The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of self-help management program which strengthens self-efficacy for post stroke elders who attend day care center in Chongju. One group pretest-posttest design was used, and the subjects were 7 post stroke elders with hemiparesis. The self-help management program consisted of 5 sessions and each session included group education on stroke, ROM exercise, recreation and self-care strategies. Those strategies for encouraging and reinforcing self-efficacy provided verbal persuasion, performance accomplishment and vicarious experience. All subjects were questioned before and after the program about ADLs, IADLs, self-efficacy, self-care behavior and depression. The analysis of data revealed that the program was effective to increase the IADLs, self-efficacy and self-care behavior. However, there was no significant difference between pre and post ADLs and depression. The results indicated that this program may be adopted to improve the physical and psychological function of post stroke elderly patients in community settings.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a self-management program on self-efficacy and quality of life for Korean women with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: A quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control group pretest posttest design was used. The data were collected from July 1 to Sep. 15, 2007. Thirty one arthritis patients (15 in the experimental group and 16 in the control group) were participated in this study. A self-management program developed by Korean Society of Muscle and Joint Health in 1994 was used. The program was consisted of 6 sessions, 2 hours each and held every Friday for 6 weeks. General Self-Efficacy Scale and Quality of Life were used to test the effect of the program. Results: Hypothesis 1; "Self-efficacy in the experimental group after program would be higher than the control group" was supported. Hypothesis 2; "Quality of Life in the experimental group after program would be higher than the control group " was not supported. Conclusion: The self-management program was effective for Korean women with rheumatoid arthritis in terms of increasing self-efficacy. Therefore, to increase self-management skills and self-efficacy for female rheumatoid arthritis patients, the program can be useful.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of the hypertension self-help program on knowledge, self-efficacy, self-management compliance, and physiological parameters for workers with hypertension. Methods: The subjects of study were 54 patients with hypertension, divided into 28 of experimental group and 26 of control group, working in a general work place located in K city from June to September, 2009. Experiment treatment was a 12-week self-care program given for two hours, once a week. Results: After conducting a self-help program, the experimental group showed significant increase in knowledge level, self-efficacy, self-management compliance, and physiological parameters including blood pressure, BMI, total cholesterol level, neutral fat, and LDL-cholesterol of blood lipids compared to the control group. Conclusion: This program is greatly recommended for workshops.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop a motivation-enhancing self-management program and apply to rural aged with hypertension to evaluate the applicability of the Program. Methods: The motivation-enhancing self-management program was on the evidence of Orem's self-care theory and Ford's Motivational system theory which consists of group education and tele-coaching conducted 12-week. The program evaluation was done by structured questionnaires of motivation (self-efficacy, perceived benefit, perceived barrier and emotional salience), self-care and blood pressure. There were totally 31 aged with hypertension in 2 rural areas enrolled in the program. Results: There was only perceived benefit statistically significant between the intervention and control group (t=2.05, p=.04) and self-care level was no difference between the two groups (t=0.21, p=.84) after program. But there are statistically significant differences of systolic blood pressure between the intervention and control group(t=-2.62, p=.01). Conclusion: The motivation-enhancing self-management program is necessary for the rural aged with hypertension, but it's needed modify and revise in the future study.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to develop and train caregivers in tracheostomy tube care using a self-management program to assist patients with an 'at home' tracheostomy procedure. Caregivers' self-efficacy and knowledge of tracheostomy management before and after the training was also identified. Methods: Research participants were the main caregivers for patients with tracheostomies who were affiliated with a 'Home Healthcare Center'. Training and observation were done at 'A Hospital' and 'G Hospital' both affiliated with 'K University' in Seoul. Data were collected from May 3, 2010 to January 25, 2011 and analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test with SPSS program version 12.0. Results: Significant differences were found for the pre and post evaluation of the 'self-management program' for the implementation of tracheostomy care. The development and implementation of the 'self-management program' improved the main caregivers' knowledge of tracheostomy tube management (Z=-3.599, p<.001). Conclusion: Results show that this program has identified an effective nursing intervention for promoting the caregivers' knowledge of tracheostomy care and self-efficacy. We recommend that further research should be done to test primary caregivers' maintenance of knowledge and self-efficacy in tracheostomy tube management and identify factors affecting knowledge and self-efficacy in the care of these patients.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of an integrated self-management program on self-management, glycemic control, and maternal identity in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental design was used. A total of 55 women with GDM were recruited from Cheil General Hospital, Seoul, Korea and were assigned to an experimental (n=28) or control group (n=27). The participants were 24-30 weeks pregnant women who had been diagnosed with GDM as of July 30, 2010. The program was conducted as a 1 hour small group meeting 3 out of 5 times and by telephone-counseling 2 out of 5 times. The integrated self-management program was verified by an expert panel. Results: Although there was no significant reduction in HbA1c (U= -1.17, p=.238), there were statistically significant increases in self-management (U= -3.80, p<.001) and maternal identity (U= -4.48, p<.001), and decreased 2-h postprandial glucose levels (U= -2.43, p<.015) in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that an integrated self-management program for women with GDM improves self-management, maternal identity, and glycemic control. Further studies are needed to identify the effects of an integrated self-management program on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.
Purpose: Diabetic foot ulcers are significant problems in diabetes mellitus and often result in lower extremity amputation. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a self-care management program on Korean patient's self-efficacy, self-care behavior, size of the wound, and wound related pain. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study of pre-test and post-test design in a non-equivalent control group. The intervention strategies of the self-care management program consisted of individual intervention (education, practice and demonstration), computer animation, and face-to-face counseling. There were thirty seven patients, and 20 were assigned to the experimental group while the other 17 were assigned to the control group. The experimental group was given a self-care management program. The control group received information on diabetic mellitus care by means of a leaflet. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, an independent t-test, and a Mann-Whitney test. Results: There were significant differences in self-care behavior and wound related pain. Conclusion: A Self-care program is an effective way to increase patient's self-care ability. This program is highly applicable to diabetic foot ulcer patients in various settings.
Purpose. This study was done to determine the effects of weight management program using self-efficacy in middle-aged obese women. The study also attempted to measure the effects of the program on the weight efficacy lifestyle, body composition, and depression. Method. The research design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group consisted of 21 middle-aged obese women and another 21 middle-aged obese women in the control group. The women in the experimental group participated in the weight management program for 12 weeks using self-efficacy. The weight management program using self-efficacy included education on effects of exercise for weight control, aerobic exercise program, muscle training and counseling through the telephone. Results. After 12 weeks of participation in the program, BMI (p <.0001), body fat % (p <.0001), abdominal fat (p <.0001), in the experimental group were significantly decreased compared to the control group. Weight self-efficacy lifestyle (p <.0001) and depression (p =.006) in the experimental group were significantly improved after the program compared to the control group. According to these findings, weight management program self-efficacy for middle-aged obese women could increase weight efficacy lifestyle, and decrease depression, BMI, body fat, and abdominal fat. Conclusion. The result also suggested that the increasing weight efficacy and lifestyle help the obese women to perform and continue exercise. This program could be used in the community such as public health center for weight care and mental health promotion of middle-aged obese women.
