Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of spirituality and job satisfaction on the compassion competence of hospice nurses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 118 hospice nurses from 16 hospitals in Daejeon, Chungcheong Province, and Jeolla Province. A self-administered survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire including the Spirituality Scale, Index of Work Satisfaction, the Compassion Competence Scale for Nurses, and general socio-demographic information. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis using SPSS for Windows version 26.0. Results: Compassion competence was correlated with spirituality (r=0.66, P<0.001) and job satisfaction (r=0.52, P<0.001), and spirituality was correlated with job satisfaction (r=0.44, P<0.001). Spirituality (β=0.513, P<0.001) and job satisfaction (β=0.273, P<0.001) were significant factors affecting the compassion competence of hospice nurses, after adjusting for the sociodemographic and work-related covariates. The step-by-step results from hierarchical linear regression analysis also indicated that spirituality had a stronger impact than job satisfaction on compassion competence. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate the importance of spirituality, which plays a role in guiding the compassion competence of hospice nurses. It is necessary to support the spirituality and job satisfaction of hospice nurses, which could facilitate their compassion competence and thereby contribute to improving the quality of hospice and palliative care.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a program to help emergency nurses overcome compassion fatigue, and to analyze the effects of the program. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. There were 14 participants in the experimental group and 18 subjects in the control group. The program was comprised of five, weekly 80-minute sessions including understanding and assessment of compassion fatigue, enhancing positive affect, balancing work-life, planning self care, training in relaxation techniques and cognitive restructuring, and getting social support. Research variables were ego-resiliency, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue of the ProQOL 5, and salivary cortisol. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results: The first hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for ego resiliency between the experimental group and the control group". was not supported. The second hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion satisfaction between the experimental group and the control group" was supported (t=2.15, p=.046). The third hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion fatigue between the experimental group and the control group" was not supported. Conclusion: The first program for emergency nurses to overcome compassion fatigue in Korea was effective in increasing emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction and decreasing salivary cortisol level in the experimental group. Therefore, this program for overcoming compassion fatigue is useful to increase emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction. However replication studies of short-term intensive program reflecting emergency nurses' opinion are needed.
This study aims to investigate the differences in burnout, emotional labor strategies, affect intensity, and emotional clarity based on combinations of level of mindfulness and compassion. To achieve this, a total of 137 mental health professionals participated in this study, and they were classified into four groups based on their level of mindfulness and compassion using cluster analysis. Then, the differences among the groups were compared. The results of the multivariate analysis of covariance(MANCOVA) or multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) controlling for career experience, showed that the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion had the highest levels of positive affect intensity, emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression, while having the lowest levels of negative affect intensity, surface acting, and burnout. In comparison to the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion, the group with high or low level of either mindfulness or compassion had both positive and negative affect intensity at higher or lower levels. Additionally, they showed lower emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression. Conversely, they showed higher levels of surface acting and burnout. The group with low levels of both mindfulness and compassion experienced low levels of positive affect intensity and high levels of negative affect intensity. They also had the lowest levels of emotional clarity for self and others and genuine expression. In addition, they showed that the highest levels of surface acting, and burnout. Based on the results, the study discussed the balanced development of mindfulness and compassion to prevent burnout of professionals in the human service field, including mental health professionals. The implications and limitations of this study were further analyzed in the discussion section, including the direction for future research.

The purpose of this study was to examine how the level of self-compassion of correctional workers influenced depression and the simple and double mediating effects of job stress and job autonomy. Although correctional officers experience high levels of stress and depression, there are limited strategies to protect their job performance. The total of 210 correctional workers in S. Korea were included in the final analysis using SPSS PROCESS Macro model 6. For the analysis, Korean Self-Compassion Scale (K-SCS), Korean occupational stress scale (KOSS), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESDS) were used. The results of the study were as follows. First, the correlation analysis showed statistically significant relationships between the variables(p<.01). Second, the simple mediating effect of job autonomy was found in the relationship between the self-compassion and depression as well as the double mediating effect of job stress and job autonomy. The influences of low level of self-compassion on mental health (depression) could be modified by improving the level of work related empowerment (job autonomy) as a protective factor. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of compassion competence and organizational commitment on customer orientation in hospital nurses. Methods: The participant of this study was 223 nurses who have worked at a tertiary hospital in Chungcheong Province for at least one year. The general characteristics, compassion competence, organizational commitment, and customer orientation of the participants were collected, using self-reported questionnaires, from June 15 to June 29, 2018. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA ($Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test), Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using an SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: Customer orientation was significantly associated with organizational commitment (r=.51, p<.001), and compassion competence (r=.74, p<.001). Compassion competence (${\beta}=.62$, p<.001), organizational commitment (${\beta}=.17$, p=.004), and marital status (${\beta}=.11$, p=.034) were identified as the predictors of customer orientation. These variables explained 59.1% of the variance in customer orientation. Conclusion: This study confirmed that compassion competence and organizational commitment may have an impact on customer orientation in hospital Nurses. Therefore, to improve customer orientation in hospital nurses, it is necessary to develop interventions and education programs considering these factors.
Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to explore nursing workplace spirituality, end-of-life care stress, and resilience as factors influencing compassion fatigue among nurses working in hospice and palliative care units. Methods: Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire completed by 146 nurses at 14 hospice and palliative care institutions across South Korea who had worked in a hospice and palliative care institution for at least 6 months and had experience providing end-of-life care. Data were collected from February 25, 2019 to April 12, 2019, and analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 18.0. As appropriate, descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression were used. Results: The survey results showed that factors influencing compassion fatigue were resilience, subjective health status, current satisfaction with the hospice ward, and end-of-life care stress. Higher levels of resilience, a subjective health status of "healthy", high levels of current satisfaction with the hospice ward, and lower levels of end-of-life care stress were associated with lower levels of compassion fatigue, explaining 42.9% of the total variance. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that resilience is an important factor mitigating compassion fatigue among nurses at hospice and palliative care institutions. Therefore, intervention programs should be developed to reduce compassion fatigue.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, spirituality and quality of life in nursing students with clinical practice. Participants were 172 fourth-year nursing students who were recruited from 3 universities. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires from November 7 to December 11 in 2020. The results show that burnout was negatively correlated with quality of life and compassion satisfaction was positively correlated with quality of life. In addition, spirituality was negatively correlated with burnout and was positively correlated with compassion satisfaction. In order to improve the quality of life of nursing students, it is necessary to develop and apply a spirituality promotion strategy that can control compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction along with the enhancement of compassion competency in the undergraduate course
Altruistic virtuous caring, possibly originated from religion and/or spirituality, is indispensable for holistic health through channeling vital energy with diet, exercise and meditation. This is a participant-observed medical anthropological research of a first generation Korean elderly immigrant health professional woman living in a four generational family. She had hypertension and was concerned about possible attack of stroke. Multi-religious, spiritual, and cosmological vital energy based on holistic Nature-oriented health beliefs and practices influenced by psychosocial, cultural and economic background, education, self- discipline and self-cultivation of individual, and group or family may create health. Self-care beliefs based on confidence in self-control of one's life style for oneself and others influence individual and group health practice. The holistic alternative health beliefs and practices were proved to be efficacious and beneficial by her self-evaluation, evaluation of significant others, biomedical professionals, and laboratory tests. That may have potential application for global health.
