Cu substrates were examined by X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and contact angle (CA) measurements. XPS and CA measurements revealed that the adsorption of octanethiol (OT) molecules on these metals led to the formation of chemisorbed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Three main desorption fragments for dioctyl disulfide (C8SSC8+, dimer), octanethiolate (C8S+), and octanethiol (C8SH+) were monitored using TDS to understand the effects of surface morphology and the nature of metal substrates on the thermal desorption behavior of alkanethiols. TDS measurements showed that a sharp dimer peak with a very strong intensity on single crystalline Au (111) surface was dominantly observed at 370 K, whereas a broad peak on the polycrystalline Au surface was observed at 405 K. On the other hand, desorption behaviors of octanethiolates and octanethiols were quite similar. We concluded that substrate morphology strongly affects the dimerization process of alkanethiolates on Au surfaces. We also found that desorption intensity of the dimer is in the order of Au>>Ag>Cu, suggesting that the dimerization process occurs efficiently when the sulfur-metal bond has a more covalent character (Au) rather than an ionic character (Ag and Cu).

  • As the degree of economic development of society increases, the maintenance issues on the existing social overhead capital becomes essential. Accordingly, the adaptation of the concept of Level of service in highway maintenance is indispensable. It is also crucial to manage and perform the service level such as road assets to provide universal services to users. In this regards, the purpose of this study is to improve the maintenance service rating model and to focus on the assessment items and weights among the improvements. Particularly, in determining weights, an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is performed based on the survey response results. After then, this study conducts unsupervised neural network models such as Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Davies-Bouldin (DB) Index to divide proper sub-groups and determine priorities. This paper identifies similar cases by grouping the results of the responses based on the similarity of the survey responses. This can effectively support decision making in general situations where many evaluation factors need to be considered at once, resulting in reasonable policy decisions. It is the process of using advanced technology to find optimized management methods for maintenance.

  • It can be explained by congruity theory as a process that consumers engage in a matching process to identify personal community that is congruent with their self-images to find the identification between the self and the personal community. Personal community cues that evoke certain images are viewed as activating similar beliefs about the self (e.g., high status). Individuals prompt a comparison process to determine whether the personal community and self-image are congruent and imagine prototypical users of the personal community and select ones that maximize similarity to their actual or desired self-concept. Identity is devided into personal identity and social identity. Consumers are likely to be influenced by both personal identity and social identity. In this article the influencing factors of the commitment to on-line personal community are explored by the sources of both personal identification and social identification. The results are as follows. The maintenance expression and enhancement expression of personal self influence the level of personal identification positively and the maintenance expression and enhancement expression of social self influence the level of social identification positively. The level of both social and personal identification positively influence the commitment to on-line personal community which gives positive responses to the source enterprise that allows the cyberspace and the other benefits to be used.

  • Early cost estimates are important to decision-making for a construction project. Moreover, the possibility of reducing the project cost is getting less as the project is progressed. Case-based reasoning (CBR), which can be viewed as an effective method for early cost estimating, is widely utilized recently. Early cost estimates using CBR have advantages over the traditional ones as they produce reasonable outputs and self-studying is possible by simply adding new cases. Case-based reasoning is composed of a cycle of retrieve, reuse, revise, and retain process. However, in the majority of research cases, they are focused on how to retrieve the similar cases, instead of revising the cases which is expected to increase accuracy results of cost estimation. This research suggests a method of revising retrieved similar cases in a GA-CBR cost model which is widely studied and utilized for early cost estimating recently. To validate the proposed method, case study is conducted based on Korean public apartment projects.

Factors Associated with Stages of Exercise Behavior Change Applying the Transtheoretical Model in Upper Grade Elementary Students (범이론적 모형에 근거한 일부 초등학교 고학년 아동의 운동행위 변화단계 관련요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the stages of exercise behavior change after adjusting for related covariates. Methods: Participants included 362 of fourth to sixth graders in 3 elementary schools in a metropolitan city in Korea. The data were collected using structured questionnaire included Korean Stages of Change Scale for Exercise. Results: Logistic regression results showed that the motivational factors associated with transition from precontemplation to contemplation were cognitive process of change, self-reevaluation, conscious raising; regarding that from contemplation to preparation, cons of the decisional balance; regarding those from preparation to action, behavioral process, counter-conditioning, stimulus control, which were very similar to the results of previous researches subjected other age groups. But, there was no motivational factors associated with from action to maintenance, and self-efficacy had no influence on forwarding stages of change. Conclusions: TTM would be applicable to explain the exercise behavior of some children in Korea, which suggested that it be useful in developing the programs to improve physical activities of Korean school children.

A Study on the Self-annealing Characteristics of Electroplated Copper Thin Film for DRAM Integrated Process (DRAM 집적공정 응용을 위한 전기도금법 증착 구리 박막의 자기 열처리 특성 연구)

  • This research scrutinizes the self-annealing characteristics of copper used to metal interconnection for application of DRAM fabrication process. As the time goes after the copper deposited, the grain of copper is growing. It is called self-annealing. We use the electroplating method for copper deposition and estimate two kinds of electroplating chemicals having different organic additives. As the time of self-annealing is elapsed, sheet resistance decreases with logarithmic dependence of time and is finally saturated. The improvement of sheet resistance is approximately 20%. The saturation time of experimental sample is shorter than that of reference sample. We can find that self-annealing is highly efficient in grain growth of copper through the measurement of TEM analysis. The structure of copper grain is similar to the bamboo type useful for current flow. The results of thermal excursion characteristics show that the reliability of self-annealed sample is better than that of sample annealed at higher temperature. The self-annealed sample is not contained in hillock. The self-annealed samples grow until $2{\mu}m$ and develop in [100] direction more favorable for reliability.

Sequential use of SOM, DEA and AHP method for the stepwise benchmarking of emerging technology (신흥 기술의 단계적 벤치마킹을 위한 SOM, DEA와 AHP 방법의 순차 활용)

  • Emerging technologies have significant implications in establishing competitive advantages and are characterized by continuous rapid development. Efficient benchmarking is more and more important in the development of emerging technologies. Similar input level and importance are two necessary criteria need to be considered for emerging technology's benchmarking. In this study, we proposed a sequential use of self-organizing map(SOM), data envelopment analysis(DEA) and analytical hierarchy process(AHP) method for the stepwise benchmarking of emerging technology. The proposed method uses two-level SOM to cluster the emerging technologies with similar required input levels together, then, in each cluster, uses DEA-BCC model to evaluate the efficiencies of the emerging technologies and do tier analysis to form tiers. On each tier, AHP rating method is used to calculate each emerging technology's importance priority. The optimal benchmarking path of each cluster is established by connecting the emerging technologies with the highest importance priority. In order to validate the proposed method, we apply it to a case of biotechnology. The result shows the proposed method can overcome difficulties in benchmarking, select suitable benchmarking targets and make the benchmarking process more efficient and reasonable.
